NC Times-PREP SOFTBALL: Top 10 teams
1. Carlsbad
Loaded with pitching, hitting, speed and defense.
2. Bonita Vista
Should challenge for the CIF San Diego Section title that eluded the Barons in 2010. Already has a victory over No. 1 Carlsbad.
3. Torrey Pines
No team has more pitching than the Falcons with Nasland, Hynes and Lee.
4. Poway
Graduated a lot, but returns Palomar League pitcher of the year.
5. Santana
The Sultans are considered a frontrunner in Division III.
6. Patrick Henry
Eyeing its first section title since 2005.
7. Grossmont
Won first CIF title since 1989 last year and intends to repeat in Division I.
8. West Hills
Shocked Bonita Vista in Division II finals in 2011.
9. Rancho Bernardo
The Broncos may be young, but they're considered a contender by most coaches.
10. Mira Mesa
The Marauders always contend.

In alphabetical order Jacque Batchelder, SS, Carlsbad, Sr. Flashy power numbers with seven homers, 30 RBIs and a .419 average in 2011. Alayna Brenman, RHP, Poway, Jr. Palomar League's best pitcher in 2011, compiled a 17-2 record, 0.89 ERA. Christina Clermont, RHP, San Marcos, Jr. Could be county's top pitcher after 18-10 season with 1.33 ERA as a sophomore Hailey Drew, SS, Fallbrook, So. Dangerous hitter batted .532 with 15 RBIs as a freshman. Kailey Drew, 3B-RHP, Fallbrook, Sr. She batted .469 with 16 RBIs in 2011. Cheyenne Garcia, SS, Rancho Buena Vista, Sr. Three-sport star, she's one of the best athletes in the county. Leah Gordon, C, Rancho Bernardo, Sr. A .323 hitter, she drove in 15 runs as a junior. Brooke Huddleson, C, Mission Hills, Sr. She must provide the pop in the middle of the Grizzlies' lineup. Lauren Hynes, LHP-1B, Torrey Pines, Sr. Hitting or pitching, she's as good a player as there is in the county. Tara Kliebenstein, SS, El Camino, Jr. Hit .315 with 18 RBIs last year and will be better this year. Faith Kraatz, SS, Tri-City Christian, Sr. Drove in every big run and had 36 RBIs to go with .451 average in 2011. Maren Lebsock, SS, San Pasqual, Sr. On a team with a .258 average, she batted .322 with 13 RBIs. Taylor Lee, RHP-3B, Torrey Pines, Sr. Took over on the mound when teammate Rachel Nasland was injured in 2011, but her bat is potent as well. Sasha Marguiles, C, Westview, Sr. A steady run-producer for the Wolverines since her first day on the job. Rachel Nasland, RHP, Torrey Pines, Jr. Shoulder injury cost her most of last year, but she's healthy now. Tori Nirschl, CF, Carlsbad, Sr. Leadoff hitter belted 12 homers with 29 RBIs and a .432 average in 2011. Shelley Procter, RHP, Carlsbad, Jr. Showed lots of promise with 6-4 record and a 2.57 ERA in 2011. Alexis Ramirez, 1B, San Marcos, Sr. Knights' best hitter batted .373 with 13 RBIs in 2011. Delynn Rippy, OF, El Camino, Jr. A .438 hitter who led the Wildcats in triples last season. Sara White, RHP, Rancho Bernardo, So.
