VILFHA would like to acknowledge the passing of Benita Yorck (Hibbert) who passed away peacefully on Dec. 28, 2017 at the age of 84.

“When we played together, she was the heart of the Oak Bay Ladies Field Hockey Club,” said Pat Hall, long-time VILFHA member and coach/organizer of the current Oak Bay Hockey Club. “She was an outstanding centre half, a worker for the game, our social directer and just a classy lady.”

Benita’s father-in-law donated ‘The Hibbert Trophy’ intended for the Most Outstanding Player on the Oak Bay team. “Nita” as her team mates called her, re-donated it to the league and pushed to have the trophy be awarded to the Most Outstanding Player in the entire VILFHA league and it is to this date still awarded for that.

From the Times Colonist Obituary:
YORCK, Benita (Hibbert) December 11, 1933 – December 28, 2017 Our Mother, Benita Yorck passed away peacefully in her home December 28, 2017 at the age of 84 with her three children at her side. She was born on December 11, 1933 in a small country village (Sarisbury Green) in Southampton, England. Immigrated to Canada in 1952 to Halifax, NS and finally moved to Victoria, BC in 1954 where she raised her family and resided for the remainder of her life. Benita was always seen with a beautiful smile on her face and was very well known in the community of Oak Bay through her various volunteering works over the last 10 years with the Monterey Rec. Centre, Oak Bay Rec. Centre, Henderson Rec. Centre and the Oak Bay United Church. Benita is survived by her brother Peter Scott and family, daughter Alannah Hanlen (Alan), sons Richard Hibbert (Isobel) and Peter Hibbert (Leah) and three grandchildren Tristan, Jaryd and Brianna. Benita did not want a formal service but wanted all her friends and family to know that she cherished every moment she had with you. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Monterey Recreation Activity Association (care of Yvonne Stewart at the Monterey Centre) in Benita Yorck’s name to support their program activities. As a new year and the second half of the season is now underway the VILFHA executive would like to send this reminder to players, coaches, officials and spectators. This is a reminder that there is a VILFHA Code of Conduct (see link below) that highlights fair play, respect and the overall goals of showing the sport of field hockey in a positive light.

Though it is a game and moments of it are competitive and may be heated, there are a variety of ages and skill levels out on the field and regardless of personal opinions of what is happening, who is doing it or what their intent might be, it is important for everyone to check in with themselves about how their behaviour or words might affect another person or how it might be perceived by people walking by. It should be in all of VILFHA’s membership’s best interest to show our sport as an inclusive, positive, competitive and recreational activity that would be welcoming to anyone walking past the field.

Utilize the officials, coaches and team managers if you have a personal issue with an opponent or other player. Inappropriate language or dissent towards any personnel on the field is not good for anyone. Everyone should exercise self-control at all times.

As it states in the code of conduct, we should all: Inspire a love of game and a desire to compete fairly.

The Umpires’ Association will be holding an early season briefing on October 2, 7-9 pm at Uvic (room tba).

The briefing will be lead by Chris Wilson and will go over a variety of topics. Luckily thought, no new rules! Topics will include:

New positioning recommendations (recently distributed by FHBC – let Denise know if you didn’t get a copy)
Game management
Aerial balls and safety
Preparation
FIH has turned their annual umpire’s briefing into a video. Please watch this video before the briefing – before you umpire if you can: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5gbPmcF0u8

All umpires are expected attend this briefing. Coaches and players are welcome too.

Please note, this session is for education, not rehashing events of past games. These types of discussion take up valuable time and don’t really serve the purpose we are trying to achieve.

Please RSVP to Denise denise.mcgeachy@gmail.com by September 30th.
