On the first day of the spring equinox , Hawks proved a little more adjusted to the earlier start and got back on the winning line Sunday, handing the Mutineers a 5-1 loss in Vancouver Island Field Hockey Association men’s league play at the UVic turf.
Hawks (5-7-0), their lineup boosted by a handful of non-designated Tigers players, got a pair of goals from Javier Virk and singles from Amit Dillon, Vardeep Gill and Yashpal Bassi.
The Hawks were coming off a 7-4 loss to Marauders the week before and restored their five-point margin over Marauders with the win.
Thomas White redirected a bouncing pass from Mark Baggott in the second half for the Mutineers’ lone goal. The green guys’ record dropped to 2-2-2 with the loss.
Game 2 on the day saw Rebels (8-2-1) pad their division lead with a 5-0 shutout of Marauders (3-7-1). Coming off a 1-1 tie against Mutineers last week, the Rebels benefitted from the steadying influence of veterans Chris Wilson and Jim Knight in the back and Chris Davis in the middle – all absent last week.
Chris Dahl led the attack with a pair of goals on the day, while Davis, Dale Kirk and Kevin Dahl added singles. Felix Randall posted the shutout in the win.
Competitive division action saw Tigers defeat Rebels 9-5 in the final game of the day.
Josh Brown exploded for four goals to led the offence for Tigers, who also got a pair from Javier Virk and singles from Sahjun Sehmi, Sunny Kahlon and Peter Zimunya. Rebels tallies came from Gavin O’Halloran, with two, and Alex Moore, Michael Bryan and Mike Cleverly, with one each.
Next week’s action (March 20) sees clubmates Marauders and Mutineers go head to head at 9:30 a.m., followed by Rebels 2 vs Hawks at 11 a.m. and Tigers vs, UVic Vikes at 12:30 p.m.

Tigers have topped the Vancouver Island Field Hockey Association’s competitive division table since the outset of the season, largely through having a lot of weapons in their arsenal.
That depth was on display Sunday in a 9-2 win over Rebels on the UVic turf, as Judas Perera, Javier Virk and Josh Brown found the net twice each to pace the attack, while singles came from Gurjot Bedi, Sunny Kahlon and Amit Dillon.
Michael Bryan and Sean Bryan tallied for the Rebels against Tigers keeper Tom Pennells.
In rec division play, the Hawks started off the day with a 6-1 win over Rebels 2, led with three-goal performances from Javier Virk and Hardeep Grewal. Newcomer Gavin O’Halloran, a former Jokers player from the mainland, was the lone Rebel to beat Hawks keeper Iqbal Virk in the contest.
The recreational inter-club Sunday saw Marauders and Mutineers play to a scoreless draw. While the first half saw both teams take a rather cautious approach, the shorthanded Marauders, boosted with the addition of Ross Whelan in the midfield – which drew them even in terms of numbers – enjoyed the run of the play in the second half. Pennells and the Mutineers defenders had to be sharp, with the Marauders creating and looking to pounce on numerous loose balls in front of the net.
This Thursday at 6:15 p.m. the UVic Vikes return to action with a game against Rebels 1, while Sunday play March 6 sees Mutineers and Rebels 2 lead things off at 9:30 a.m., followed by Hawks vs. Marauders at 11 a.m. and Tigers vs. Vikes at 12:30 p.m.

Following a flooded/frosty mishap that rendered the UVic turf unusable for the first game of the day between the Vikes vs. Tigers, the recreational division commanded the spotlight on the day in Vancouver Island Field Hockey Association play Sunday (Feb. 13).
Were it not for the fierce play of Marauders goalkeeper Kelvin Kum, the 3-1 winning score for Rebels 2 would likely have been much more lopsided. Kum kicked out numerous tough shots by the determined Rebels, who nonetheless got goals from Chris Davis, Dave Kerr and Kevin Dahl to secure the victory. The division-leading men in red improved to 7-1 on the season.
Iosvani Marrero, on loan from the clubmate Mutineers, scored the lone goal for the Marauders, who dropped to 2-6.
In the second game of the day, the Mutineers trailed 3-2 at halftime to Hawks but poured it on with four goals in the second half to score a 6-4 win.
Thomas White had himself a season-best two goal game to pace the Mutineers’ attack, while Marrero, Peter van den Berg, Nic Loewen and Shaun Wuth, playing his second game of the day, added singles.
Hawks goal scorers were not recorded.
This Thursday’s competitive division game (Feb. 17) between Vikes and Rebels 1 has been postponed, and this upcoming Family Day weekend, which coincides with reading break at UVic, sees all teams given the Sunday off from the schedule.
League play resumes Feb. 27.

Two goals from field hockey “rookie” Dale Kirk and singles from the Wheatley brothers, Calder and Ben, carried Rebels 2 to a 4-2 victory over Mutineers in Vancouver Island Field Hockey League play Sunday (Feb. 6) on the UVic turf.
The win was Rebels’ sixth of the season against just one loss and keeps them atop the recreational division table. The loss evened Mutineers record to 1-1, having joined the fray at the start of the second half of the season. Peter van den Berg tallied both goals for the men in green.
Also on the day Hawks got past Marauders 3-2, paced by a two-goal performance from the always elusive Javier Virk and one from youngster Devin Virk. Scoring for Marauders were Chase Stiles and Tom Vincent.
The last game of the day saw UVic Vikes emerge from their winter break to post a 4-1 win over Rebels 1 in competitive division play. The second-place Vikes were led with a three-goal performance by Arthur Valdivieso and pushed over the .500 mark with their fifth win in nine games. Former Rebels player Ryan Knight also scored for Vikes, while Daniel Gillott tallied for Rebels.
Next week’s rescheduled competitive game between the front-running Tigers and the Vikes starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by Marauders vs. Rebels 2 at 11 a.m. and Hawks vs. Mutineers at 12:30 p.m.

The Victoria Junior Field Hockey Association (VJFHA) is excited to announce that the 2022 Junior League season will be running from April 9 to June 19, 2022 for all ages U6 to U18 boys and girls.

Registration will open Friday, February 11 at 7:00 a.m. and it will be first-come, first-served.

There will be a registration cap on each of the age groups. With UVic’s water-based turf being resurfaced this year we may be restricted to only one rubber-based field at UVic and this would limit our capacity per age group. Should a second field become available we will automatically start putting players on teams from the waitlist. We hope this will be the case.

We know that protocols in sport can change so we will be ready to pivot if the Public Health Officer, ViaSport, Field Hockey BC or UVic require us to do so. For now though, you can expect a fairly normal season. Unlike last season, this year we will not require the daily health check, the capacity of players per field/team, masks, etc., however we will still required everyone coming to the venue to do a daily health check. If you have COVID-19 or flu-like symptoms we would request that you stay home.

Spectators will be allowed at the venue but we will be restricted to a 50% capacity of spectators.
