District 62 Tournament of Champions

6/11/11 MAJORS DIVISION:  OVLL Dodgers 9 vs. Westminster Padres 5

Aside from a slow start, some opening game jitters and a wild 6th inning, the boys played great and pretty much dominated the Westminster Padres.  Jack Furry was solid on the mound and gave up 1 hit while striking out 5 on 38 pitches over the first 3 innings.  Hagen Danner pitched the next two and walked 1 while striking out 6 on 34 pitches.  At the plate, we hit the ball hard in the top of the first but went down 1-2-3.  Fortunately, things started clicking in the second and Jake Haffner led off the inning with a monster homerun.  Nick Welch and Noah Willis followed with back to back singles and worked their way around the bases to both eventually score on wild pitches.  Ethan Iles worked a 1-out walk and then with two outs, Brandon Nicholson, Hagen, and Jack banged back-to-back-to-back singles.  Ethan scored on Jack's hit but unfortunately Hagen was thrown out trying to take 3rd before Brandon could score.  Noah singled in the 4th but we didn't get anything going again until the 5th when Dylan Chennault started us off with a 1-out single and then scored on a wild pitch when Hagen was up.  Hagen ended up walking and then Jack smacked an opposite field homerun to put us up 7-0.  In the 5th, Nick led off with a single, moved to second when Noah reached on an error and scored on a sac fly by Kyle Stubbs.  Hagen added to the fun in the top of the 6th with a 2-out opposite field solo homerun to put us up 9-0.  They came back a bit in the top of the 6th when Nick had some trouble locating his pitches but Brandon came in to record the final 2-outs and strand a runner on third.  Great team effort.

Daniel Lewis

Starting pitcher Cole Kaplan struck out 8 batters and Thomas Williams broke open a close game with a two-run double in the fourth inning to spark the Rockhounds to a first-round victory in the Minor B District 62 Tournament of Champions on Monday at Robinwood Little League.
Kaplan allowed only one hit in 2-2/3 innings with each of his outs coming via strikeouts.
The Rockhounds, Ocean View’s postseason tournament champion, erupted for five runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Williams’ double to the gap in right-center field. Chance DiMarco followed with a sharp single to left to bring in two more runs. Kaplan lined a single to center field and Shane Hoodman capped the outburst with a run-scoring single to increase the Rockhounds’ lead to 8-2.
DiMarco, Williams and Hoodman provided 3-1/3 innings of solid relief.
Rockhounds catcher Eric Church contributed a double and made the game’s pivotal defensive play in the sixth by fielding a carom on a wild pitch and hustling back to tag out an Angels’ runner trying to score.
Nick Chumacero reached base three times, while David Drigla and Tyler La Force each got on base twice for the Rockhounds (16-4-1 overall). Reilly Kells, Lisa Tobin and Kaleb Plewa provided spirited at-bats as well for the Rockhounds.
