FALL 04-AMERICANS WIN 18AA ALL STAR GAME 10-7

The American All Stars built up a 10-3 lead, then withstood a four run ninth inning rally by the Nationals to score a 10-7 victory in the Fall league’s 18AA All Star game December 21 at the Lantana Sports Complex. The American squad, consisting of players from Arrigo Dodge Los Potros, the Yankees, Phillies, Cubs and Juno Beach Sidewinders took a 5-0 lead through the first four innings. Los Potros’ Abner Elias threw three scoreless innings and Rick Mullan (Yankees) added one more scoreless frame. Meanwhile, the Americans tallied twice in both the second and third innings and added one more in the fourth. In the second, Joey Santeramo (Cubs) walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Elias’ roller resulted in an error. Danny Moya (Phillies) doubled home Elias to make it 2-0. In the third, Ian Harris (Phillies) and Troy Sorrells (Yankees) both singled. After Harris was caught stealing third, Sorrells moved to second on the play and scored on successive wild pitches by Nationals’ starter Ruben Cuevas. Andrew Fariello (Yankees) doubled, went to third when Chuck Denehy reached on a fielder’s choice and infield error. Fariello was picked off third on a fine throw by catcher Steve Prince (Seminoles). Denehy , though, stole second and third and scored when the Yankees’ Tony Rodriguez’ long fly ball to left resulted in another error. The Americans increased their lead to 5-0, scoring an unearned run off Chad Mainville (Duffy’s Dodgers). Steve Grove (Los Potros) singled, moved up on a double by Brian Vail (Cubs), and scored an error. The Nationals, made up of players from the Seminoles, Duffy’s Dodgers, Metric Engineering Cubans, Marlins and Rooney’s Heat, finally cracked through in the fifth. Ramon Serpa (Metric) singled, stole second, moved to third on an error, and scored on a foul ball sacrifice fly to right field hit by Steve Prince. Carlo Dominguez, who had walked and stolen second, came in to score on a sharp single up the middle by his Seminoles’ teammate, Joe Prince. John Aquino (Los Potros) was hit by a pitch, went to third on a wild pickoff attempt, and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. The Americans added two more in the sixth, making it 8-2. An error, single by Sorrells, another wild pitch and an infield roller by Rodriguez accounted for the runs. The Nationals cut it to 8-3 in the 7th. Scott Cobb (Marlins) and Joe Stone (Seminoles) singled, and Cobb came in to score on an infield error. The Americans scored two more without a hit in the bottom of the 8th on two walks, a pair of wild pitches, and a wild pickoff attempt. The Nationals squad closed the gap with four unearned runs in the ninth on only one hit, a single by Kevin Rubel (Duffy’s Dodgers). Two walks, a hit batsmen, a wild pitch and two infield errors got the Nationals within four, but Sorrells retired Cobb and Stone to end the game. Elias, with three scoreless innings to start the game and some good defensive work behind the plate, earned Most Valuable Player honors and was presented with an NABA All Star plaque. He was followed to the mound by by Mullan, Harris and Sorrells. The Twins won their first ever league championship, defeating the Bru's Room Rockets 3 to 2 in a fantastic 14-inning 18AAA title game at Santaluces on Sunday, October 10. The championship had been delayed from August 29 because of rain storms and eventually hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. The two teams battled through thirteen innings tied at one apiece until the Twins broke through for a pair, without a hit in the top of the 14th inning. Diego Santos and Emilio Vargas both drew walks and scored on Rockets' errors to take a 3-1 lead. The two unearned runs scored off Jackson Munoz, who relieved Mike Draper who pitched brilliantly for 13 innings, giving up only one run and three hits. The Rockets cut it to 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourteenth on singles by Billy Brescia and Nestor Sanjurjo, and after the Twins turned a 4-3 double play, Brescia scoring on the play, Pete Fuster registered the final out to seal the deal. Fuster saved it for Pat Ferguson who pitched five relief innings for the victory. Jose Acuna was the starter, but did not get a decision. Nestor Sanjurjo, who relieved Draper in the 14th, was nicked for the loss. After 6 1/2 scoreless innings, the Rockets scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the 7th. Brian Fitzsimmons led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rob Wiley, took third on a single by Munoz and scored on a wild pitch. The Twins tied it with a run in the 8th. Ricky Dominguez led off with a bunt single, stole second, moved to third on an infield out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Diego Santos. Santos was chosen as the championship game MVP, and will receive the Bob Swets Memorial MVP award, personally inscribed, and delivered at a later date. The Sharpie Cardinals won the Spring league's 18AA championship Sunday, August 29 at the Lantana Sports Complex, rallying from a 7-0 deficit to beat the Dobson Roofing Hurricanes 13-9. The Hurricanes, who earned the finals with an 11-4 semifinal win earlier Sunday over the Yankees, looked like they would cop the title game easily racing off to a 7-0 start after only three innings. Craig Spatara doubled home a run in the first inning, then Gregg Perrin hit a grand slam in the second off Cardinals' starter Louis Ortiz. Spatara then blasted a two-run shot off Ortiz for a 7-0 lead. After the next batter, Felix Martinez, singled, Cardinals' skipper Steve Ausdenmoore brought in lefthander Vinny Casella and he stopped the Hurricanes cold. That give the Cardinals time to get their offense going. After Hurricanes starter Joe Hager held the Cards scoreless through the first three innings, the Cardinals exploded for two in the fourth, five more in the fifth to tie, and five more in the sixth to take a commanding 12-7 lead. They added one more iun the 8th. The Hurricanes, held scoreless for 6 and 2/3 innings by Casella, finally cracked through for two more runs in the 9th, but it was too late, too late. August 29th was a busy day for the 18AAA league at the Santaluces Complex. First, the sixth seeded Orioles finished off the #3 Indians by completing a suspended game with an 8-2 victory. The game had been halted by rain the previous Sunday and resumed in the bottom of the sixth inning with the O's leading 7-1. And, fourth seeded Los Tigres completed their suspended game against the number five seeded Boynton Red Sox, winning 7-2 after resuming play in the bottom of the fifth with a 5-1 lead. That put the Orioles into one semifinal against the second-seeded Pacino Twins, and the Twins won it easily 8-0. Los Tigres earned their other semifinal against the top seeded Bru's Room Rockets, with former New York Met pitcher Mike Draper pitching the Rockets to a 4-2 victory.

FALL 03---LOS TIGRES WINS 18AAA CHAMPIONSHIP AS LEAGUE'S FIRST UNBEATEN TEAM CINDERELLA EXPOS CAPTURE 18AA CROWN Los Tigres rewrote the record book on Sunday, defeating the Home Run Sports Rockets 12-5 at the Lantana Sports Complex in the Fall 2003 league's championship game. In winning their fifth league title, Los Tigres also became the first team in the 12-year, 24 season history of the NABA Palm Beach league to go undefeated through the regular season, playoffs and championship games. All told, Los Tigres went 16-0. They won the regular season title with a perfect 14-0 mark, defeated the Red Sox 10-5 in the semifinals before adding the Rockets to their list of victims. Juan Perez had three hits, scored four runs and drove in one for Los Tigres, but Jhovany William earned MVP honors by driving in four runs on a two run double and a two run home run. CJ Huffman went five innings to earn the victory. For the Rockets, Mike Draper drove in a pair of runs with a double and a single. EXPOS WIN 18AA TITLE AS NUMBER FOUR SEED The Expos, who just managed to finish over .500 during the regular season, are the Cinderella team of the 18AA league, beating the third seeded Marlins 8-2 in the championship game Sunday at the Santaluces Complex. After knocking off the top seeded, regular season champion Dobson Roofing Hurricanes 10-5 in the semifinals, the Expos rode the pitching of Danny Moya and Roberto Laboy to an 8-2 victory over the Marlins. The Marlins also pulled an upset in the semifinals, ousting the second seeded Boynton Red Sox 10-5. JJ Medina was the top offensive player for the Expos in the title game with a double, single and sacrifice fly to drive in three runs. Jeff Schector also had a double and single for the Expos who jumped into a 3-1 lead after an inning and never looked back. Moya was chosen as the game's Most Valuable Player, going six innings and scattering eight hits and yielding only two runs. Laboy pitched the final three shutout innings, allowing only three harmless singles. The 18AA title is the second for the upstart Expos, who won the fall league title in 2000. Los Tigres trailed 6-4 going to the top of the ninth inning, but rallied for six runs to beat the Orioles 10-6. Orioles' pitching woes opened the door for the Tigres, who drew three walks and a hit batsman off Orioles' closer Brad Hoffer, but a two run single by Pedro Liriano, a two run triple by Francis Dinzey and an RBI double by Amado Dinzey spiced up the six run inning. Liriano, who had four hits, was chosen as the game's Most Valuable Player. Amado had a solo homer and a a single to go with his ninth inning two bagger. Orlando Araujo also homered for Los Tigres. Reliever Ramon Linares (4 1/3 IP) got credit for the win. Stefan Clark led the Orioles with four hits in five trips, plus a walk. Bobby Knapp had a two run double, Jim McDonough a two run triple and Joe McKenna a solo homer and a double. The loss went to Hoffer, the third of four Orioles' pitchers. He was charged with four runs in only 1/3 of an inning even though he did not give up a hit. The Orioles had gone into the post season as the top seed, winning the American Division, then beating the Mets and Twins in the playoffs. Los Tigres was seeded second after winning the National Division, downing Glory Days and the six time champion Indians in the playoffs. The 18AA game was a thriller that was decided in the eleventh inning when Jim Bergman cracked a long single to score MVP Noel Vasquez from third base as the Hurricanes nipped the Marlins 12-11. Vasquez led off the inning with his fifth hit of the game, moved to second on a bunt, went to third on a single to short right by Lezcano and walked home on Bergman's long base hit to left center. There were many twists and turns in this one. The Marlins held early 4-0 and 5-1 leads. Arnie Torres homered for the Hurricanes to make it 5-3. Then the 'Canes scored eight runs in the 7th inning helped out by four Marlins' errors. The Marlins fought back with six in the 8th to tie it at 11 apiece. Key blows were RBI singles by Fernando Miranda and Jeff Schector, a two run double by Tom Amenita, a sac.fly by Pete David and a game tying solo blast by Eric Davis. The Marlins left the bases loaded in the tenth inning when veteran Jose Pena, who went all eleven, got two outs to end the threat. The Hurricanes had wasted an opportunity in regulation when they also left the bases loaded, but reliever Chipper Stout got out of that jam. Stout, though, took the loss when the Hurricanes staged their winning rally in the eleventh. The championship is the Hurricanes' first since joining the NABA Palm Beach League.
