Justin Crisafulli Records 400th Chiefs Hit
Medford- His first hit came in 1994 on a rainy night at Alumni Stadium in Lowell when he was a shy 18 year old rookie a few days removed from his Medford High graduation. His 400th came in the second inning of last Thursday's game at Woburn's Ferullo Field.
In his almost eleven Chiefs seasons in between, Justin Crisafulli has established himself as one the greatest and most feared Chiefs hitters of all time.
Crisafulli reached the lofty ICL 400 hit plateau with a two RBI single down the left field line and now trails only Mike Langston (530) on the Chiefs all time hit list. Along the way, Justin has ripped 78 home runs and knocked in 324 runs. Add to those impressive totals the fact that he has a career .369 batting average, it becomes obvious to see why he is considered among one of the Intercity League's all time best. And for Chiefs fans the good news is that he is still going strong and will be an odds on bet to break every ICL batting record before he hangs up the spikes.
Crisafulli emerged as a star at Medford High School in the early 1990's. His baseball ability was not limited to the plate as he was considered one of the state's top high school pitchers of that era. In fact, he was actually selected by the Boston Red Sox as a pitcher in the 17th round of the 1995 major league draft. He opted to attend Western Arizona Junior College instead. That decison rewarded him with a trip to the JUCO World Series. Following his career in Arizona, Crisafulli accepted a baseball scholarship to Divison II powerhouse Central Missouri State and once again found himself playing for post season honors, this time in the D-2 World Series.
After one of the the most incredible individual ICL season's of all time, when he hit a remarkable .515 (70 for 136) with 13 homers and 57 RBI's, leading the Chiefs to a 36-6 record and another championship, Justin signed with the Cleveland Indians on the day after the 1997 season ended.
At 30, Justin still puts fear into ICL pitchers. Although his home runs totals have decreased, along with the rest of the ICL, since the league's wood bat era began in 2002, he still is always among the home run leaders.
A "True Chief" in every sense of the term, Crisafulli has now become the elder statesman of the Chiefs franchise. When his playing days are over, hopefully not for many more years, he will be remembered as not only one of the greatest hitter's in ICL history but also one of the most classiest guys to ever to wear the Chiefs uniform.
Justin Crisafulli's Road to 400 Chiefs Hits
DiCato 3 hitter, Andre 3 run homer lead Chiefs to 6-1 win
The Chiefs started quickly against Americans starter Alex Sosnowski of Sam Houston State. Sosnowski got leadoff man Rick Sotiropoulos to fly out but trouble began when Phil Costello reached on an infield error. Justin Crisafulli then singled to left and Andre gave the Chiefs a quick 3-0 lead when he hit a towering home run over the right field fence. Singles from Jeff DeCarlo, Sean O'Brien and Jimmy Buldini increased the Chiefs lead to 4-0 and drove Sosnowski from the mound after just 2/3rds of an inning.
The Americans closed the gap to 4-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Mike Burgoyne reached on an error by shortstop Rich Montecalvo went to second on a Charlie Pagliarulo single, to third on an infield groundout and eventually scored on a Steve Tamoush grounder to DeCarlo at first.
The Chiefs increased their lead to 6-1 in the third on RBI singles from Buldini and Doug Heald.
DiCato was in control all evening long and needed just 72 pitches to pick up his first ICL win. The former Malden Catholic and present UMass star struck out three and walked just one.
Chiefs Notes...The Chiefs are off until Wednesday when they host Gately at Playstead at 6:00 PM. Mike Lanciani is expected to come off the DL and get the start....DiCato lowered his ERA to 2.80 with the win.....Andre remains among the ICL leaders in hitting with a .390 average.....
Simon (Perfect Game thru 4.1), Blue Sox Thump Chiefs
The Sox jumped on Chiefs starter and loser Mike Chandler for seven runs and six hits in 2.1 innings. Paul Bratton, Dean Corsi and Mark Blake also worked for the Chiefs in the loss.
Simon retired the first 13 Chiefs batters he faced before cleanup man Mike Andre broke up his perfect game bid with a single up the middle with one out in the fifth inning.
Steve Bodnar (Babson) and Rob Oteiri (Holy Cross) worked the sixth and seventh innings respectively for Lexington. A Rich Montecalvo sixth inning single off Bodnar and a Mike DiCato seventh inning single off Oteiri accounted for the Chiefs other two hits of the game.

Cooke & Lexington Outduel Coppinger & Chiefs, 2-0
The Chiefs outhit the Sox 7-5 but were unable to break into the scoring column against Cooke, who has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the ICL over the last five years. Cooke went to a perfect 4-0 with the complete game win and lowered his ERA to 0.57.
Coppinger nearly matched Cooke pitch for pitch but the only two walks that he issued on the night came back to haunt him as they both scored.
Lexington took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jake Dillard (Southwest Oklahoma) walked, stole second and scored on a Sean McElroy single to center. The Sox increased their lead to 2-0 in the third when Danny Powers (Holy Cross) walked and scored when McElroy and Dan Hughes (Brown University) both singled.
Mike DiCato, .241 (UMass), Justin Crisafulli, .250 (Central Missouri State/Cleveland Indians) and Mike Andre, .395(Merrimack) had two hits apiece for the Chiefs. Jeff DeCarlo, .227(University of Michigan) added the seventh Chiefs hit, a second inning single.
Following a day off on Saturday, the Chiefs remain in Lexington for the weekend and will again play the Blue Sox on Sunday at 5:00 PM.
The Chiefs were undecided on their starting pitcher for Sunday's contest.
