Mavs Open Lions with Victory

The La Costa Canyon Mavericks opened division play in the classic division of the Lions Tournament with a victory over Silverado (NV). The 7-3 victory was highlighed by both the defense and offense. On the mound Wes Schiller pitched a complete game four hitter in earning his third victory on the year. In doing so Wes took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a leadoff hit followed by a home run. The home run ended a streak of 14 scoreless innings by the Mavericks. At the plate the Mavericks banged out 13 hits led by Scott Clement (3-3), and Nick Burke (2-3). The win moves the Mavericks record to 8-3 on the season and 1-0 in pool play. The tournament continues tomorrow at La Costa Canyon against Santana High School at 12:00.

Mavs Cruise by Santana

Again the Mavericks were led by strong defense and steller pitching as they cruised to a 13-4 victory over visiting Santana. Jimmy Voaklander earned his first victory of his varsity career going 4 innings allowing four earned runs. In doing so Jimmy gave up 6 hits, striking out 4. Garrett VanLeeuwen finished the game going three strong innings in relief. The Mavericks offensively banged out `8 hits in route to a five run first and six run third. They were led by a host of Mavericks: Nick Burke (3-4, 2 R, RBI), Kevin Patterson (2-3, 2R, 3 RBI), Chris Smith (2-2, R, 2RBI), and Travis Jones (2-2, 2RBI, Sac). Those two big innings were all the Mavericks would need as they moved to 2-0 in pool play, and 9-3 overall. The Mavericks finish pool play tomorrow against Rancho Bernardo at LCC 3:00. The winner will play at San Diego Mesa Junior College tomorrow at 10:00.
Rancho Bernardo jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then held off Fallbrook's 7th inning rally to beat the Warriors 7-5 and win the North County Tournament Championship. Rancho Bernardo is now 11-1 and Fallbrook falls to 11-2, having lost two tournament championship games. WP Lopez (RB); LP Bardeen (F); HR's Lopez (RB) 5th none on; Wideman (F) 7th one on; and Bardeen (F) 7th none on.

Konoske No Hits Poway

Doug Konoske showed his dominance yesterday pitching a no hitter in a 17-0 defeat of Poway. It was the third no hitter of all time at La Costa Canyon. In doing so Doug faced 23 batters, striking out 12, and walking 2. It was a complete team effort with multiple nice plays made all over the field. Offensively the Mavericks were led by Nick Burke who went 3-4. The Mavericks finish the North County Tournament with a 3-2 record, and move their record to 7-3 on the season. They will compete in the Lions Tournament starting Monday 4/5 at El Capitan High School 10:00.image

Mavericks Lose to Falcons

In game four of the North County Tournament the Mavericks lost 6-0 to the Torrey Pines Falcons. The Falcons were led by Brian Murphy who pitched a complete game 5 hitter. The Mavericks were unable to get anything going on offense as Murphy dominated. Brett St. Amor was the lone bright spot for the Mavericks collecting two hits. The loss moves the Mavericks to 2-2 in the tournament and 6-3 overall. The Mavericks finish round robin play on Wednesday against Poway at LCC.
