Nats Blank Menasha in Opener

Posted by Steve Elliott at May 19, 2005 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Here's Johnny.

The newest National made an immediate impact in his team debut.  Displaying a presence and command not seen Kuhnke toed the rubber, Johnny Arnold overwhelmed the Menasha Macs on Friday night in Menasha.  In a briskly played came, the Nats prevailed 4-0.

Arnold dominated the game from the hill in a 9 inning shutout.  He struck out 14, while walking only two and never allowed the Macs to put together a serious threat.

It was just the type of performance the Nationals needed and expected on night when the offense struggled to get going.  An RBI double by Jared Stengal and two run double by newly acquired first baseman, Adam Kaufman, were nearly all of the offense that the team could muster.

A little cold weather certainly didn't scare the Old Timers last Saturday at Zirkel Field.  Johnny Arnold?  That's a different matter.  Leading start to finish, youth prevailed 6-1.

In an aggressive tactical effort, the Young Bucks trotted the veteran lefthander to the mound to start the annual Old Timer's game.  The result was predictable, if not painful.  Mixing a heavy fastball and curve, Arnold dominated the AARP group's slow bats, striking out seven in three innings of work.  The lone highlight was a line single to right field by Bill Beres.  Beres went on to finish with an Old Timer game record three hits on the day.

The young bucks were led by Alex Franson, James Herkowski, Brian Gibson, and Jim Dettman, each contributing two knocks.

Strap it on gentlemen (and Nationals.)  The annual grudge match is just around the corner.

Back by popular demand is the match for the ages.  The dusty and grizzled veterans from days of yore raise the guantlet against the frisky puppies of the modern era.

Clear  May 7 on your calendars.  West Allis will shut down; the mayor has officially declared it a "Nationals Weekend."  Hide the women and children.  We're getting the band back together for another run at infamy.
