2014-15 Season Preview

Posted by Mark Hubbuch at Sep 27, 2014 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The 2014-15 HS Bowling season is set to get underway, with opening day on Tuesday, September 30th.  Our first match is a District 12 contest at home vs. Beech.  Start time is 3:45pm at Smyrna Bowling Center.

Who will be the leaders of our teams this year?  The LadyCats look to remain strong in District 12 this year, with 6 returning players, led by Sr. Meghan Wofford and Jr. Rickie Denson.  Both of those ladies made the Individual State Tourney last year, and look to improve upon that effort.  And one of the 3 new additions is Fr. Megan Metz, who comes in with two years of experience on the West Wilson Middle team.  She should be a major contributor from the beginning.

On the Boys side, the loss of 4 starters cannot be overlooked...this will be a young and fairly inexperienced team.  Leading the way will be Seniors Jesse Denson & Walker Sawyers, both looking improved from last year; and Jr. Cody Fredericks, who is the top returning bowler from a year ago, when he averaged 189+ as a 10th grader.  Will we have a 200+ average boy this year?  Stay tuned to find out!

Good luck to our LadyCats & Wildcats as they start the new season!!

All of the WC bowlers were SO happy to be back home at Smyrna, and they showed it by bowling a lot of our best scores of the season!  Winning 21-6, the Wildcats REALLY showed it with their balanced attack on the way to a super 3911 series!  In a first for us in school history, each game saw a different bowler start off with the first 9 strikes in-a-row, and each of them ended the string by leaving a 4-pin on the 10th ball.  Crazy!!  Bryan Crigger (277) had it in game 1, Spencer Harp (278) in game 2, and Bobby Davidson (267) made it three in game 3.  Other super scores on the day:  Bobby with high series at 677; Eric Lane staying hot with a 259-661 total; Spencer ending with a 658 series; John Petty had a 657 (236); and Mike Murrell a 225.  GREAT day, Wildcats!

The LadyCats were also glad to be back, as they easily took the non-district match 24-3.  Brittany Sisco was especially glad to be here, as she finally hit her stride with a 635 series, on games of 212-201-222.  Nice bowling, B-ritt!  Elizabeth Callas had a 192, Nicole Bailey a 185-191, and Laurel Everett a 190.  And congrats to Fr. Meghan Wofford for her new high game of 179!  Great bowling, LadyCats!!

As has been the case for the previous two years, beating the Hardin County boys & girls in their own house is, well, nearly impossible.  This year was no exception, with our teams suffering their first loss of the 2011-12 season.  The boys fell 18-9, while the LadyCats went down 18.5-8.5.  For the boys, most of the damage was done in game 1, as the Tigers rolled a 1273 while we struggled to just a 1088, winning only 1 point.  Game 2 was much closer, thanks to Mike Murrell's 242 game!  But we still only won 2 points, losing 1255-1210.  Game 3 saw us hit a nice 1239 to their 1143, but our 6 points that game wasn't enough to win the match.  So. Kyle Hubbuch did his part by rolling a super 277 game & 695 series, with the 277 game ending up as high game of the tournament.  Nice bowling, Kyle!  Other good scores were:  Bryan Crigger with a 248-630; Spencer Harp a 225; & Bobby Davidson a 212.

The LadyCats were a little closer than the boys in game 1, falling 1024-967 and took 3 ind points.  But game 2 the Lady Tigers blew us away by 130 pins, winning 1136-1006 (this game ended up as our best of the day).  Game 3 was closer, but we still fell 948-910.  Elizabeth Callas had our high game with a 185, & Brittany Sisco rolled a 181.  On to the next match...
