2004 MAVERICKS WIN SECOND CIF CHAMPIONSHIP

Posted by Ruth Stoffel at Jun 5, 2004 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Mavericks rallied in the top of the eighth inning on Nick Burke's three run home run to beat Fallbrook 7-4. In 2003 Nick contributed the "catch", a diving all out stretch to catch a line drive against Eastlake in a 2-1 semi-final win. In 2004 it was his bat and his arm in the Championship game as he went 3 for 4, with two runs scored, three runs batted in and threw out a runner at home from his center field position. Wes Schiller started for the Mavericks and struggled in the first two innings giving up four earned runs, before settling in to hold the line for the next three innings. Wes finished with 5 innings, yielding 10 hits, striking out 4, walking 4 and leaving the game whith his team in a 4-4 tie and in a great position to win. In the top of the 3rd inning the Mavericks scored one run on three consecutive two out singles with Scott Clement knocking in Nick Burke. In the top of the 4th inning the Mavericks tied the game at 4 all with a throwing error that allowed Jimmy Pierce to score and then rbi singles by Travis Jones and Kevin Patterson to tie the game. After having pitched 7 innings on Tuesday, Doug Konoske entered the game in relief in the bottom of the 6th inning. Doug allowed no runs, walked 1 and struck out 5 in shutting out the Warriors over the last three innings. Burke's three run home run with one out in the the top of the eighth inning also scored Brian Ernst and Kyle Musella. It was timely as Konoske had only one inning of eligibility left and he shut out the Warriors in the bottom half of the eighth to preserve the second consecutive extra inning CIF Championship win for the Mavericks. Fallbrook pounded out 11 hits and left 12 runners on base but the final power ranking in Home Runs was: La Costa Canyon 1 Fallbrook 0. Other 2004 CIF Division Championships: Div II El Capitan 8 Vahalla 2 Div III Mission Bay 13 St Augustine 4 Div IV Francis Parker 4 Santa Fe Christian 0 Recent Past CIF Division I Championship Games: 2004 La Costa Canyon 7, Fallbrook 3 (8 innings); 2003 La Costa Canyon 5, Rancho Bernardo 4 (8 inn.); 2002 Rancho Buena Vista 6, Rancho Bernardo 0; 2001 Rancho Bernardo 6, Poway 2; 2000 Rancho Bernardo 1, Vista 0; 1999 Rancho Bernardo 8, Helix 0; 1998 Granite Hills 6, Grossmont 2; 1997 Grossmont 5, La Costa Canyon 3 image
La Costa Canyon's Baseball program has returned to the San Diego Section Division I CIF Championship game for the third time in it's eight years of existence against Avocado League Champion Fallbrook. The Warriors have reached the CIF Baseball finals for the first time in their 111 years of playing Varsity Baseball. The Avocado League Champion Warriors (15-0;30-4) swept Palomar League Champion Rancho Bernardo twice in the CIF Playoffs to reach the Championship game. La Costa Canyon (10-5;24-9)beat Granite Hills and then defeated district rival Torrey Pines in two games to earn the right to defend their CIF Division I Championship. Fallbrook defeated La Costa Canyon three times during the regular season. On April 16th at La Costa Canyon the Warriors turned two "triple" plays to preserve a 1-1 tie through 5 innings and then hit home runs in the 6th and 7th inning off Maverick ace Doug Konoske for a 4-1 win. On April 28th with Wes Schiller pitching the Mavericks took a 5-0 lead at Fallbrook but the Warriors tied it at 5-5 after 5 innings and a 6th inning home run, their third of the game, won it for the Warriors 6-5. On May 12th at Fallbrook the Warriors hit two more home runs to take a lead and the Mavericks 3 run rally in the top of the 7th inning fell short as the Warriors won 7-6. Fallbrook at 30-4 has won 19 consecutive games but the large expanse of Tony Gwynn Stadium at San Diego State will help neutralize Fallbrook's power advantage. Fallbrook has hit 62 home runs, the Fourth highest in San Diego CIF Section history. The Mavericks started off the year with a string of bad luck injuries but they have rebounded with a great team effort led by Seniors Doug Konoske, Nick Burke and Scott Clement to earn the return trip to the stadium.
