Lexington, MA- Lefthander Evan Walsh set an all-time Intercity League record when he struck out 20 batters in a 7-0 Andre Chiefs win over the Reading Bulldogs on Saturday at Lexington High. Walsh’s gem included a nine pitch, three strikeout “immaculate inning” to close the game out in the bottom of the seventh. The only hit Walsh allowed was a centerfield single to Tyler Cedeno with two outs in the bottom of the third inning.

The previous strikeout record was set by Chiefs’ righty Jared Freni who struck 17 batters on August 6, 2010 in a 3-0 win over Mooney Dental at Ferullo Field in Woburn.

The Chiefs gave their southpaw a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Veteran catcher Nick Leva, making his first appearance of the year, singled home rookies Gino DeSimone (single) and Evan Reynolds (error).

The lead doubled to 4-0 in the top of the fifth. Leva walked, Walsh reached on an error, and Tony Serino drew another walk to load the bases. Reading starter Anthony Sapenza (0-1) took a big step to escape the jam when he got Andrew Caulfield to bounce into a 1-2-3 doubleplay. Matt Nuzzo saw to it that the Chiefs wouldn’t come away empty handed when he plated both Serino and Walsh with a two run double.

The Chiefs added three more runs in the top of the seventh against Brandon Mullarkey on consecutive doubles by Serino and Caulfield, that followed a Leva walk and a throwing error.

Walsh allowed four baserunners on the day. Cedeno’s single in the third and walks in the second, fourth and sixth. He threw 107 pitches, 70 for strikes. The former Bentley standout raised his season record to 2-0. He went six innings to get the win against the Bulldogs on June 5. In that game he allowed four hits and struck out 10.

Chiefs Chatter…. Walsh, an Arlington MA native, began his career with the ICL champion Chiefs in 2014 out of Arlington Catholic. Following the 2015 season, when he made nine appearances with a 3.50 ERA in 16 innings, he moved on to play for the Arlington Trojans in both the 2016 & 2017 campaigns. Walsh returned to the Chiefs last season when he went 4-3 in 8 starts with an ERA of 2.46….. He graduated from Bentley University in 2017. While pitching for the Falcons he recorded an 11-17 record in 48 appearances (27 starts) during his college career…. The now 5-2 Chiefs return to Maplewood on Monday to host the Melrose Americans at 8;00 PM. On Tuesday, they meet the Malden Maddogs at Maplewood at 7:45 PM…..

Malden, MA- Alibrandis erased a 2-0 Chiefs lead, scoring a run in the third and three more in the fourth inning, on the way to a 4-2 win on Wednesday night at Maplewood.

The Chiefs couldn’t capitalize on a solid pitching effort from Zach Kirby who struck out 13 Alibrandis batters.

The Chiefs jumped out to a two run lead in the bottom of the second on RBI singles from Mike Burgoyne and rookie Gino DeSimone.

Singles from Juan Parra and Teddy Dziuba and a RBI groundout from Dave Lightbody cut the Chiefs lead to 2-1 in the top of third.

Alibrandis came up with three big runs with two outs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. A walk to Matt Henriksen and singles by Mark Addesa, Parka and Dziuba accounted for the runs.

Sean Sullivan (2-0) went six innings to get his second win of the year. The veteran righty surrendered six hits and struck out seven. Brian Tanguy recorded the save by working a scoreless seventh.

Kirby, (pictured) who saw his record fall to 1-1, allowed seven hits and three earned runs.

Chiefs Chatter…. The now 4-2 Chiefs are off until Saturday when they will meet the Reading Bulldogs at Lexington High at 11:00 AM……

With Tuesday night’s game in Lexington rained out, the Chiefs will next host Alibrandis tonight at Maplewood. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:00 PM.

Zach Kirby (1-0) is expected to get the start for the Chiefs.

Following tonight’s game, the Chiefs will play on Saturday at 11:00 AM when they will meet the Reading Bulldogs at 11:00 AM in the annual Jerie DeAngelis Memorial Day of Baseball in Lexington. The Chiefs-Bulldogs matchup will be the first of four ICL games that will be played at Lexington High on Saturday.

Lexington, MA- Tuesday’s rain has caused the postponement of the Chiefs at Blue Sox game that was scheduled to be played at Lexington High.

The Chiefs are back in action on Wednesday when they will host Alibrandis at Maplewood at 8:00 PM. On Saturday they will meet the Reading Bulldogs at Lexington High at 11:00 .

Malden, MA- Ben Waldrip’s two RBI triple and Matt Nuzzo’s solo homer provided the majority of the offense, backing the efficient pitching of Tim Dunphy, to lead the Chiefs to a crisp 4-2 win over the Somerville Royals on Monday night at Maplewood.

The Chiefs handed Dunphy a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Manny Cabral drew a bases loaded walk off starter Paul Covelle.

The Royals knotted things up at 1-1 in the top of the third on a Ryan Noone RBI single.

Nuzzo put the Chiefs in front for good when he launched his second homer of the season to left with one away in the bottom of the third.

The Chiefs added a couple of big insurance runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Gedman singled and Nuzzo drew a four pitch walk from Covelle. Waldrip (pictured) then delivered them both with a triple to right that jumped the lead to 4-2.

Dunphy went six innings to get the win. The veteran lefty allowed seven hits, struck out four, and walked just one. He raised his record to 2-0 on the season. Dave Kerns worked a hitless seventh inning and secured the win while chalking up his third save of the year.

Covelle (0-1), who spent two seasons in the Seattle Mariners system, struck out seven and allowed just five hits in five innings. His brother Ryan came on for Royals and struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Chiefs Chatter…. With the win, the Chiefs raise their record to 4-1 on the young season…..Dunphy recorded his 48th career win. He now trails only Dave Marsters (99), Jared Freni (71) and Ari Koufos (49) on the all-time Andre Chiefs career list…..The Chiefs travel to Lexington High to meet the defending champion Blue Sox on Tuesday at 8:00 PM before returning to Maplewood on Wednesday at 8:00 PM to host Alibrandis. The week concludes on Saturday morning when the Chiefs meet the Reading Bulldogs in Lexington at 11:00 AM. It is the first game of four ICL games to be played as part of the annual The Jerie DeAngelis Memorial Day of Baseball.
