Weathering the mid-season lull is challenging every year.  It is especially challenging when work commitments, family commitments, and illness reduce an otherwise strong unit to a mere skeleton.

Facing a well prepared and deep Kiwanis squad, the Nationals fielded a pitcher-riddled lineup that failed to rise to the challenge.

The Nationals jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Jesse Hart's fourth homer of the year.  Jared Stengal's homer in the fourth pushed that lead to 2-0, but the Kiwanis came back to tie the game at two in the fifth.  Another tally in the sixth gave the Kiwanis a 3-2 lead.  A kick of a potential double play ball in the eighth allowed the Nationals third run to score, but it was to be the last tally of the night for the Nationals.

Racine posted an unearned run in the tenth to secure the victory.

Nationals starting pitcher, Johnny Arnold, gave a valient effort for the locals.  Coming off of 10 innings on Sunday, he pitched another 10 innings Tuesday in the complete game loss, allowing only one earned run.

Next up are the expansion Milwaukee Mets who come to Zirkel Field with an impressive 5-4 mark and a noteworthy victory over the otherwise undefeated Racine Kiwanis.  The two teams square off for a DH beginning at 6PM on Friday.
Six shutout innings and 4 RBI's?  Absolutely.

Patient Tim Spata took advantage of a rare opportunity, starting his first game on the mound in 2005.  Showing no signs of rust, Spata worked around jams in the first and sixth innings to post six scoreless innings against the Twins.  Not content with simple pitching prowess, Spata also contributed at the plate.  He knocked in two runs in the team's game-breaking, four run second inning and added two more RBI's with a seventh inning single.

Spata was not the only National with a strong performance against the Land O Lakes Northern Division leaders.  Jesse Hart went 4-5, with only a line out to left field keeping him from a perfect night.  Alex Franson added three hits, including two doubles.  In addition, Phil Gnacinski  knocked in his first two runs as a National before taking over on the mound and throwing three scoreless innings to close the game.

Had Tom Donovan been in attendance - not studying hard for a mid-term exam - he ,too, would have done well.  That's okay Wally Pipp -  first base is a tough position to fill.

Johnny Arnold was in Alabama for the game, but assures all that he would have been ready to pitch had he been called upon.  Johnny's never been one to allow simple matters of basic physics get in his way.

The Nationals will be off for the Holiday weekend, so hide the women and children.  Any updates over the fourth of July will be in the police blotter, not here.  Word is that Summerfest has beefed up security.

When the Nats return to action, it will be against a key league and divisional rival. On Tuesday July 5 the Nats will battle the Racine Kiwanis at Harden Field-Milwaukee at 7PM.  Tickets are going fast.

Two Nationals Sign Pro Contracts

Posted by Steve Elliott at Jun 28, 2005 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Congratulations to Kenny Poniewaz and Brandon Kellbach!

On Saturday, Kenny signed on to play with the Fullerton (CA) Flyers in the California Golden League.  He will get a shot to earn money playing the game we love and, hopefully, attain exposure and the eye of Major League scouts scattered throughout the state.

Not to be outdone, Brandon Kellbach agreed to terms yesterday with the Windy City Thunderbolts of the Frontier League.  Brandon will work out of the bullpen for his second Frontier League opportunity in the past two years.  Last season Brandon spent time with the Gateway Grizzlies.

Good luck men and remember your sandlot bretheren when you catch your break!

Let the record show that Johnny Arnold was pitching on ONE day's rest, not the two days mentioned in a previous article.

Again, in case you hadn't heard, Johnny Arnold was pitching on ONE day's rest last Tuesday, explaining why his stuff was POOOOpy.

Nats sneak by Kenosha

Posted by Steve Elliott at Jun 23, 2005 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Facing a strong opponent is always best when you can catch them at a weak moment.  Kenosha came to the park for a doubleheader Friday night knowing that they had 2 other doubleheaders were on the slate for Saturday and Sunday.    Mix in a little heat and humidity and you can generate a competitive edge.

Even so, the locals from West Allis had their own challenges.  Work and personal conflicts put the team in position to field a skeleton squad.   Lacking some key performers, the group present elevated its play and prevailed in game one of the doubleheader by a score of 2-1.

Leading the way was the pitching staff.  Jim Jungbauer started on the bump and threw 5 shutout innings before giving way to closer Brandon Kellbach.  After surrendering a run scoring triple in the sixth, Kellbach settled in an finished strong, culminating his performance with a stikeout of Kenosha's cleanup hitter, Jeremy Wilson.

The offense was again lead by Tom Donovan.  Donovan had two doubles and two walks in four plate appearances.  His second double scored Alex Franson and Jesse Hart with what proved to be the game winning runs.

Game two was postponed due to lightning and will be rescheduled in the near future.

Next up is  non-league opponent, Theinsville-Mequon on Thursday June 30 at 7PM at Simmons Field Milwaukee.
