LA COSTA CANYON HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

LCC played Vista today in the final game of the 2013 Avocado West League season.  The game was played on the road and Vista threw their ace - Seeberger.  LCC jmuped ahead with a run in the top of the 2nd when Davern hit a HOMERUN over the right field fence.  Vista tied it up in 3rd when they scored a run.  The Mav's threatened in the 4th but left 2 runners on base.  Vista took the lead in the 5th after loading the bases with a couple of hits and 2 walks.  LCC could not answer with runs in the 6th or 7th.  The final score was Vista 2, LCC 1.

Sachrison started for the Mav's.  He pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up one earned run.  Johnson entered in the 3rd and took the loss when Vista scored in the 5th.

LCC ends the league season with an Avocado West record of 11-4.  The Mav's will now move in to the Open Division of CIF Playoffs with a game at home on Wednesday May 22nd.  The opponent is TBD.

Playing on the road at Carlsbad and not wanting to lose momentum heading in to CIF Playoffs, the Mavericks came to this game intent on stealing a game from the team in the ugly purple uniforms.

Neither team could score in the first, but LCC jumped on the board in the top of the 2nd when Miller got things rolling with a 2-out single.  Potter followed with a line drive triple down the 1st base line that scored Miller.  Schenk then followed with an RBI-single to make the score 2-0.  Carlsbad managed to score a run in the 3rd and then they added 2 more in the 4th to take the lead. 

La Costa added a run in the 6th when Balderas jacked a BOMB over the left field fence to tie the game.   The game got serious at this point as both teams increased their chanting and the crowd in the stands barked at each other.  Potter got on first to leadoff the 7th inning.  Schenk followed with a perfect sacrifice bunt and Moniak hit him in with a line drive single to the outfield to put the Mav's up by one run.

Entering the bottom of the 7th, Coach Machado brought in closer Balderas for the save opportunity.  The first Carlsbad hitter doubled and the 2nd batter singled to put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no one out.  The pressure was on, but Balderas was up to the task striking out the next hitter, getting a flyball (no one knows why the runner at 3rd didn't tag up??), and last but not least one final strikeout to win the game.  Final score LCC 4, Carlsbad 3.

Kyle Sachrison started for the Mavericks and pitched 6 complete innings giving up just 1 earned run, and striking out 6.  Balderas closed the game and got the save.

Next up is the last and final league game of the season against Vista on Wednesday.

Playing a must-win game against rival Carlsbad, LCC was forced to go to ACE Carter Johnson on short rest when Sachrison spent the day dealing with a stomach flu.  Johnson came out dealing strike-out after strike-out (7 in the first three innings).  With LCC scoring 2 runs and taking a 2-0 lead it looked like this game was in the bag.  We were headed for a rubber game against Cbad on Friday.  The fat lady was starting to sing............. But then Johnson's lack of full rest began to show some signs that he might not make it thru the whole game and cracks began to appear.  Carlsbad put up one huge inning, scoring 6 runs to take a 6-0 lead.  LCC added another run in the 5th but Carlsbad replied with one of their own to make the final score Carlsbad 8, LCC 3.

It was a tough loss - LCC will now re-gather and focus on their year long goal of defending the CIF Championship Title.  Next up are two final league games - at Carlsbad on Friday, then at Vista next Wednesday.  Go Mavericks.
