One goal games becoming habit?
Next: Steel Valley Cup!
Last summer Canfield head coach Randy Emery approached the Ursuline/Mooney hockey board with an idea to promote both the Canfield Cardinals and Ursuline/Mooney Thunder hockey programs. Both programs are the only two high school hockey programs in the Mahoning Valley. The organizations would work together in which both developmental teams and varsity teams would compete for a traveling trophy. Hence the upcoming "Steel Valley Cup" game. Dave Kuffel sales manager for WBBW AM 1240 was contacted about putting the game on the radio, and each program would benefit by getting sponsors for the game. Paul Teeple, voice of the Mahoning Valley Phantoms, agreed to announce the game, a first for area high school hockey. U/M hockey board president Dr. Ray Boniface has commissioned New Breed Fabrication (Owner-Jerry Morell) to design and build the trophy's for the annual game. The games will take place Monday night January 19, at the Ice Zone in Boardman, with the developmental teams playing at 6:30p.m. and the varsity at 7:45p.m. Adult admission is $5, Students $3, under 12 and senior citizens free. Both games promise to be competitive, but most importantly the organizations have been working together for a common purpose, the good of high school hockey in the Mahoning Valley and the love of the game.
