EFA Boys Fall to Hot Ithaca Squad

High school soccer: Ithaca boys cruise to 5th straight win

Ithaca High went on a three-goal scoring outburst in the first half, and that was more than enough to give the Little Red boys soccer team a 3-0 victory over visiting Elmira Free Academy on Monday night at Moresco Stadium.

Andre Keating delivered the game-winner in the fourth minute on his first varsity goal, as the Little Red improved to 6-1. Ithaca has won five straight games.

Andrew Troisi and Anwar Omar also scored, and goalie Sam Cherney made eight saves to notch the shutout.

* Vestal 2, Elmira Free Academy 0: Geno Rocco's goal helped lead Vestal to a road victory.

Vestal (5-1-1) also scored a goal off of an EFA player. Logan Talvey registered the shutout with four saves. Vestal outshot the Blue Devils 9-4

Satchel Waters made seven saves for EFA (4-4).

Mistakes Push Patriots Past EFA

*Binghamton 2, EFA 1: The final goal of the contest came 33 seconds before halftime, when the Patriots' Micah Martin headed home Dennis Hyde's corner kick.

Omar Avila scored the first goal off Martin's assist for Binghamton, which overcame the guests' 13-7 advantage in shots.

College notebook: Elmira, Corning players help Alfred offense go

* Elmira Free Academy graduates Cory Hill and Frankie Mannino are contributing to Alfred's men's soccer team.

Mannino leads the Saxons (4-2-2) with three goals and was named Most Valuable Player for leading his team to the Owego State Tournament championship. Mannino scored both goals as Alfred defeated Oswego 2-1 in the title game Sept. 4.

* Two EFA grads and one Horseheads grad play for the Keuka men's soccer team.

Former Blue Devil Carl Learned has one goal and one assist in five games for the Storm (3-1-1). Fellow EFA grad Ryan Bordinger has started all five games in the backfield.

Midfielder Kyle Rivera, a Horseheads grad, has started three of the four games he's appeared in.

 

Boys soccer: Athens edges Elmira Free Academy, 3-2

Brooks Johnson's two goals led the Athens boys soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Elmira Free Academy in a non-league game Monday at EFA.

Justin Morris also scored for Athens. Sophomore Sam Vergason assisted on all three goals. Athens outshot the Blue Devils 10-8.

Alex Varkatzas scored both Elmira goals, one in each half. Parker Warrick had one assist.

Athens goalie T.J Glisson made six saves. Elmira's Satchel Waters had seven saves.

Wildcats edge EFA

Athens used a team effort to top EFA 3-2 in non-league boys' soccer action Monday.

"For us it was a great game," Athens coach Jake Lezak said. "We played the way we wanted to. It was a great test for us at this point in the season. I'm very impressed with how our team performed."

Alex Varkatvas put EFA up early, but Athens' Justin Morris, off an Eric Bull pass, scored at the 25:09 mark to tie it up. Two minutes later the Wildcats went up as Brooks Johnson scored off a Sam Vergason assist.

In the second half Vergason scored unassisted at the 28:54 mark to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.

EFA cut the lead to one as Varkatvas put one in again, but they couldn't find the equalizer.

In junior varsity action Athens won 3-1 as Marshall LeBlanc scored twice and Dillon Mayo once. Gavin Glisson, Justin Mayo and Zack Mikiya each had assists.

Athens will host Mansfield at 5:30 p.m. today.
