The Oceanside Pirates beat up on the Mavericks in the opening game of the North County Tournament. From the first inning the Pirates came out swinging scoring 4 int he first, 2 in the second, and 2 more in the sixth to win 8-0. Offensively the Mavericks were unable to get any momentum as the Pirate pitcher threw a one hit shutout. The lone Maverick hit was collected by Chris Brookey. The Mavericks will play Friday Aginst RBV at home in the second game of the North County Tournament.
With two outs in the eighth inning and a man on second and third Brian Martutartus hit a chopper up the middle to win the game for the Mavericks 4-3. Michael Cruz started for the Mavericks and went five and a third innings with no decision. Tyler Korn entered in the sixth with one out and men on second and third in a tie game. He struck and the first hitter and got the next hitter to ground out to shortstop. He then pitched the final two innings not giving up a run. Korn earned his first varsity victory. The Mavericks were led offensively by Brian Martutartus (2-3, run, 2 RBI's). With the victory the Mavericks move their record to 3-0 on the season. The Mavericks play Riveside Poly on Thursday at 3:15.
Chris Brookey pitched a complete game shutout to secure the victory for the Mavericks. In doing so Chris struck out five, walked two, and gave up four hits. The Mavericks struggled offensively until late. In the sixth, Casey Candelaria singled to score Jimmy Pierce, breaking a 0-0 tie. The seventh provided the most offense as the Mavs pounded out 5 hits and scored 5 runs. Michael Cruz and Jimmy Pierce each had clutch two out hits to score two runs each. The win moves the Mavs record to 2-0 on the season. The Mavericks continue tournament play Saturday at 10:30 at LCC.
Behind the strong pitching effort by Tyler Wells the Mavericks were able to defeat the Carlsbad Lancers 4-2. Wells pitched sixth innings striking out 9, and giving up one earned run. Sophomore Tyler Korn pitched the seventh to earn his first save of the year. Offensively the Mavericks were led by Cole Ducey and Grant Allgire. Both players had similar days with a 2B, run, and an RBI. The Mavericks continue play in the Falcon-Pirate Thursday at Orange Glen.
