The Estilo Twins won their second straight 18AAA league championship, coming from behind to nip the Arrigo Dodgers 3-2 at the Lantana Sports Complex February 13. The Twins were down to their final four outs before staging a two out rally in the bottom of the 8th inning to tie the game, then won it with a singleton in the bottom of the ninth. Trailing 2-0 with two outs in the 8th inning, the Twins tied it on a single by Melvin Bruno, a double by Geraldo Vasquez and a two run triple by Ricky Dominguez, just beyond the diving effort of Dodgers' first baseman Billy Brescia. Gustavo Lopez came on to relieve Dodgers' starter Carlos Dominguez and got the elusive third out of the inning. However, Diego Santos doubled to lead off the fateful 9th. The Dodgers issued an intentional walk to Jose Acuna. Juan Arroyo hit into a force play at second, but beat the relay, putting runners at first and third. Alberto Lambis then hit a high chopper on which shortstop Edgar Tovar could not make a play as Santos raced in from third with the winning run. The Dodgers scored a run in the second on a double by Francis Dinzey and an RBI single to left by Willie Martinez. Dinzey made it 2-0 with a single to right in the 6th, but Twins' starter Acuna slammed the door, getting the final three outs, leaving runners at second and third. Pat Prescott came on to pitch two perfect innings to get the win over Lopez, who relieved Dodgers' starter Carlos Dominguez after yielding the game tying triple by Ricky Dominguez. Lambis, who had two hits in the game, was chosen as the game's Most Valuable Player. The 18AA game saw the Metric Engineering Cubans take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth, only to see the Seminoles post four runs to take a 5-2 advantage and never look back. The Cubans scored a second inning run off Seminoles' starter Steve Prince. Juan Panta walked, was forced at second by Jesus Ferrer and after Darien Viera doubled Ferrer to third, Prince uncorked a wild pitch for the game's first run. The Cubans made it 2-0 without a hit in the fourth off Seminoles' reliever Jerry Jarido. Viera drew a walk, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error on his steal of third. The 'Noles came back with a run in the fourth. Steve Prince crushed one to left field which was originally ruled a home run, but changed to a ground rule double when the umpires ruled it had not cleared the screen in left. Prince eventually scored on a single by Danny Rivera. Metric was its own worst enemy in the fifth inning. Carlos Dominguez was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a fly out to center and scored on the first two balk calls against Cubans' starter Ramon Linares. John Bagatta's two run single off reliever Miguel Gonzalez put the Seminoles ahead 4 to 2 and Joe Prince singled home Bagatta to make it a 5-2. The Noles added single runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th before the Cubans scored a final run in the 9th inning to make the final score 8-3. Jarido pitched seven strong relief innings, notching ten strikeouts to earn Most Valuable Player honors. Both of the runs he gave up were unearned. LOS TIGRES AND ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA WIN CITRUS CLASSIC TITLES. Los Tigres won the Citrus Classic Wood Bat Tournament championship for the second time on Monday, blanking another NABA Palm Beach team, the Rockhounds 7-0 for the 18AA title at the Santaluces Complex in Lantana. The Alexandria (VA) Athletics took the 18A title, outlasting the Palm Beach Expos 11-7. Both division champions finished with unblemished 5-0 records during the three day tournament. Los Tigres shut out the Dobson Roofing Hurricanes, another Palm Beach league team, 11-0 Monday morning to earn the championship berth against the Rockhounds. Francis Dinzey blasted a 3-run homer in the first inning for the only runs the Tigres would need. CJ Huffman pitched a shutout for the Tigres. In the other semifinal, the Hounds avenged a previous 16-2 tournament loss to the Daytona Yankees by besting the Yanks 4-2 to earn a trip to the finals against Los Tigres. Pat Prescott pitched the complete game win for the Rockhounds. In the 18AA championship, Wilson Ciprian (5IP, W) and Gustavo Lopez (4IP, save) teamed up to blank the Rockhounds on six hits. Ciprian recorded seven strikeouts, Lopez fanned eight. Francis Dinzey led the Tigres' offense with two doubles, two singles, two runs batted in and two runs scored. He was selected as the game's MVP. Billy Brescia also banged out two doubles, driving in one run and scoring one. Four pitchers, including three from the first place Estilo Twins and one from the Palm Beach Rockhounds, combined to pitch a six hitter as the Nationals nipped the Americans 3-1 in the 2004 fall league’s 18AAA All Star game at Lantana Sports Complex Wednesday night, December 22. Jose Acuna (Estilo Twins) pitched the first three innings, yielding only one hit, walking two and striking out seven. Twins’ teammate Pete Fuster went two, giving up three hits and no runs. He struck out three. Rockhounds’ lefty Dave Henderson gave up only one hit and notched one strikeout in his two innings, and the Twins’ Jose Espino earned a save by pitching the final two. The Americans scored their only run off Espino, but it was unearned after a two out infield error in the bottom of the ninth inning. Espino was touched for one hit and walked a batter and also had one strikeout. The teams battled through the first four innings in a scoreless tie. While Acuna was blanking the Americans, Gustavo Lopez (Arrigo Dodgers) pitched three hitless innings, and struck out six. Mike Smollon (ACA Security Mets) added one more scoreless inning until the Nationals finally broke through with three runs in the fifth inning to take a lead they would never relinquish. Espino led off the fifth, grounding one through the hole into left field, and was seemingly picked off first base by Smollon, but Dodgers first baseman Billy Brescia’s throw was mishandled by the Mets’ Romy Ones and Espino continued on to third. Diego Santos (Twins) beat out an infield single and Espino scored the first run of the game. Clayton Joiner (Rockhounds) and Acuna followed with singles, Santos scoring on and Joiner moving to third. He scored on an infield roller by the Brewers’ Duane Cyr. Acuna was then caught stealing third when Smollon fired to shortstop Francis Dinzey (Arrigo Dodgers) who threw a strike to third sacker Jim Bergman (Dobson Roofing Hurricanes), but the damage had been done. The Nationals went scoreless the rest of the way. Jose Pena (Hurricanes) pitched two innings, giving up only a double to Espino, and striking out four. Carlos Dominguez (Dodgers) hurled two perfect innings and registered four strikeouts. The American squad finally got on the board in the bottom of the 9th, with a little help from the Nationals’ defense. Lopez led off the ninth by drawing a walk. Dominguez singled to right, putting runners at first and second. Amado Dinzey (Mets) hit a ground ball to second, where Santos tagged Dominguez out, but Dinzey beat out his throw to first. Lopez moved to third on the attempted double play. Espino struck out Brescia, but shortstop Geraldo Vasquez booted a grounder by Francis Dinzey, scoring Lopez with the only Americans run of the night. Espino then got Brian Fitzsimmons (Dodgers) to ground out to Santos to end it. Fuster was credited with the win, Smollon was the losing pitcher, and Espino got the save. Espino, with a double and single, was the only National player with more than one hit. Francis Dinzey had two of the American squad’s six hits. Pitching was so dominant that the two teams combined for 27 strikeouts. American pitchers recorded 15 strikeouts, the Nationals had twelve. The game was played in a brisk two hours, sixteen minutes. Acuna was selected as the game’s Most Valuable Player on the strength of his strong pitching performance and an RBI single. He will receive an NABA All Star game MVP plaque. All participants will receive an NABA commemorative All Star shirt. Miguel Cuello substituted for Nelson Sanchez (Twins) as manager.
