Welcome to 2013!

Posted by Antone Balbo at Jun 28, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Hello Everyone, and welcome to the Millburn Summer Swim Team website for 2013! I'm a little behind schedule this year in getting the website updated, but Coach Kelly has been doing a phenomenal job of getting information out to everyone.

Please Remember: This website is managed by a Millburn Swim Parent, who is not affiliated in any way with the team (other than my kids being on the team). While I do my best to keep this site up-to-date, it is not the official word. If anything on this site conflicts with what you have heard from Coach Kelly or her staff, listen to them.

I'll be posting copies of the text from Kelly's emails here as a convenient archive, and I will do my best to get meet results posted promptly.

Thanks, and best wishes for a spectacular 2013 season!

Email from Coach Kelly - Maplewood Meet

Posted by Antone Balbo at Jun 28, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! We have a meet Monday MORNING in Maplewood. Warm up will start at 7:30am SHARP! Please get to the pool between 7:00am-7:15am so everyone has time to check in before they jump in the pool for warm up! The swim meet will begin at 8:30am. I put the directions on this email. Please make sure to give yourself enough time for the drive over to the pool. I will have a sign in sheet ready at the meet for your children to check off that they are there! If your plans have changed and you cannot make the meet, please email me ASAP.

On a side note, because the date of the Berkeley Heights meet has changed to Tuesday July 16th, I need an update on all swimmers availability ASAP! It was brought to my attention the Summit Seals tryouts are the same night and I want to make sure it will not conflict.

As with the many other programs Millburn Rec offers, this competitive swim team depends A LOT on the generous efforts made by it's VOLUNTEERS. It really does 'take a village'. Every dual meet requires volunteer participation from each team. We need timers, marshals, ribbon writers, announcers, scorers, runners, etc. There are many teams that mandate participation but we have yet to institute this due in large part by all who do volunteer. Volunteering has it's benefits. You get a bird's eye view of how everything is run and you can really 'get up close and personal'. We are always thankful and welcoming of any help you can provide. It's always easier with more hands on deck. Please don't wait til we have to start tracking individuals down in order to meet our needs.

Volunteers help as:

  • Timers: Time events with stopwatch and report to official for specified lane .
  • Marshals: Get swimmers lined-up and ready for events in appropriate lane.
  • Runners: Bring official’s result sheets to scoring table for each event.
  • Ribbon Writers: Fill-in swimmer/event information for Millburn event placers at scoring table.
  • Scorers: Scoring and tallying of event points for meet at scoring table.

It's not too late to volunteer. Anyone could volunteer to split a shift with an existing volunteer or any volunteer could recruit someone to split their shift. Anyone is encouraged to shadow/assist if unsure. We have a meet Tuesday night at Berkeley Heights. I will send out the information about that meet Monday, such as times and directions.

Email from Coach Kelly - 6/28/13

Posted by Antone Balbo at Jun 28, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

As we prepare for our first swim meet, I'd like to take this opportunity to review some swim meet procedures, especially if this will be a first (just some nice-to-knows). With so many swimmers and family&friends at the meets, it can get overwhelming the first time but afterwards hopefully it will become routine. We have moved up a division, so the teams we have dual meets with are all different than last year which also means all new town pools to set up at. So please be patient with logistics.

  1. Each meet will take approximately 2 hours to complete.
  2. It is requested that swimmers arrive 1 hour prior to the start time of each meet for sign-in and warm-up laps.
  3. Event sheets will be posted at each meet. Swimmers need to initial next to their names for each event they are scheduled for as confirmation. Failure to do so will result in either a scratch for that event or swimmer replacement. Note: The event sheets are prepared in advance with various copies distributed to officials so timeliness is of the essence.
  4. Meet event sheet listings are formatted as follows: see http://www.eteamz.com/millburnswim/news/index.cfm?cat=602515 In addition, North Jersey Summer Swim League (NJSSL) structure is as follows: see http://www.eteamz.com/millburnswim/news/index.cfm?cat=602514
  5. For dual meets, each team has a maximum of 3 entries per event for competition. Coaches try to accommodate for as many swimmers in as many events allowed, which is 3. They also strive to ensure our swimmers have fun whilst keeping in mind this program is a competitive swim team.
  6. For each dual meet, there are 6 lanes set up for the swim events. The lanes are designated as follows: Lanes 2, 4, 6 : home team swimmers Lanes 1, 3, 5 : away team swimmers (Note: For bonus heats, all lanes will be used by swimmers for that team's bonus heats)
  7. Swimmers should be lining up at their designated lane approximately 6 events in advance. Therefore, it is extremely important for swimmers and parents to be aware of event times. Announcers should be announcing each event as it is about to start. (If you hear your event being announced and you are not at the podium - then it is most likely too late and you have missed your race.)
  8. We try to have at least 2 marshals per lane to help get swimmers lined-up for their events. But as returning swimmers know and new swimmers will see that this is no small feat. Marshals cannot possibly be responsible for tracking every swimmer before their event. We cannot stress the importance of having swimmers hang around in our designated area. It's always advised to come prepared with some activities while swimmers wait for their event, i.e., cards, books, games, etc.
  9. As a team, we like to do a cheer at the start of each meet as well as a cheer for the home team at the end. 10. At the end of each meet, scores will be tallied and announced.

Additional Note: SWIMMERS MUST NOT HAVE ON ANY JEWELRY !! (This includes stud earrings or even a hairband on their wrist)

I believe this covers the basics. I will send another email tomorrow with specific directions and times for Mondays morning meet at Maplewood!

Millburn Swimmers Star At Divisional Meet!!!!

Posted by Antone Balbo at Jul 23, 2012 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Congratulations to the Millburn Swimmers on a fabulous showing at the Division 2 Championships on Monday! Millburn kids really strutted their stuff in picking up 29 top-three finishes in this very competitive division!

Millburn was led at the top by two triple winners: Ben Lin and Allen Zhu. Ben picked up titles in the Boys 13& Over 100 Meter IM (1:04.01), the Boys 15-19 50 Meter Freestyle (25.55), and the Boys 15-19 50 Meter Butterfly (27.15), while Allen emerged victorious in the Boys 9-10 25 Meter Freestyle (14.84), Boys 9-10 25 Meter Breaststroke (21.38), and Boys 9-10 25 Meter Butterfly (21.38).

And don’t think that the boys had all the fun. Kate Madrawski and Zoe Segal were both double winners, and picked up 2nd place in their third swims. Kate grabbed two individual blue ribbons in winning the Girls 9-10 25 Meter Freestyle (15.42) and  Girls 9-10 25 Meter Backstroke (18.75) and leading off the Girls 12 & Under  100 Meter Freestyle Relay on the way to their 2nd place finish (1:15.79). Zoe secured titles in the Girls 8 & Under 25 Meter Freestyle (18.31) and the Girls 8 & Under 25 Meter Breaststroke (25.77) and finished a close 2nd (only .16 behind the winner) in the Girls 8 & Under 25 Meter Backstroke (23.08).

Millburn’s final three first place efforts were turned in by a veteran, a rookie and a team effort.  Evie Schott won the first event of the day in out-swimming everyone in the Girls 12 & Under 100 Meter IM (1:22.69), before grabbing two second place ribbons in the Girls 11-12 50 Meter Freestyle (31.74) and Girls 11-12 50 Meter Breaststroke (41.13).

Eight year old Margaret Zhu snagged gold in the Girls 8 & Under 25 Meter Butterfly (22.71) and added a 2nd as part of Coed 8 & Under 100 Meter Freestyle Relay (1:33.75) along with Sebastian Tham, Jeffrey Ho and Megan Bowen.

The Boys 12 & Under 100 Meter Freestyle Relay team of Kyle Yih, Mark Madrawski, Justin Mon, Sterling Kinsale nearly bookended Schott’s victory by nabbing the title in the second to last event of the day (1.06.79), while the Girls 12 & Under 100 Meter Freestyle Relay team of Kate Madrawski, Amy Madrawski, Essie Pasternak, Sarah Yih hung on for a 2nd place finish (1:15.79).

In addition to Kyle Yih’s relay win, it was only teammate Allen Zhu that could keep Yih off the top step of the podium. Kyle finished 2nd in the Boys 9-10 25 Meter Freestyle (14.91) and Boys 9-10 25 Meter Butterfly (17.95) before his relay win.

Emily Segal was not content to have little sister Zoe have all the fun, and picked up three podium finishes of her own.  Emily nabbed 2nd in the Girls 9-10 25 Meter Freestyle (15.50), and 3rd in the Girls 9-10 25 Meter Backstroke (20.10) and Girls 9-10 25 Meter Breaststroke (22.51).

Jeffrey Ho also placed in multiple events, taking 2nd in the Boys 8 & Under 25 Meter Freestyle (20.39) and 3rd in the Boys 8 & Under 25 Meter Backstroke (27.12), and also swimming the second leg of the 2nd place Coed 8 & Under 100 Meter Freestyle Relay (1:06.79).

8-year old Maya Gurung finished behind only teammate Zoe Segal in taking 2nd place in the Girls 8 & Under 25 Meter Breaststroke (27.63) finishing almost 3 seconds ahead of the 3rd place swimmer.

Three Millburn boys representing the whole age span picked up individual 3rd place finishes. 7-year old Anirudh Khandrika placed 3rd in the  Boys 8 & Under 25 Meter Breaststroke (31.52), 12-year old Justin Mon was a convincing 3rd in the Boys 12 & Under 100 Meter IM (1:27.19) and 17-year old Jonas Singer finished just .06 out of second place in picking up 3rd in the Boys 15-19 50 Meter Backstroke (34.75).

Congratulations again on a terrific Millburn team and individual effort!!!
