Nats beat up on Mets

Posted by Steve Elliott at Jun 21, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The West Allis Nationals stumbled into their matchup against the Milwaukee Mets on Tuesday night at Harden Field. For the second game in a row the national anthem was botched, and if history were to repeat itself, that would not be a good thing. The Nats got on the board right away with 2 in the first on a Johnny Arnold sac fly and Tom Donovan RBI single. The Mets came back to tie it in the 3rd on 3 consecutive walks by Jim Jungbauer and a bloop single by Mets utilityman Jose Albino. The Nats would slowly add to the lead and with a 5-2 lead into the late innings. That was until with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 8th inning the veteran play of Alex Franson came into play. The ball was chopped at the shortstop and Franson shielded the fielder perfectly, distracting him enough to have it go between his legs into center for 2 runs. This opened the flood gates for the Nats and they would go on to push across 5 more runs to end the game early in the 8th by the mercy rule. The final score was 12-2. The Nats earned a much needed victory and finally caught some breaks. Jungbauer picked up his first victory on the year after a career long 2 game losing streak. Next up for the Nats are the McGuires Cat's in a double header on Saturday. Let's see if the winning can pick up!

White Sox bring out Brooms on Nationals

Posted by Steve Elliott at Jun 18, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
In a battle of cross-town rivals that puts brother against brother, the West Allis baseball supremacy in 2006 looks like it's in favor of the White Sox. That after they dismantled the Nationals 7-2 and 10-0 in a double header saturday at Zirkel Field. In game 1, Nationals castoff Tim Ustruck tossed 6 scoreless frames, giving up only 2 runs in the 7th as all of the offense allowed for the day. Ex-Huskie Matt Schrader hit a grand slam HR to left off of starter Curt Pryal, which made the score 7-0 at that point. In Game 2 it was RHP Corey Berndsen (Cardinal Stritch) vs. RHP Brian Long (Carthage) and it was Long who prevailed. He threw 6 shutout innings, only to not have to take the hill in the 7th after the White Sox made it a moot point by putting the game out of reach 10-0. It seems the power in the division has possibly shifted to the White Sox, Kiwanis and the Kings. The rest of the season will determine what is the fate of the 2006 Nationals, who face the Milwaukee Mets on Tuesday for the first time.

Kenosha Quiets Nationals Bats L4-0

Posted by Steve Elliott at Jun 13, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Tuesday night at Zirkel field put the Nationals agains the Kenosha Kings. Kenosha sent RHP Randy Johnson (UW-Whitewater) to the hill and he didn't disappoint. He threw his fastball right down the middle and overpowered the Nats all night. Johnson also mixed in a nice slurve and a pretty good splitter to keep the Nats guessing. The Nationals sent RHP Jim Jungbauer to the hill who took the ball for the 3rd time this season. He surrendured 1 run in the 1st, 2 in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th. That gave way to RHP Curt Pryal who threw shutout ball the rest of the way. Unfortunatly only Seth Kronke had a multi hit game and they never could get a runner as far as 3rd base. It was just one of those nights and as a player you have to have thick skin and a short memory after a game like this. Record-(4-5, 2-2) Next up: DH vs. West Allis Whitesox @ Zirkel

Gerhartz Picked Up by Northwoods League

Posted by Steve Elliott at Jun 9, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Andy Gerhartz became the 4th National in the past year to get a pro opportunity when he agreed to a 10 day contract last week with the Wisconsin Woodchucks of the Northwoods League.   Gerhartz has been a regular producing member of the starting lineup and will likely be signed to a longer deal in the near future.

Gerhartz joins last year's team and league batting champion, Jesse Hart, in the Northwoods League.   Hart was signed earlier by the La Crosse Loggers and is currently the team's starting second baseman.

Late last season the Nationals lost pitcher Brandon Kellbach to the Frontier League's Windy City Thunderbolts.   Kellbach remains in the bullpen this season.

Also lost was Ken Poniewaz.    Poniewaz, a shortstop, was signed away by the California Golden League last year and had a brief stay before being released.
