Former Canadian men’s national team head coach Paul Bundy will be in Victoria in parallel with the U SPORTS Women’s Field Hockey Championships to host two clinics – one for athletes and one for coaches. Bundy has over 20 years of experience as a full-time professional coach including over 250 games on the international scene. Bundy qualified the Canadian men’s program for two-consecutive Olympic Games (2016, 2020) and has led the Red Caribou in the 2018 World Cup, three Commonwealth Games, three Pan American Cups, three Pan American Games and he has also coached in three Junior World Cups.

Purpose

After a two-year hiatus, the prestigious Bridgman Cup high school field hockey tournament will finally return to the University of Victoria campus this weekend, Friday, Oct. 7 to Sunday, Oct. 9. In addition, it will be the first major event on the newly-laid water-based pitch at UVic that opens just this week.

The tournament brings together several of the province’s best high school girls field hockey programs and is a showcase for island hockey talent. It’s also an opportunity for local officials (technical and umpires) to take part in a three-day tournament. The last edition ran in 2019, while the tournament has been running since 1937.

Island teams taking part this year include Cowichan Secondary, Shawnigan Lake, St. Michael’s University School and Oak Bay, while several historic programs like Handsworth, Collingwood, South Delta, Argyle and Kelowna help round out the 12-team tournament.

The Bridgman Cup is the oldest field hockey tournament in North America. The silver cup donated by Commander Montague Bridgman, was a trophy to be played for annually among the few teams in Victoria and Duncan. Specially designed pins were presented to the winners, the prototype kept on file at Birks, and the pin ceremony tradition continues to this day.

In 2019, Oak Bay won the Bridgman Cup title for the first time since 1937 knocking off Handsworth in an exciting shootout after a 1-1 regulation time score. Also happening at the tournament will be the presentation of the Stephanie Doney (Johnston) Award, last awarded in 2019 to Nora Schrutrup.

This year the tournament is chaired by Shelley Andrews and is organized by a fabulous group of volunteers including Gillian Braun, Nancy Griffin, Denise Hall, Pat Hall, Bunny Hughes, Alanna Martin, Nancy Mollenhauer, Brenda Rushton, Alison Sweeten, Carrie Trumpy, Sandy Zinkowski.

Everyone is encouraged to come out to watch and support the return of one of B.C.’s favourite hockey tournaments. In addition, Hockey King Sports, a Vancouver-based field hockey equipment provider, will be on site on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Vancouver Island will be well represented at the upcoming Masters World Cup hosted in Capetown, South Africa from Oct. 1-10, 2022. Jim Knight, David Kerr, Chris Wilson and Andrew Mackinnon will all dawn the red and white as part of Canada’s Over 50s team competing in a 14-team tournament.

Canada 050s will square off in pool play with the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, Argentina and two local-based teams. Up first will be a game against Pan American rivals Argentina on Oct. 1, while they have a day break before they play hosts, South Africa.

The team is led by head coach John Sacre, who also coached Victoria’s Jim Knight and Clive Wheatley, at the 2018 edition hosted in Barcelona, Spain. Wheatley was originally named to the South African roster but was made a reserve following injury.

Canada has no women’s teams at the event but current long-time Sailors FHC women’s player, current FHBC President and VILFHA past president, Denise McGeachy, was appointed to the event as an umpire.

While long overdue, the Vancouver Island Ladies Field Hockey Association (VILFHA) are excited to host a celebration event and fundraiser in honour of long-time field hockey builder Patricia Hall who was inducted in to the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame in October 2021. On May 8, 2021 the Board of the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame (GVSHoF) announced the names of the athletes and builders who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2020. She was finally honoured in person in October 2021.

In addition to four athletes – Bobby Ross (Rugby), Bob McLaren (Athletics), Joanne Mick (Softball) and Donnie Orr (Boxing) – our very own Pat Hall will be inducted as a Builder for Multi-Sports, along with the Vancouver Island Soccer League.

“For over 50 years, Pat has been involved with Field Hockey locally, provincially and nationally at all levels of the game from junior to senior. From 1961 to 1988, she was an active player with the Vancouver Island Ladies Field Hockey Association (VILFA). She began coaching in 1970 and umpiring in 1973, co-founding the South Island Field Hockey Umpires Association in 1988.

Although retiring as an umpire in 2000, Pat continues to coach teams in various divisions. Pat served on the executive of the VILFHA for over 40 years and has held many positions on the Boards of the BC and Canadian Women’s Field Hockey Associations.

She has received numerous awards over the years including Victoria Sports Person of the Year, Sport BC President’s Award, VILFHA Life Membership and, in 2013, the VILFA introduced the Pat Hall Officials Development Award.
Her contributions to Softball are almost as numerous. She became involved with the Stuffy McGinnis Softball League in 1960 and served as President from 1975-1993. From 1987 to 1999, Pat was Softball BC Senior District Coordinator and in 1996, led the restructuring of junior softball into three levels.”

Field Hockey BC has officially launched their new Membership Registration System Partnership with Field Hockey Canada for 2022-23. This is important for all members:

- Every field hockey player, coach and official is required to register as an individual member ahead of active participation in any given season. The calendar season is September 1st to August 31st inclusive. ​
- Each member is required to pay a membership fee to BOTH Field Hockey BC (FHBC) and Field Hockey Canada (FHC) unless otherwise stated
- The online membership registration system will provide the opportunity for the payment of both FHBC and FHC fees within a single transaction. These fees will not need to be considered as part of your annual club fee structure.
- All individual memberships will involve an online registration process, the system for which is accessible from the FHBC website.
- Members only need to formally register as a member in ONE category.
- Some members may be players, coaches and/or officials and under these circumstances, members are required to register in the category with the HIGHEST fee (see the table here for reference).
- The option to register will be open throughout the year with the membership year again running September 1 – August 31. – Memberships purchased at any point in the season will always and only be valid until August 31 of that same season.
