MAVERICKS BEAT TORREY PINES - AGAIN

On Tuesday June 1st, La Costa Canyon defeated district rival Torrey Pines 4-1 to earn a trip to the CIF Championship Game and a chance to defend their CIF Title against top ranked Fallbrook. Mike Murphy pitched a very good game for the Falcons in allowing only 4 runs while striking out 7. Doug Konoske pitched an excellent game for the Mavericks, as after a first inning home run, Doug allowed only one infield single while striking out 10 batters and walking none. The Mavericks tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning as Michael Kinney got an infield single on a high pop up that fell in untouched, stole 2nd base, advanced to 3rd on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch as he slid under the tag. In the bottom of the 5th inning the Mavericks took the lead as Kyle Musella and Jimmy Pierce both singled; Muscella scored from 3rd on a ground ball to short when the throw home was high. Pierce scored from 2nd on a hit and run single by Kevin Patterson. In the top of the 6th the Falcons threatened on an infield single and a batter hit by pitch but could not score. In the bottom of the 6th the Mavericks got an insurance run on a rbi single by Brian Ernst to score Kinney. Records: La Costa Canyon 24-9; Torrey Pines 19-5 The Falcons had an excellent run to the semi-final game in beating Sweetwater and beating Montgomery twice, but they were eliminated on their second loss to La Costa Canyon. The La Costa Canyon Mavericks (23-9) will host a CIF Semi-Final Game this Tuesday, June 1st at 4:00 P.M. against Torrey Pines (19-14). The Mavericks have the edge as Torrey Pines will have to win on Tuesday to force a second semi-final game against the Mavericks on Thursday. The Falcons beat the number one seed Montgomery for the seond time in 4 days. If Montgomery had won on Saturday the Mavericks would have traveled to Montgomery for the Tuesday Semi-Final match up. In the other elination game Rancho Bernardo beat Rancho Buena Vista 8-6 in 8 innings to earn a rematch against Fallbrook at Fallbrook High School on Tuesday June 1st at 3:30 P.M. Saturday Elimination Games: Rancho Bernardo (28-6) over Rancho Buena Vista (19-14) by a score of 8-6. Torrey Pines (19-14) over Montgomery (26-7) for the second time 5-3. Division II Scores: Ramona (20-14) over Grossmont (20-12) by a score of 6-5; Mt Carmel (20-15) over Patrick Henry (20-10) by a score of 6-0.

MAVERICKS BEAT TORREY PINES 5 - 4

La Costa Canyon beat district rival Torrey Pines 5-4 to advance to next Tuesday's Semi-Final contest against an opponent and site to be announced after Saturday's Loser's Bracket Elimination game. Wes Schiller pitched a gutsy 7 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, while striking out 7 and walking only 1. Wes struck out the side in the top of the first inning and struck out the last batter in the 7th inning for the 3rd and final out with the tying run left at second base. The La Costa Canyon offense was led by Nick Burke with two singles, and a sacrafice fly by Scott Clement, but it was the bench that came through in the bottom of the 5th inning to complete the game winning rally with 2 outs. Pinch hitter Bryan Ernst singled to right field to score Konoske to make it 3-4, and after a walk to Jimmy Pierce, pinch hitter Michael Kenny walked to load the bases and then pinch hitter Cole Ducey hit a hard ground ball that was muffed by the Torrey Pines second basemen to allow the tying and go ahead runs to score. MAVERICKS TO HOST TORREY PINES IN ROUND TWO

La Costa Canyon (22-9)will play host to district rival Torrey Pines(18-13) on Friday June 28th at 4:00pm in the Second Round of the Winners Bracket of the CIF Division I Playoffs. La Costa Canyon beat Granite Hills 6-2 while Torrey Pines upset number one seeded Montgomery 2-0. In the other Winners Bracket Quarterfinal match up, Rancho Bernardo a 7-6 winner over Eastlake, will travel to Fallbrook, which edged Rancho Buena Vista 3-2. In the Losers Bracket on Friday Eastlake will host RBV, and Granite Hills will travel to Montgomery. The two Saturday Losers Bracket Elimination Games have been moved from Carlsbad High to Rancho Bernardo High.

MAVERICKS POUND GRANITE HILLS 6 - 2

On Wednesday at La Costa Canyon High School the Mavericks (22-9)pounded out 11 hits in a 6-2 win over Granite Hills (20-9-2). The Mavericks struck early on a first inning triple by Nick Burke and a double by Scott Clement. The Mavericks 3-0 lead was in jepordy when Granite Hills loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 5th inning but Maverick ace Doug Konoske was able to work his way out of the jam while yielding only 2 runs. Konoske appeared to get stronger in the the last two innings, setting down six batters in a row and notching his 13th strike out. Scott Clement's home run in the 6th inning with one runner on base provided the final two insurance runs. Travis Jones went 3 for 3, scored 2 runs and had 1 rbi. Nick Burke ended up with a triple, a double, two singles, 2 runs scored, 2 runs batted in and 2 stolen bases.
