EFA's Season Ends With 1 Tick Left

Powerful Byram Hills advances in boys soccer

Staff report • November 9, 2010, 9:45 pm

PURCHASE -- An unlucky last-second bounce ended the Elmira Free Academy boys soccer team's season with a 1-0 loss Tuesday night in a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A regional game at SUNY Purchase.

Perennial state powerhouse Byram Hills, from Section 1, scored the game's only goal with one second remaining after the ball bounced off the head of an EFA player who was trying to clear the play, then trickled into the net.

"You couldn't write a script for it. It's unbelievable," EFA head coach Derek Hamilton said.

"The referee came over to the time table and said there was one second left. We kicked the ball in and it was over."

The loss ended the season for the Section 4 champion Blue Devils (11-7-1). Byram Hills (16-2-3), which has a 97-8-8 record, four sectional titles and a state championship over the last five seasons, advances to face Section 9 champion Goshen in a state quarterfinal game Friday or Saturday.

Byram Hills is ranked sixth in the state in Class A by the New York State Sports Writers Association. EFA is ranked 13th.

"We were chasing the match for much of the game," Hamilton said. "Byram was one of the best Class A teams I've ever seen. Tactically we employed a game plan that worked to perfection. The kids played fantastic. I couldn't be more proud of them. It was just unlucky circumstances that led to their goal."

The fact that Byram Hills' only score came on an EFA own goal said much about the defensive effort of the Blue Devils, who limited the Bobcats to six legitimate shots on goal, all of which were denied by Academy goalie Luke Ford.

"We're one of the only high school teams I know of to play strictly zonal," Hamilton said. "The kids covered each other's backs all game with secondary defense and it worked like magic today."

Academy was limited to two shots on goal. The Devils' best opportunity came after Kail Burfield's feed to Alex Varkatzas led to a breakaway that was stopped by the Bobcats' goalkeeper.

Early in the game, EFA lost junior Dakota Yerkes to a chest injury after he collided with a Byram Hills player on a 50-50 ball.

Yerkes, who scored the winning goal in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Johnson City in the Section 4 Class A final, was taken to a hospital in White Plains for treatment.

Saturday's victory gave EFA its second sectional championship in five seasons and only the third in team history. The Blue Devils fought back for the title after starting the season 4-6.

"We had lost five in a row at one point. I said to the kids, 'We're this close to turning it around,' " Hamilton said. "They kind of put it together and took off as a team there. Alex was scoring all the goals, but it was a complete team effort every single match."

Blue Devils win boys Class A soccer title

By Andrew Legare •alegare@gannett.com • November 6, 2010, 9:20 pm

ONEONTA -- Elmira Free Academy found itself facing a one-goal halftime deficit after Johnson City scored with four seconds remaining in the first half.

But this season has been one big comeback for the Blue Devils, who went out and put up two goals in a dominant second half to secure a 2-1 victory in the Section 4 Class A championship game at the Wright National Soccer Complex on a chilly Saturday afternoon.

Dan Earley scored the tying goal off a rebound on a corner kick with 33 minutes, 30 seconds left. Dakota Yerkes then headed in the winner off a free kick with 9:07 left. Nick Lian assisted on both goals.

The victory gave the top-seeded Blue Devils (11-6-1) their first sectional championship since 2006 and earned them a berth in a state regional game at 5 p.m. Tuesday at SUNY Purchase against Section 1 champion Byram Hills.

Not bad for a team that was once 4-6 this season.

"The important part of the season is the second half," EFA head coach Derek Hamilton said. "If somebody was to tell me that you were going to start off 4-6 and win a sectional championship, I'll trade that every single year."

Johnson City, the No. 2 seed, ended up with a 9-4-3 record.

"I'm proud of my guys. We did well to get here and we gave it our best," Wildcats head coach Hristos Dimitriou said. "We had a chance, we were leading. Unfortunately, we couldn't avoid the two set-play goals."

Johnson City went into halftime riding a big wave of momentum after Jeremy West beat Academy goalie Luke Ford to a 50-50 ball and slipped the shot into the net. It was somewhat of a fluky goal, though perhaps it was an appropriate conclusion to the half.

"Those first 40 minutes, I thought Johnson City kind of took it to us. We really didn't play our game," Hamilton said. "We were a little hesitant. I don't know what the reasoning was, but we kind of put it together in the second half after switching some things tactically at the break."

Academy had a huge edge in possession time during a physical, sometimes testy second half. Academy was rewarded when Earley booted in a shot just in front of the net following a rebound off a corner kick off the foot of Kail Burfield.

It remained a 1-1 game for the next 24 minutes, with the action including far more fouls than shots, including yellow cards on each team.

"I thought it was a well-played game by both teams," Dimitriou said. "It was very physical, which took a little bit away from the quality of play. They do have a very physical team."

A breakthrough for offensive purists among the crowd finally came with 9:07 remaining, when Lian sent a free kick toward Yerkes that ended up in the back of the net.

"I pointed to Nick earlier and I told him I was at the far post," Yerkes said.

"It came right to my head. Actually, it popped out of the goalie's hands and I saw the net wide open and I just tried to bang it home."

The Wildcats were unable to come up with any real scoring chances in the second half and finished with five shots, with the only one on target the goal by West. Hamilton said much of that had to do with the presence of two players in particular on the back end.

"Nick Lian and Kevin Kucharski have been two of the best defenders, not only on our team, but in the entire conference as well," Hamilton said. "We just kind of lean on those two players. I can't recall a ball in the entire second half that either of them lost. They're on another level."

EFA Scoring - Earley (1-0), Yerkes (1-0), Lian (0-2)
Johnson City Scoring - West (1-0)
Shots on Goal/Corners - EFA (7-3), Johnson City (1-0)
Saves - EFA (Ford - 0), Johnson City (Vitale - 5)

Two boys teams and two girls teams from the Elmira area will play for Section 4 soccer championships this weekend.

Friday night, the Horseheads girls meet Vestal for the Class AA title at 7:30 p.m. at Binghamton Alumni Stadium.

Three more games follow Saturday, including two boys games at the Wright National Soccer Complex in Oneonta.

Elmira Notre Dame faces South Kortright at 1 p.m. for the Class D boys crown, and Elmira Free Academy meets Johnson City at 2:30 in Class A.

Also, the Notre Dame girls play for the Class C title at 2 p.m. Saturday at Binghamton Alumni Stadium.

Class AA girls

Top-seeded Vestal (13-2-1) and second-seeded Horseheads (10-4) played a close match in their only regular-season meeting, with Vestal coming out on top, 3-2, on the road.

The Golden Bears are ranked seventh in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association and advanced to the final with a 3-1 victory against Corning behind two goals from Liz Howell.

Southern Tier Athletic Conference West champion Horseheads went to overtime to beat defending Section 4 champion Union-Endicott in the semifinals, 1-0.

Class A boys

Top-seeded Elmira Free Academy (10-6-1) is making its third appearance in a sectional final in five seasons. The Blue Devils won in 2006, then lost to Owego Free Academy in 2007.

"I think first and foremost, I'm just proud of the kids, that they can play at the level they've played at for the last five years," EFA head coach Derek Hamilton said. "It's a testament to the commitment the kids have put in year in and year out, not just this season."

Academy comes in hot, with a 6-0-1 record over its last seven games. The streak coincided with the return of goalie Luke Ford, who suffered a broken leg in the preseason.

"We're playing our best soccer right now," Hamilton said. "Our confidence is as high as it has been all season, deservedly so with the way the 25 kids have kind of put it together."

EFA is ranked 17th in the state in Class A, three spots ahead of second-seeded Johnson City (9-3-3).

The top seed Vestal boys' soccer team will look across the field Saturday and see some familiar faces. The Golden Bears will be facing second-seeded Ithaca (10-3) in the Section 4 Class AA Championship game for the fourth straight year. Game time is 1:30 p.m. at the National Hall of Fame in Oneonta.

Vestal is 15-1-1 this season, including two 2-1 victories over its Metro Division rival. The Golden Bears are in search of their first state tournament berth since winning the state championship in 2007. Vestal has been a mainstay in the Class AA championship game, making its sixth straight appearance. The Golden Bears are currently ranked seventh in the state at the Class AA level.

Vestal is led by a high-powered offense in which six players have scored at least six goals, led by Nate Economou with 12. Robbie Hoover and Jaisen Clark each have nine tallies, with two of Clark's coming against Corning in a 4-0 semifinal victory.

"I like the way we're playing the game, moving the ball and making decisions at both ends of the field," said Vestal coach Jim Murphy. "In this game, it will come down to who can sustain their style of play for the whole game."

Vestal will have to stop striker Andrew Troisi, who has 13 goals, including two in Ithaca's 3-2 semifinal win over Horseheads. However, Murphy says his team does not focus on just the other team's top scorer.

"While stopping Andrew Troisi and Anwar Omar will be our main focus, we have a great team defense," Murphy said.

Ithaca has bested Vestal two years running in the Class AA championship game. The Little Red won 1-0 on a Troisi goal last year and prevailed in a penalty kick shootout in 2008 to claim the state tournament berth. The teams were declared class co-champions after a regulation tie. Vestal won 2-0 in 2007.

"Playing with a sense of urgency and determination throughout the whole match will be a deciding factor," Murphy said. "We have to be at least as hungry as Ithaca is and hopefully hungrier."

Oneonta will be a hotbed for Southern Tier soccer on Saturday, with the Hall of Fame hosting six championship games.

CLASS A

Second seed Johnson City looks to continue its recent success over Elmira Free Academy when the teams square off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday for the Class A championship.

While Johnson City (9-3-3) did not face EFA (10-6-1) this season, the Wildcats defeated the Blue Devils 3-0 in the Class A semifinals in 2009. Johnson City fell to Maine-Endwell 3-0 in last year's Class A Championship. Johnson City also defeated EFA two straight years in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference semifinals, winning in 2008 in penalty kicks and winning 4-3 in 2007.

"From my experience, they are a very well coached team," said Johnson City coach Hristos Dimitriou. "They are going to be well organized, so we have to play our game and try to create chances."

The Wildcats boast a strong defense, which has created chances for striker Hans Purtell, who leads the team with 12 goals, including one in Johnson City's 2-1 win over Maine-Endwell in the Class A semifinal.

"Our team has been playing well defensively. We play well together and have great team chemistry," Dimitriou said. "If we continue to do those things, we are going to have a chance. We know they are always a good team and we have to play our best game to win."

Top seed EFA is appearing in its third sectional final in the last five years. It won the Class A title in 2006 and lost to Owego the following year. The Blue Devils have a 6-0-1 record in the last seven games.

EFA is currently ranked 17th in the state in Class A and Johnson City is 20th.

CLASS B

Top seed Oneonta is looking to win its second straight Class B championship when it faces second seed Trumansburg at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Oneonta (16-2) is ranked second in the state and is coming off an 8-1 rout of Susquehanna Valley in the semifinals.

Trumansburg (17-2) is making its first sectional championship game appearance since 1996, when it won its second straight title. The Blue Raiders, ranked 15th in the state, defeated Watkins Glen 1-0 in the semifinals.

CLASS C

Top seed Marathon and second seed Spencer-Van Etten are no strangers. They met in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference Small School Championship game on Oct. 23, with Marathon coming out on top with a Tyler Nelson goal late in overtime.

Marathon, 13-3-1 and ranked fifth in the state, defeated Seton Catholic Central 2-0 in Tuesday's semifinal. Spencer-Van Etten (12-4-1) defeated seventh seed Southern Cayuga 2-1 in overtime to reach the Championship game.

CLASS D

Top seed Elmira Notre Dame will be making its fourth overall appearance in a Section 4 Championship game. The last sectional title for the Crusaders came in 1986, when they were in Class C.

Elmira Notre Dame is 13-3-2 and is ranked fifth in New York. The Crusaders are coming off a 2-1 double-overtime win over Margaretville on Tuesday.

Third seed South Kortright is 17-0-1 and is ranked ninth in the state. The Rams defeated Cherry Valley-Springfield 2-1 in the semifinals.

Coach Hamilton's beard still intact

By Ron Levanduski •rlevandu@gannett.com • October 29, 2010, 9:55 pm

ELMIRA -- Derek Hamilton's beard is still growing and that means the Elmira Free Academy boys soccer team he coaches is still winning.

The Blue Devils scored three goals in the first eight minutes -- two by sophomore Alex Varkatzas -- to defeat Owego 3-0 in a Section 4 Class A semifinal game on Friday.

"The first eight minutes we set the pace and then didn't concede," Varkatzas said.

Elmira goalie Luke Ford also made two huge saves to keep Owego (9-7) from gaining any momentum.

EFA (8-6-1) will meet Johnson City for the Section 4 Class A championship on Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta.

It's the third sectional final for EFA in five years. EFA won the title in 2006, beating Owego. In 2007, EFA lost the final to Owego.

"Owego is a class program," Hamilton said. "We knew it was going to be difficult going in."

With some aggressive play out of the box, Elmira made it look easy early on and had a 3-0 lead seven minutes and 20 seconds into the first half.

"We wanted to set the tone early, so we put a physical staple in the game," Hamilton said.

The aggressive tactic, however, led to two Elmira starters receiving yellow cards. That included Justin Munson, who scored the first goal in just under five minutes after stealing the ball from in front of the net. Soon after, Munson received his yellow card.

Dan Earley, who assisted on the third goal, was yellow-carded in the second half. If they would have received a second card they would have been excluded from the title game. Hamilton, not wanting to risk that, chose to keep them out of the rest of the game.

"With the lead we had, I felt we could afford to sit him," Hamilton said.

Elmira got its season off to a slow start, winning just two of its first eight games-- all without Ford in goal. He was recovering from a broken left leg sustained in the preseason. When Ford returned, Elmira's fortunes improved and that's when Hamilton began growing a beard.

"I told the players I wouldn't shave it off until we lost," he said. "It looks ridiculous on me but it was something for the team to rally around."

Hamilton said the team's turnaround can also be credited to moving Munson from the right forward side to the center to team up with Varkatzas. Since making the moves, Elmira has gone 6-0-1 and is now ranked 20th in New York state in Class A.

"Me and Munson have been clicking ever since we made the change," Varkatzas said.

Varkatzas scored on a penalty kick with 34 minutes remaining in the first half to make it 2-0. A minute and 20 seconds later he struck again for his 22nd goal of the season from a throw in from Earley.

"His throw got through the defense and I was able to bend it around the keeper," Varkatzas said.

EFA had other chances to score but the remainder of the first half and much of the second half was largely controlled by Owego.

"We fell into a defensive shell and that is not our game," Hamilton said.

Owego's best first-half scoring chance was stuffed by Ford, who caught a header from close range by Owego's Tyler Sticker with 18 minutes remaining. Ford then made a spectacular diving, full-prone-in-air catch of a blast by Tim Glili 12 minutes into the second half.

"I saw the angle of it coming and I just dove for it," said Ford, who made eight saves in all for the shutout.

Each team had eight shots with EFA holding a 5-4 edge in corners.

Once in the lead, strong defensive play by EFA, including senior captain Nick Lian, helped keep Owego at bay.

"We were just looking to maintain our lead," Varkatzas said. "We played gritty the rest of the game."

EFA Scoring - Varkatzas (2-0), Munson (1-0), Earley (0-1)

Shots/Corners - EFA (8-5), Owego (9-4)

Saves - EFA (Ford - 8), Owego (Schneider - 4, Johnson - 0)
