LA JOLLA ---- A power outage at UC San Diego on Saturday forced the postponement of the CIF San Diego Section Division I softball championship game between Torrey Pines High and Carlsbad.

The other four divisional championship games went on as scheduled at UCSD during daylight hours Saturday. But with the Division I game slated for 7 p.m. and the Tritons Stadium lights out of commission, officials were forced to move the game.

It will be played Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at UCSD.

The power at UCSD went out about noon Saturday when the main transformer that feeds the campus caught fire. Power was transferred to a backup transformer, which quickly shut down.

Section commissioner Jerry Schniepp said he was told earlier in the day that there was a chance power could be restored in time to play the night game. But at 6:50 p.m., he announced the postponement.

"We did all we could, waited as long as we could," Schniepp said. "Without power, we had no lights."

Schniepp said he tried to secure an alternative site to stage the game Saturday night but could not find an available facility.

The early games at Tritons Stadium were played without a scoreboard

Game officials did not have access to the scoreboard during the early games, and the public address announcer used a bullhorn. The stadium restroom facilities were closed.

Tickets purchased for Saturday's late game will be honored Tuesday.
