Baseball is back....even if Spring hasn't yet arrived.
The West Allis Nationals travelled to Genoa City Friday night for a pre-season tilt against the Red Dogs.
The locals, buoyed by the play of some young talent, prevailed 7-2.
The schoolboy battery of Sam Michalski and Alex Elliott led the team to any early lead and they never looked back. Michalski started on the bump and threw 4 shutout innings before deferring to veteran Mitch Lochen. Michalski was sharp, allowing only 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out 4.
Elliott led the offense, going 3-4 with 3 RBI and reached base 5 times on the night.
Next up is the 15th annual northern road trip. The team will play Menasha on Friday the 16th and then head to Marinette for a three game set on Saturday and Sunday.
Arenson Strong in Title-Clinching Performance
Aug 16, 2013
Duluth, Minn (August 16th, 2013)--The Madison Mallards won their second Summer Collegiate World Series behind a strong offensive performance and a great effort on the mound from Andrew Arenson (Carthage College).
Arenson pitched five innings and allowed just one run. He gave up four hits and three walks, but he was able to strand the majority of runners to keep the Huskies down as the offense built a huge lead.
The Mallards won their second Northwoods League title and first since 2004.
