38-STEVE CALABRESI
Coach Cal was with the Chiefs' organization for over 28 seasons until his untimely passing on April 25, 2017.

Was part of six championship teams in 1990, 1992, 1995, 1997, 2012 and 2014.

Served as the Chiefs' Bench Coach.

Woburn, MA- The Chiefs used outstanding efforts from a couple of former 2009 MLB draftees to edge Alibrandis 4-3 at Ferullo Field on Thursday night.

Mitchell Clegg, who was the 21st round pick of the Washington Nationals, handled most of the pitching, and Matt Nuzzo, who was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 24th round, supplied a majority of the offense, to give the Chiefs their second win in as many nights.

The Chiefs jumped out to quick 2-0 in the top of the first when Nuzzo hit a two- run bomb to left, scoring Tony Serino in front of him, who drew a walk from starter Ryan Pordes (0-1).

Clegg and Pordes matched zeros until Alibrandis broke through and cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Consecutive singles from Mike Maguire, Jamil Moquette, and Anthony Perry led to the run.

The Chiefs’ lead went to 4-1 in the top of the sixth. Leivi Ventura reached on an error before Aaron Williams singled to right. Nate Witkowski followed and drilled a shot off the fence in right-center, scoring Ventura, to make it 3-1. Catcher Shane Stande was next and he hit an infield chopper on which Williams beat the throw to the plate for the fourth run. Stande then stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs. Pordes kept his club in the game when he got Mike Burgoyne on a pop-up and then struck out Serino and Juan Portes in succession.

Joe Saia came on for Clegg and worked a scoreless sixth and Lew Jensen relieved Pordes and set the Chiefs down in the top the seventh.

Albrandis almost came all the way back in the home half of the seventh. They scored twice using four walks, and infield hit, and a balk, off lefty Mike Gedman. The Chiefs held on for the win when Gedman got Perry to fly out to Williams in right, with the bases loaded, to end the game.

Malden, MA- Jared Freni went six overpowering innings, striking out a dozen, when the Chiefs took the 2018 season opener 7-1 over the Malden Maddogs at Maplewood Park.

The Chiefs took 1-0 lead in the top of the first on singles from Tony Serino and Matt Nuzzo and a sacrifice fly from former New York Met farmhand Leivi Ventura, who impressed in his ICL debut.

The lead went to 2-0 in the fourth when Ventura led off the inning with a long triple to right-center and scored on a Danny DiMare bullet off the centerfield fence.

Freni meanwhile was cruising through the first five frames before his mates gave him plenty of breathing room, scoring five times in the bottom of the fifth. Serino led things off with a walk but was forced at second on a Juan Portes grounder. Maddog starter Xavier Faria ran into some control issues and walked Matt Nuzzo and Peter Copa in succession to load the bases. Ventura then delivered his second RBI of the night with a line single to right, scoring Portes, to make it a 3-0 game. Faria then walked DiMare to force in Nuzzo for the fourth Chiefs’ run. Catcher Kyle Dembrowski struck out swinging for the second out before Mike Burgoyne drew another bases loaded walk to jump the lead to 5-0. Nate Witkowski followed and drilled a two RBI single up the middle that put the game out of reach at 7-0.

The Maddogs scored an unearned run in their half of the sixth inning when Aaron Williams, who came on for Serino in center, dropped Cooper Anibal’s fly ball. Anibal stole third and came on to score when Dembrowski’s throw sailed into left-field.

Freni threw 101 pitches over his six innings and allowed five hits before giving way to Mike Gedman who worked a scoreless seventh.

Chiefs Chatter….Nuzzo reached base four times on two singles, a walk, and a hit by pitch…..DiMare swiped the Chiefs’ first base of the year after driving in Ventura in the fourth inning….Second year man Jamel Vilmont made a nice running catch of a Pete Maltzan fly ball down the right-field line in the top of the seventh….Freni, who won his 69th career game, surpassed Ari Koufos on the Chiefs’ career innings pitched list and now has thrown 619 frames since his debut in 2006.
