5/28/18-Aurora, IL

Team Chicago 2004 Premier won the top flight World Cup bracket of the Schaumburg Memorial Day Challenge this weekend.

Friday night, they battled Eclipse North to a 0-0 tie. Saturday, they beat a gritty FC Mustangs team 1-0 on a nice lofted goal from Sophia “Sett” Trevino. Sunday, they finally figured out how to finish and won 5-1 against a very strong Gateway Rush team that was ranked 16th in the state. Maya Moore opened up scoring in the first half with a lovely left-footed finish from the left flank. Emma Spitz was able to capitalize on defensive errors and made it 3-0 before half. Sophia Broughton finished a breakaway in the second half. Maggie Leger capped off scoring late in the game. Despite the heat and numerous injuries, the 04 squad beat CFJ City 2-0 in their final game. Keira Byrnes had a breakaway that the goalie made an excellent save on but gave up a rebound, and Camille Gray was there to put it away. Then, Ally Purcell calmly finished a PK after Kylee McCarty got fouled.

The only goal conceded the entire tournament was on a hand ball PK call. Maggie Leger and Shaye Smith combined for 3 shutouts. Defensive unit of Rhea Marlovits, Alex Wheeler, Kayla Vogt, Ally Purcell, Estelle Moran, Sammie Scalzo, and Keira Byrnes stayed organized and showed great poise throughout the tournament.

This tournament is the third tournament 2004 Premier has won this year. Coach Anny Bierman is very proud of these young women and their ability to finish the season strong!
