Zizzer boys lose to No. 5 Springfield Glendale
BY AMANDA JONES
Quill Staff Writer
Members of the West Plains Zizzer boys varsity basketball team dropped their season record to 6-7 following their 67-50 loss to state-ranked Springfield Glendale Friday at the West Plains High School gym. The Zizzers are 0-1 in the Ozark Conference.
“Even though we lost, I thought it was respectable,” Zizzer Head Coach Randy Schutjer said. “They are ranked fifth in the state and are a good basketball team. I think our boys competed and I’m proud of them.”
The Zizzers trailed Glendale 17-11 at the end of the first quarter, 34-27 at the half and 54-34 at the end of the third quarter.
“We basically played with them for three quarters but bad passing decisions and some key turnovers led to Glendale outscoring us 20-7 in the third quarter. We still haven’t found a way to put an entire game together,” Schutjer said. “With several of our losses we have played three solid quarters but haven’t been able to put it all together.
“Another contributing factor to our loss was that we had a total of 28 rebounds and 24 of those were defensive. We needed to go to the offensive boards better and our 24 turnovers hurt us.
“Even though we lost, I think we can improve and get something out of this loss because Glendale is a great team. Overall, I’m pleased with the effort. They (Zizzers) didn’t back down an inch and never gave up. We can be a better basketball team and have areas that we can improve on but I’m proud of our effort.
“Andrew Boyce was again our leading scorer with 17 points and he went to the boards well with 11 rebounds,” Schutjer said. “Nick Draper had three nice three’s to close the gap several times.”
Also scoring for the Zizzers were Nick Draper with 9 points, Eric Moss 7, Garrett Loring 5, Kyle Townsend 4, Ryan Newton 2, Stan Judd 2, Phillip Saner 2 and James Guilliams 2.
Scoring for Glendale were Brandon Kimbrough with 16 points, Ryan Luethy 15, Jason Bueker 14, Justin Williamson 13, Andy Garwitz 4, Tyler Hesser 3 and Kevin Shultz 2.
The junior varsity Zizzers fell to Springfield Glendale 59-56. Their record is 7-2.
The JV and varsity Zizzers will take on the Ava Bears Tuesday at the West Plains High School gym. The JV Zizzers game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with the varsity game following.
