The Canadian Men’s Field Hockey Team has announced the roster of players that will compete for 2016 Olympic qualification at the World League Semi-Finals in Buenos Aires, Argentina from June 3rd-14th, 2015.

Included in that list is Victoria native James Kirkpatrick. The former University of Victoria Vikes men’s field hockey player will be joined by other Vikes and former Vikes Brenden Bissett and Matthew Sarmento.

Of the eighteen athletes named to the touring roster, seventeen were a part of the Men’s National Team that finished third at World League Round 2 in San Diego, California in March.

The World League Semi-Final is an Olympic qualifying event from which the top three finishers of ten teams earn spots at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

With its win against Russia and the third place finish at World League 2, Canada ensured itself two opportunities to qualify for the 2016 Olympics; the first being a top three finish at the Semi-Finals, the second by winning the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto this summer.

In Buenos Aires in June, Canada is grouped with Austria, Germany, Spain, and host Argentina in Pool B. Pool A consists of Egypt, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.

Canada’s first match at the World League Semi-Finals is on June 3 against Spain at 6:00pm local time. Canada’s full schedule and results are available at the Field Hockey Canada website.

The World League team will be training in Toronto from May 27th-29th at the new Pan Am Fields before heading to Argentina.

Also representing Canada in Argentina is Judge Tony Stewart.

The Victoria Junior Field Hockey Association is recruiting coaches and soon to be coaches to help our wonderful program that spreads our favourite sport of field hockey to the developing youth. It is great to enjoy PLAYING but we can learn a lot about ourselves as coaches AND we need to continue to give back and develop the league to keep our sport growing! Be a part of that movement and it starts RIGHT NOW!

I am the Master Coach for the Victoria Junior Field Hockey Association and my job is to help coach the coaches – that’s YOU! Regardless of your expertise, ability or experience YOU are a fitting coach for this league as long as you want to help grow the game and you enjoy the sport yourself :) Now, stay with me…

This year’s league starts April 11 (boys) and April 12 (girls) and runs to June 22. Don’t worry you are allowed to have other commitments and go on holidays. I will shuffle coaches around to meet YOUR flexibility and schedule! I still want your commitment so IF you are event the slightest bit interested and want to ask super specific questions about any hesitations just e-mail me back and let me know the following:

1. Are you interested in helping coach April 11-June 22 (all sessions at UVic) ?
2. Specify if you have a preference for a particular day/time OR what gender and age group you want to coach (specify if you have no preference)
3. Specify if you have someone you want to coach WITH (whether that’s a specific person or for ex. you want to learn from a more experienced coach)
4. Specify what role you think YOU would take on if you know (lead coach, assistant coach, parent coach)
5. Would you be interested in helping in multiple age groups?

That being said, here are the commitments and age groups;

Under 15: Saturdays 10:45-11:45 am & Tuesdays 6:15-7:15 pm
Under 18: Tuesdays 7:30-9 pm

There will be a Coaches Meeting on April 7th and April 8th at UVic’s McKinnon Building, Room 150, from 7:00-8:30pm. You must attend one of these sessions.

Before you get intimidated by commitments – did I mention that a Master Coach will typically be at your sessions to help you out and guide you and help YOU learn! ALSO EVERY session comes with a practice plan! SO, all I need from you is your time and commitment and if you aren’t entirely sure yet – just e-mail me back to let me know you are interested.

All of the league information is available online at victoriajuniorfieldhockey.ca

Looking forward to hearing back from each of you! Please pass this on to anyone else you think might be a fitting and/or interested coach in our spring league. Everyone is welcome to help!

PLEASE RESPOND BY FRIDAY, MARCH 20!

As of Jan. 1, 2015, the newly-announced changes and additions to the rules as outlined by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) will be in effect.

An OPEN rules briefing and education session will be held on both Jan. 5 and 8. All umpires must attend one of the sessions, while it also strongly encouraged for team captains and any VILFHA members to also attend. This will be a gradual learning process for everyone involved and the more people that attend a briefing, the quicker the education process.

WHAT: 2015 Rules Briefing
WHEN: January 5 and 8, 2015 from 7-9 p.m.
WHERE: Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE), Room 329A (4371 Interurban Road)
WHO: Lead by Chris Wilson

Please review the latest rule change publication PRIOR to attending the session here:
