The Swift Current Innovation Credit Union U18 AAA Female Wildcats were able to knocked off the league-leading Regina Rebels in overtime tonight in the Queen City.

Wildcats forward Sadie Keller provided the game-winner in the second overtime to lift a shorthanded Swift Current squad to a 3-2 win.

The first period was fairly even shots-wise with the Rebels holding a slight 9-7 advantage but neither team managed to find the scoresheet.

Lafleche’s Jerzey Watteyne continued her impressive start to the season just 1:20 into the second period putting Swift Current up 1-0 with an assist going to Laiken Swan.

Around five minutes later the Rebels would solve Wildcats netminder Karlee Lehner tying the game at 1-1.

The Rebels would jump out to a 2-1 lead moments after the five-minute mark of the third period.

Swift Current defenceman Shelby Rublee would erase the one-goal deficit approximately four minutes later knotting the game at 2-2.

After both teams failed to score a winner in the first overtime, Wildcats Keller would end it with 1:44 left in the second overtime session with Jessica Bouffard and Samantha Thompson drawing assists.

Lehner continued her perfect record between the pipes for Swift Current moving to 4-0 on the year with a 33 save performance.

With the win the Wildcats are now 5-2 on the season, tied for second in the Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League.

The pair of clubs will rematch in Swift Current next Wednesday night at Fairview West Arena.

Captain Ava Metzger, forward Kiana McNinch, defenceman Caitlyn Perlinger, goalie Aurora Van Wormer were all unavailable for Swift Current in the game.

All four players are in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba this week representing Team Saskatchewan at the Western Regional Women’s U18 Championship that began today.

The Swift Current Innovation Credit Union U18 AAA Female Wildcats are the last undefeated team remaining in the Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League after Wednesday night.

Wildcats captain Ava Metzger’s overtime winner extinguished the Regina Rebels bid for a six-game win streak to begin the season while extending Swift Current’s to three in a row.

The contest didn’t start as planned for Swift Current as the Rebels pounced out to a 1-0 lead just 1:49 into the game.

Swift Current forward Jerzey Watteyne continued her impressive start to the season with just over a trio of minutes left in the first frame scoring her fourth of the season tying the game up.

A similar script to the first period ensued in the second, as the Rebels regained the lead at the 5:22 mark.

The Wildcats would respond quicker this time, around four minutes later as Gull Lake’s Sadie Keller netted her first on the campaign via the powerplay knotting the game at 2-2.

Wildcats rookie Addison Eurich would give them the lead just over five minutes into the third period but Swift Current couldn’t hang on as they allowed a tying goal with around three minutes left in regulation.

That set the stage for Metzger to play hero for Swift Current in the extra frame moving their record to 3-0 on the season.

Swift Current’s goalie Karlee Lehner stopped 30 of 33 shots in her second career win in as many outings.

Next up for the Wildcats is a weekend visit from the 0-4 Prince Albert Bears on Saturday and Sunday.
