LA COSTA CANYON HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

The Mavs started their post-season play with a hard fought 7-6 win over the RBV Longhorns. Brian Martutartus (4 RBIs) led the offense with his first varsity home run - a grand slam in the 2nd inning allowing the Mavs to jump out to a 4-0 lead. The Longhorns battled back in the 3rd inning scoring 2 runs, but the Mavs answered by scoring 3 runs in the 4th inning on Jimmy Pierce (2 RBIs) and Grant Allgire (1 RBI) hits. RBV rallied late adding 2 runs in the 4th and 2 runs in the 6th, but the Mavericks closed out the game in the bottom of the 7th with a game saving defensive play by Allgire. Starting pitcher Sean Soto allowed 3 runs on 3 hits (3 Ks and 3BBs) in 3 innings of work. Reliever Michael Cruz is credited with the win allowing 3 runs on 5 hits (3 Ks, 2 BBs). Mavs play #1 seed at Torrey Pines on Wednesday at 3:30.

The Mavericks finished the season with a 15-13 record earning a ninth seed in the CIF Playoffs. This is the Mavericks tenth straight appearance in the playoffs. On Tuesday the Mavericks will play a play in game against Rancho Buena Vista. The game will begin at 3:30. The winner of the game will play on Wednesday at #1 seed Torrey Pines.

With a pre-game ceremony to honor Maverick graduating seniors and their parents, the regular season ended with a home loss to the Broncos. Senior starting pitcher Tyler Wells gave up 5 runs on 7 hits, 2Ks over 4 1/3 innings of work. Chris Brookey pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief of Wells with no runs on 1 hit (1 K, 0 BB) through the 6th . Senior Michael Snider took the mound in the 7th inning allowing 4 runs on 4 hits (2 Ks, 0 BB). Offensively Brian Martutartus, Rusty Leedy and Brookey collected the only Maverick hits. The Mavericks will now await the CIF Division 1 Playoff Bracket which will be posted at www.cifsds.org/baseball.asp

The Mavs pitching and hitting came together for the 6-3 win over Mt. Carmel. Starting pitcher Sean Soto had a solid performance giving up three hits, one run and striking out three. Michael Cruz pitched in relief allowing no earned runs, four hits and striking out six. The Mavs bats came alive putting together nine hits. The offense was led by Graham Nancarrow (2-2, 3RBIs) and Michael Oman (2B, 2 RBIs). The final regular season game is at home on Wednesday, 3:30 against Rancho Bernardo.
