The Nationals won tonights battle of undefeated teams with a 5-2 victory.  The Nationals score a run in the first, two in the fourth and two in the fifth on seven total hits while also reaching base on three costly Royal errors.

The Royals were lead at the plate tonight by Markey Howlett who had two hits while scoring one of the Royals two runs.  Zach Milligan (hit and walk with a run scored), Max Baker (single), and Ethan Richter (single) also connected for hits tonight.  Sam Houle and Stephen Davis each had an RBI in the Royals fourth inning driving in Zach and Markey, respectively.

Zach pitched a complete game striking out eight without walking a National.  Ned Darden had an outstanding defensive night making three outstanding plays in the middle infield retiring National batters.  Markey caught a fantastic game behind the plate keeping the Nats at bay from running the bases .

The Royals return to action on Friday at 6pm versus the Yankees on Field 4.

Royals Come from Behind--Win 11-8

Posted by Mike Milligan at Apr 24, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

A long day at the park came to an end when the Royals scored seven runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to take end the scoring for the day and pull out an 11-8 victory over the Tigers.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth and Hayden Gerloff on first base, Zach Milligan was hit by pitch followed by a walk to Sam Houle to load the bases.   Brett Schulwolf lined a ball to the shortstop that was mishandled at second base leading to a score.  Steven Davis then lined a double to the leftfield fence to clear the bases evening the game at 8.  Ethan Richter was hit by a pitch to put two runners on.  Markey Howlett lined a ball up the middle to score both runners.  Markey scored to close the scoring in the fifth.

Zach pitched the final two innings relieving Ethan and Ryan Ludvik.  Zach allowed no runs while striking out one and allowing two runners only.

At the plate, the team was lead by Sam Houle (2 hits and a walk), Zach (a single, walk and HBP), Stephen Davis (double, two walks and three RBIs), Markey Howlett (double and walk, three RBIs), Max Baker (single) and Sam Beasley (single).  All of the Royals reached base on this hot day or put the ball in play.  What a great offensive day where we see hardwork at home and at practice paying off.

Defensively, the Royals committed one error, but again remained solid on defense.  We are continuing to work on the finer points of defense in practice, but today all of our players played two or three positions as we head toward mid-season where we will begin concentrating on one or two positions to master for each player.

The Royals return to action Tuesday night versus the Nationals.  Go Royals!

Royals Return from Break with Win

Posted by Mike Milligan at Apr 20, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Royals came back from Spring Break showing a little rust, but still coming out with an 11-5 win tonight at Fleet Park.  The bats of the Royals were hot as we continued to put the ball in play.  Sam Houle lead the charge with two big hits driving in three runs.  Also contributing solid hits for the team were Zach Milligan, Brett Schulwolf, Stephen Davis, Ethan Richter and Max Baker.  All thirteen Royals reached base tonight, but the team also gave up four outs on the bases because of their aggressive base running including being thrown out at home three different times.

In the field, we played solid defense committing only one error.  Our players moved around from position to position as we are giving our kids the opportunity to play a few different positions.  We will be continuing that over the next few games as we are coaching our players to learn a couple of positions. We did turn a fourth inning double play.

Our pitching was excellent tonight as we threw strikes when needed to get out of jams.  The Mets hit the ball well.  Markey Howlett pitched the first two innings.  Stephen Davis pitched the third, fourth and fifth inning, with Ethan Richter finishing the game in the sixth.

We return to action on Saturday against the Tigers at 11:30am.  Go Royals.
