All Palomar League Honors

Tyler Wells was named to the 2006 First Team All Palomar League Team. The other Mavericks receiving Honorable Mention for All Palomar League Honors were Grant Allgire, Chris Brookey and Michael Cruz.

PAUL OSEGUERA (2002) Was back as the most consistent relief pitcher for UCLA (33-25). In 2006 Paul earned Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors with a team leading 29 appearances, a 1.66 ERA, with a record of 3 wins, 1 loss and 2 saves. He has pitched 48.2 innings, allowing 9 earned runs, on 41 hits, while striking out 47 against only 9 walks. On June 4th in the NCAA tournament against Missouri, Paul pitched 1.1 innings, allowing 1 inherited runner to score on one hit, and struck out 1. On May 16th Paul pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, with only 4 hits, 6 strike outs, and 1 walk to get his 3rd win of the year in a 8-4 victory over UC Irvine. In the two recent three game series with USC and Stanford, UCLA won 2 out of 3 in each one, and Paul pitched in two games of each series. In two appearances against the University of Miami, Paul pitched two and one-third innings, allowing 1 hit, no earned runs, walked none and struck out three. On Feb. 10th Paul entered the game in the 8th inning with the bases loaded and one out, with Miami leading 2-1. Paul gave up a sacrafice fly to left and got a ground ball to 2nd for the 3rd out. In the 9th inning Paul struck out the side. On Feb 28th Paul entered the game in the 8th inning with UCLA holding a 6-3 lead over Long Beach State. With one out and one runner on, Paul got a third to second to first double play. On Mar. 3rd at North Carolina State Paul entered in the 7th inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Paul struck out the batter to end the 7th and then over the 8th and 9th innings Paul allowed one hit and struck out three more to earn his first save. On Mar. 4th Paul entered the game in the bottom of the 9th inning with the Bruins leading by one, with one out and one runner on. Paul struck out two batters to end the game and earn his second save. From Mar 10th to the 12th, Paul pitched in all three games against 19th ranked Ole Miss, yielding his first earned run of the year in a 9-2 win, and getting 2 of the 3 outs in the 9th inning of the 6-4 win before yielding to a right handed pitcher who got the 3rd out. On Mar. 19th against San Diego State Paul pitched the 8th & 9th innings of a 9-1 win, giving up no runs on 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out three. On April 1st Paul got his first win against the University of Washington and on April 9th he got his second win against Washington State. CASEY STERK (2002) A senior at Wake Forest (33-22)Casey is in the mix in playing right and left field, haveing started 21 of the 35 games he has appeared in. On Feb 21st Casey played five innings, going 1 for 2 in a 4-3 win over Charlotte. On Mar 19th Casey started in left field in a 8-6 win over Baoston College Casey went 1-1, 1 h, 1 rbi and 3 BB. On April 16th Casey started in left field against Duke and went 3 for 5, with 3 runs scored and 1 run batted in. Casey finished the 2006 regular season with a .250 batting average, a .389 OBP, he has 20 hits, 3 doubles, 14 BB, 6 HbP, 17 R, 5 rbi's and only 7 SO in 80 at bats, and stole 10 of 13 attempted steals; with 37 put outs and 1 assist in the outfield. JACKSON CHAPELONE (2002) Jackson is making a come back at San Diego City Community College (20-15. In 18 appearances, Jackson has 29 AB, 5 R, 9 H, 2 rbi and a .310 Avg. PETER BETHEA (2003) Peter is on the roster as a catcher with St Mary's University of California. The Gaels (13-13) came to San Diego for a 3 game series with USD. JOEY BURKE (2003) Joey transfered from Palomar to Cal State Chico, (46-21, 20-13), which won the 2006 CCCA Conference Tournament, and on May 21st won the 2nd game of a double header with Cal State LA to win the Western Regional Championship and advance to the Division II College World Series in Montgomery Alabama for the 7th time in the last 10 years. Chico swept through the World Series brackets to reach the Championship game undefeated where they lost a late lead and then the game, 2-3 in extra innings to the No. 1 ranked University of Tampa(54-6). Joey started 8 of the first 9 games of the year for Chico, playing in the outfield and leading off. Joey was hitting .476, with 10 hits in 21 at bats, scoring 10 runs, 3 rbi's, and a .600 on base percentage with 6 walks when at a game in Las Vegas Joey fouled a pitch off his foot and then had to leave the game, and missed several weeks. He started two games over the Mar. 18th weekend and on Sat. went 2 for 2, with 1 BB and 2 runs scored. Joey recently came back to San Diego to play UCSD and although Chico lost 3 of 4 and fell a game behind in the standings Joey started all 4 games and collected a couple of hits and 2 rbi's. Joey finished the year having started 34 of the 39 games he has appeared in, batting .275, with an on base percentage of .391, with 120 AB, 33 H, 23 R, 2 2b, 10 rbi's, 18 BB, 9 SO, 3 HbP, 5 for 8 in SB/ATT, and 54 Put Outs and 2 assists. ANDREW NACARIO (2003) A junior at Dartmouth (20-19, 13-7), Andrew was back again this year starting in left field and batting near the top of the order. In their first two games (after a late start due to winter weather), Andrew batted .333, with 2 H, 1 2b, 1 R, and 1 RBI in 6 At bats. Coming out to rainy So. Cal. against Peperdine, Andrew helped his team beat Peperdine 3-2, but popped out to short against former team mate Doug Konoske. In a recent 13-8 win over Harvard Andrew got 1 hit, 1 BB, scored 2 runs and had 1 rbi. Andrew started 33 games, with a .282 Avg, 124 AB, 22 R, 35 H, 3 2b, 18 rbi's and 5 BB, 10 HbP, 11 SO, .358 OBP, 1 SB, 65 PO and 3 Assists. NICK BURKE (2004) Nick transfered to Palomar Community College (30-14)which entered the State Playoffs as the No. 6 Seed hosting Rio Hondo. On Feb. 21st Nick went 3 for 4 with 2 rbi's and 1 stolen base. In 29 games he is hitting .365 with 63 at bats, 23 hits, 9 runs, 12 rbi's, 5 2b, 1 3b, 5 BB, 14 SO, 3 HbP, 3 SB, and a .437 OB%. SCOTT CLEMENT (2004) Scott transferred from Palomar to the University of California at San Diego (35-24)which got off to a great start. Scott started 47 games at first base or designated hitter. In 182 at bats, Scott batted .341 with 15 Home Runs, 2 Triples, 9 Doubles, 52 runs batted in, 38 runs scored, 10 walks, 28 SO, 5 HbP, a .389 OB%m a ,659 Slg%, and 101 Put outs. On Feb. 18th Scott went 3 for 5, with 1 HR, 1 run scored and 4 rbi's. On Mar. 27th in a double header sweep of Chico, Scott went 6 for 8, with 3 Home Runs, 2 Doubles and 7 rbi's and he was named the CCAA League Player of the Week. MIKE KENNEY (2004) Mike appeared in two games as a relief pitcher for Loyola Marymount. DOUG KONOSKE (2004) Doug was limited by arm problems to two appearances. He made his first appearance of the year for Pepperdine University (19-11), pitching the 7th & 8th innings of a 6-2 win over Dartmouth, striking out two and allowing only a bunt single and a walk before getting former team mate Andrew Nacario to pop up to short for the third out. In his 2nd outing against Northwestern, Doug pitched the 8th and 9th innings, giving up one ER on two hits and one Strike out. App. 2, ERA 2.25, Inn 4.0, ER 1, H 3, BB 2, SO 3. KEVIN PATTERSON 92004) Kevin has transferred to Grossmont Community College which made it to the second round of the State Playoffs(29-16). In 11 games Kevin has 31 at bats, 4 R, 9 H, 3 2bs, 2 3b, 1 HR, 9 rbi's, 2 BB, 10 SO, a .290 batting avg. and a .613 slugging percentage. RUSS LOWELL (2005) Russ is on the roster at Long Beach State and red shirted. BRETT StAMOUR (2005) Brett is at San Diego Mesa Community College(14-24-1). In 29 games he had 84 at bats, scored 11 runs, 17 hits, 3 BB, 3 HbP, 8 SB, 15 rbi's and a .202 avg. NICK SIGNAIGO (2005) Nick is at San Diego City College (20-15). In 17 Games he had 31 at bats, 7 runs, 8 hits, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 4 BB, 7 SO, 1 HbP and .258 avg.

Poway Wins Division I CIF Championship

Poway used the momentum of its narrow 5-4 come from behind extra inning win over the Mavericks to help them sweep through the rest of the playoffs as they then beat Vista 2-0, and Torrey Pines twice by a score of 7-2 and 4-3, and then trounced Fallbrook in the Championship game at Tony Gwynn Stadium 6-2.

Mavericks Finish Season at Poway

The Mavericks lost to the Titans 5-4 in the second round of CIF Playoffs to conclude the season. Grant Allgire’s solo homerun in the 1st gave the Mavs an early 1-0 lead. They added 3 more runs in the 3rd when Brian Martutartus singled and Jimmy Pierce doubled; Martutartus scored on a wild pitch and Pierce advanced to 3rd base. Cole Ducey laid a sacrifice bunt down to score Pierce. Rusty Leedy followed with a single, stole second, and scored on a hit by Tyler Wells. The Titans battled back scoring 3 runs in the 3rd, tying on an unearned run in the 5th and scoring the winning run in the 8th. Chris Brookey started on the mound allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits (2 Ks, 2 BBs) in 4 1/3 innings. Tyler Korn pitched in relief allowing 1 earned run in the 8th inning. The Mavericks finish the season 16-15.

Torrey 4, LCC 0

The Mavs lost to #1 seed Torrey Pines 4-0 in the first round CIF playoff game. The Mavs were held to 4 hits with no runs scored. Brian Martutartus led the Mavs offensively going (2-3 with a 2B). Tyler Wells pitched 4 shutout innings in 5 1/3 innings of work. The Mavs plays the Titans at Poway on Friday.
