Today, Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League president and chief administrative officer Jim McEachern received notice from the Sackville Chiefs that they will be unable to participate in the 2007 season.
Chiefs head coach Greg West informed McEachern his team had lost several key sponsors in the past couple of days, and that the team would not have the funding necessary to meet its financial obligations.
“Obviously, I’m disappointed we’ve lost one of our members,” said McEachern. “I can certainly appreciate the fact that Sackville did a great job of regrouping to join the league last season after taking a leave of absence in 2005, and with the nature of fundraising becoming tougher year after year, that Sackville had a very tough decision to make.”
“We still have five very strong teams in our league and will be able to provide a competitive and entertaining product for our fans, especially with our partnership with the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League for interleague play.”
All of Sackville’s games have been dropped from the 2007 schedule. The regular season will now consist of 29 games, with each NSSBL team playing six games against every other Nova Scotia opponent, plus five interleague games.
The regular season will now begin Tuesday, May 15, with the Halifax Pelham Canadians hosting the Kentville Wildcats at the Mainland Common at 7:30 p.m.
