Malden, MA- Evan Walsh evened his record at 3-3 and Leivi Ventura belted a fourth inning grand slam to lead the Chiefs to a 10-2 win over the Malden Maddogs on Tuesday night. With the win the Chiefs snapped a four-game losing skid.

The Maddogs jumped up to a 2-0 lead against Walsh in the bottom of the first on singles from Pete Maltzan, Kevin Alexy, Jon Argetsinger and Shane O’Halloran.

The Chiefs cut the lead in half to 2-1 in the top of the second. Johnny Welch led off with a double off the left-centerfield fence, moved to second on a walk to Nate Witkowski, went to third on a fly ball, and scored when Blaine McLean uncorked a wild pitch.

The Chiefs scored four times in the top of the third to take a 5-2 lead. Shane Stande reached on an infield error and Tony Serino then singled. Matt Nuzzo followed with double into the leftfield corner that scored Stande to tie the game at two. Welch was next and the Chiefs caught a break when Maltzan lost his flyball in the twilight, falling for single and scoring Serino. When the Maddogs bobbled the ball in the outfield, Nuzzo also scored on the play to make it 4-2 Chiefs. Afer Leivi Ventura grounded into a doubleplay, Kyle Dembrowski delivered Welch with a single to left upping the margin to 5-2.

A Danny DiMare single, a walk to Stande, and a Nuzzo single, loaded the bases in the top of the fourth. Welch made it a 6-2 game with a single that scored DiMare and chased McLean. Ventura then put things out of reach when he greeted reliever Nick Berger with a grand slam, jumping the lead to 10-2.

Walsh threw five innings of scoreless baseball until giving way to reliever David Kerns in the seventh. The southpaw gave up seven hits (only three after the first inning) and struck out six. Kerns recorded two K’s when he got the Malden side in order in the seventh.

McClean dipped to 1-4 on the year. After giving up the grand slam, Berger was impressive, keeping the Chiefs scoreless over the last three innings and allowing just one more hit while striking out eight.

Malden, MA- The Lexington Blue Sox made a five run third inning stand up to beat the Chiefs 5-2 at Maplewood on Monday night. Former Boston Red Sox righty Manny Delcarmen pitched out of bases loaded situation in the bottom of the sixth inning to pick up the five out save.

It was a vintage match-up between Lexington’s Drew Brzozowski and Jared Freni, two of the ICL’s best pitchers over the last decade.

Freni got the Blue Sox side in order in the top of the first and the Chiefs threatened but, as they have done so many times this season, couldn’t push a run across. Matt Nuzzo, making a rare appearance in the leadoff spot, started the inning with a line single to left. Juan Portes was next and he singled up the middle. Brozozowski pitched out of it by catching Johnny Welch looking, getting Ben Waldrip on deep fly to the warning track in right, and then striking out Leivi Ventura.

Freni and the Chiefs dodged a bullet in the top of the second when a Tony Serino to Nuzzo to Shane Stande relay cut down Dan Graham (single) at the plate on a Justin Silvestro double to right-center.

The Chiefs went quietly in the bottom of the second.

Lexington came up with all of their runs in the top of the third. Singles from Ross Curley, Justin Silvestro and Jeff Vigurs, two walks, and a double from Tyler Ferguson gave the visitors a 5-0 lead.

Johnny Welch cut the lead to 5-1 in the home half of the third when he hit his fifth homer of the year to left-center.

Tim Dunphy came on for Freni in the top of the fourth and kept the Blue Sox off the board despite a two out triple from Curley.

The Chiefs got two men aboard in the bottom of the fourth on a Nate Witkowski single and a walk to Stande but reliever Nick Godfroy got Nuzzo to bounce out to end the inning.

Graham doubled with one out in the top of the fifth but Dunphy again pitched out of it when he struck out Silvestro and then got Vigurs on fly to Portes in left.

Another threat went by the boards for the Chiefs in the bottom of the fifth. Welch and Waldrip both singled with one out but Godfroy got Ventura to ground into a 5-3 double play to end the inning.

The Blue Sox went in order against Dunphy in the top of the sixth and the Chiefs looked poised to make a comeback in the bottom of the inning before Delcarmen came on to put the fire out. Peter Copa led off with a single to left against Kelvin Guzman. After Witkowski popped up down the rightfield line for the first out, Guzman surrendered three consecutive singles to Serino, pinch-hitter Kyle Dembrowski (RBI), and Nuzzo that cut the lead to 5-2 and kept the bases loaded. Enter Delcarmen, who after an eight pitch battle, struck out Portes and then got Welch on infield grounder to keep the Blue Sox in front.

Dunphy tossed his fourth consecutive shutout frame in the top of the seventh and Delcarmen got the Chiefs in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.

Godfroy (2-2) got the win while Freni (3-2) took the loss.

Malden, MA- The Chiefs once again saw a slim lead slip away in the late innings to lose 4-3 decision to the Reading Bulldogs at Maplewood on Wednesday night. It was the third straight game that they took a lead into the fifth inning or later and couldn’t hold on for the win.

Lefty Mike Gedman made his first start of the season and certainly gave the Chiefs every opportunity to come away with a win. Gedman retired the first eight batters of the game, four via strikeout.

The Chiefs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Juan Portes singled with one out and scored when Leivi Ventura cracked his fourth homer of the season to straight-away center off Reading starter Jack Burke.

After retiring the aforementioned first eight in a row, the Bulldogs got their first two baserunners on against Gedman in the top of the third. Johnny Hayes reached on a two out error by Johnny Welch at third, and Darren Hartwell singled, before Gedman got Tyler Cedeno on an infield grounder.

Burke got Tony Serino, Matt Nuzzo and Ben Waldrip on consecutive infield grounders in the bottom of the third and the Bulldogs cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Jeff Roy led off and legged out an infield single, moved to second on a walk to Zac Talis, stole third, and scored on Chris Bosco’s sacrifice fly to center. Gedman and the Chiefs stayed in the lead when they turned a Nuzzo to Nate Witkowski to Peter Copa doubleplay to end the inning.

Welch quickly gave the Chiefs their second two run lead of the night at 3-1 when he led off the bottom of the fourth with his fourth homer of the year to left.

The Bulldogs did all of their damage with one out in the top off fifth. After Gedman got Joey Hodapp to ground out, Shane Nowak dropped a single into right. Veteran Johnny Hayes then delivered the Bulldogs’ loudest hit of the night when he laced a double into the left-center field gap that sent Nowak to third. Hartwell was then hit by a Gedman pitch that loaded the bases. Cedeno reached on an infield single into the shortstop hole that scored Nowak to make it a 3-2 game. Roy followed and he hit a grounder to Nuzzo, who flipped to Witkowski for the second out, with Hayes scoring to make it 3-3. Talis was next and he hit a tough high chopper to Welch at third but his throw pulled Copa off the bag for an error with Hartwell scoring the go ahead run on the play. Gedman kept it a one run game when he got Bosco on a fly to Serino in center.

The Chiefs got a one out single from Shane Stande in the bottom of the fifth but couldn’t draw even when Burke got Serino on a sharp liner to left and then struck out Nuzzo.

Tim Dunphy came out of the Chiefs’ bullpen and got the bottom third of the Bulldogs’ order in succession in the top of the sixth.

The Bulldogs turned the game over to Eckerd College lefty Cam Lanzilli in the bottom of the sixth. The Stoneham MA product didn't disappoint when he got Waldrip on a grounder to third, Welch on a chopper in front of the plate, and Portes on a screeching liner to second to retire the side.

Dunphy allowed a one out single to Hartwell in the top of the seventh before getting both Cedeno and Roy on comebackers to the mound to send the game to the bottom of the seventh.

Lanzilli never let the Chiefs off the canvas in their final at bat as he struck out Ventura, got Copa on a grounder to Hayes at third, and then sealed the win by getting Witkowski on fly to right.

Burke (3-0) got the win. He went five innings and allowed six hits and struck out four. Lanzilli retired all six batters he faced and chalked up the save.

Gedman (0-1) allowed just five hits, two of the infield variety, three earned runs, and struck out four. Dunphy gave up just one hit and struck out a batter in his two innings of relief.

Malden, MA- The Chiefs uncharacteristic month long struggle continued on Monday night when they saw the Wakefield Merchants erase a 2-0 sixth inning lead and come away from Maplewood with a 4-2 win.

The Chiefs wasted another outstanding effort from southpaw Evan Walsh, who despite pitching brilliantly this summer, fell to 2-3 on the season.

The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Ben Waldrip led off with a double off the fence in right-center, went to third on a Kyle Dembrowski single to left, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Danny DiMare.

The lead went to 2-0 in the bottom of the third against Merchant starter Alex Erwin. Tony Serino drew a one out walk, moved to third on a Nate Witkowski single to right, and scored on Juan Portes’ sacrifice fly to center.

Walsh meanwhile was cruising along with a three-hit shutout until the Merchants took the lead in the top of the sixth. Ryan Collins got things started with a single to center and went to second when Serino bobbled the ball for an error. Walsh then hit Anthony Cecere with a 1-2 pitch. Paul McGunigle moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt before Chris Butler’s opposite field double to left tied the game at 2-2. Jared Freni replaced Walsh and Butler stole third. With the Chiefs’ infield drawn in, veteran Scott Searles hit a ground single to center, just out of the reach of the diving Witkowski, to score Butler with the go ahead run.

Brandon Bartlett relieved Erwin in the bottom of the sixth and got a big strikeout of Dembrowski with two men aboard to end the inning.

The Merchants added a run in the seventh to account for the 4-2 final. Erwin (1-0) got the win while Bartlett picked up his first save.
