Torrey Pines senior gets the final word

Posted by Jeri Buchanan at May 26, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

By Terry Monahan11:16 P.M.MAY 25, 2013

On Thursday, Rachel Nasland, who pitched Torrey Pines High to the San Diego Section Division I championship in 2012, made two mistakes in the softball semifinals.

The senior misplayed two bunts and it cost her team the game and forced the Falcons into the loser’s bracket.

Nasland more than made up for having to play one extra game by tossing a one-hitter in a 1-0 win over Carlsbad on Saturday night in the championship game at UC San Diego in a rematch of last year’s final.

“Two is harder than one,” Falcons coach Jon Moore said.

Unless you have Nasland.

Torrey Pines (21-9-2) won 1-0 last year, but it took 10 innings.

This time, Nasland (19-7) won a pitcher’s duel with Carlsbad senior Shelley Procter (18-3).

Nasland did not surrender a hit until pinch-hitter Kamalani Peneku’s one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

After issuing a leadoff walk, Nasland, who struck out eight, retired the next 18 batters.

“Rachel is the best pitcher in the county,” Moore said.

Torrey Pines scored in the first inning when Emma Wong singled and took second on a throwing error. She was sacrificed to third and scored on catcher Shelby Evans’ groundout.

“Losing that (semifinal) game made it tougher on us,” Nasland said. “I owed it to the team to fix it.”
