Medford-The Chiefs closed out the 2006 season in the much the same way they opened it, with a win over the Gately A's at Playstead Park.

On opening day in May, the Chiefs shutout the A's 6-0 behind Mike Lanciani. On Sunday afternoon the Chiefs rode the pitching of Mark Blake and some timely hitting to best the A's 4-3 with a walkoff win.

Although the Chiefs ended their campaign on a winning note, it will be the first time in the team's 44 historic seasons that it will not be partcipating in the playoffs.

Blake, making his first start of the year, pitched five innings of outstanding shutout baseball and was aided by two inning ending double plays putting his team in a position to win the game in their last at bat.

Blake retired the A's in the top of the first and the Chiefs took 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning. A's starter Dan Orme (Cambridge, MA, Vassar College) struck out Matt Boleski for the first out. Mike DiCato then lined a single to center and Rick Salvia let it skip by him allowing DiCato to take second. Justin Crisafulli popped up for out number two. Mike Andre delivered DiCato when he lined a 3-2 pitch to center for a RBI single giving the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Blake and Orme matched zeros until the Chiefs threatened for more in the third. Crisafulli and Andre both lined two out singles to left and right respectively but Orme got Jeff DeCarlo swinging which ended the threat.

In the fourth a Matt Delaney single put him on first with one but the inning ended when the Chiefs turned a Andre to Doug Heald to DiCato 5-4-3 double play off the bat off Billy Manley.

The Chiefs responded with a couple of  runs in the home half of the fourth when Phil Costello singled and both Heald and catcher Ryan Sheehan reached on infield errors making it a 3-0 Chiefs margin.

In the top of the fifth Tony DeCesare led off with a single. A Mike Roberts fly out set the stage for Scott Blumasck who grounded into a Montecalvo to Heald to DiCato 6-4-3 double play.

The A's broke through with three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at three. Singles by Derek Cotoni, Salvia, Matt Delaney and Jesse Bruinsma and an error by shortstop Rich Montecalvo led to the A's runs.

The Chiefs threatened in the bottom of the sixth but Salvia made a perfect throw to the plate to nail Montecalvo who was trying to score from third on a Sheehan fly to center.

Paul Bratton took over for Blake in the seventh and walked Mark Piantedosi to start the inning. DeCarlo came on and fielded Cotoni's bunt and threw Piantedosi out at second. Salvia popped to DiCato and after Delaney walked Sheehan threw Cotoni out at third to end the inning.

The Chiefs won the game in the bottom of the seventh. DiCato got things going when he lined a single to right center. Crisafulli then looped a single to left and Anthony Weiner came on to run. Pinch hitter Rob Noe then moved them both up a base with a perfect sacrifice bunt. DeCarlo ended the game when he hit a ground single to left scoring DiCato giving the Chiefs the 4-3 win.

Merchants Marchesi Handcuffs Chiefs, 6-0

Posted by Chiefs Baseball at Aug 1, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Wakefield- Righty Jarrod Marchesi twirled a neat two hitter as the Merchants beat the Chiefs 6-0 at Walsh Field on Wednesday night.

The former Everett High star, who now pitches at Bentley College, retired the first 15 Chiefs in a row before yielding a sixth inning single to Matt Boleski.

The Chiefs Mike DiCato desreved a much better fate, allowing just five hits and three earned runs. DiCato struck out five and walked just two.

The Chiefs complete the home and home series with the Merchants at Playstead on Thursday night at 6:00 PM. Righty Mike Chandler (Hamilton, MA, Merrimack College) will be the starter for the Chiefs. The Merchants, looking to firm up a playoff spot, are expected to counter with veteran Chicago Cubs farmhand Steve Coffey.

Watertown-Eighteen year old Jared Freni picked up his second win in as many starts and his teammates backed him up with a ten hit attack, including five doubles, as the Chiefs knocked off the second place Reds 7-5 at sultry Victory Field on Monday night.

Freni, the former Malden Catholic star who is UMass-Amherst bound this fall, worked six full innings before giving way to Mike DiCato and Jeff DeCarlo who preserved his win in the seventh.

After Reds starter Joe Chiodo set the Chiefs down in the top of the first, Watertown jumped out to 2-0 in the bottom of the inning. Luke Begley led off with a single. Will Bissonnette flew to left for the first out and Freni got Brian Shapiro striking out swinging as Begley stole second. Matt McEvoy then singled to right scoring Begley for a 1-0 Reds lead. Freni then issued three consecutive walks that forced home McEvoy for a 2-0 Watertown lead.

It stayed that way until the Chiefs cut the margin in half in the top of the third. Doug Heald got things going when he singled to right. Matt Boleski moved him up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Jimmy Buldini delivered Heald with a long RBI double to left center. DiCato then drew a walk and Justin Crisafulli was hit by a pitch to load the bases for cleanup man Mike Andre.
The Chiefs looked as if they were going to take the lead but Chiodo escaped the jam when Andre's hard liner was stabbed by shortstop Bissonnette who doubled up DiCato at second.

Freni left Brendan Eygabroat (two out double) stranded at secondbse in the Reds third when he struck out Ben Chang swinging .

The Chiefs came up with one of their biggest innings of the year in the top of the fourth when they put up a half dozen runs to take a 7-2 lead. Chiodo got Jeff DeCarlo to pop up for the first out. Catcher Rob Noe (St. John's Prep) sparked the big inning when he drilled the first hit of ICL career, a long double to left. Phil Costello then drew a walk. Rich Montecalvo then delivered the second double of the inning to rightcenter scoring Noe to knot the game at two. Chiodo came up temporarily large when he struck out Heald swinging with runners on second and third for the second out of the inning. The Chiefs then caught a huge break when the usually sure handed Begley bobbled Boleski's apparent inning ending grounder to second which allowed Costello to score and give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead. Buldini then made it hurt when he roped a single to left scoring Montecalvo to make it 4-2. DiCato then singled sharply to center scoring Montecalvo to run the lead to 5-2. Crisafulli unloaded on a Chiodo fastball and drilled it to deep center for the inning's third double and a 7-2 Chiefs lead. Brain Shapiro replaced Chiodo and walked Andre before getting DeCarlo to fly to deep left to end the inning.

Freni worked an easy bottom of the fourth and Shapiro worked a 1-2-3 top of the fifth.

The Reds came up with two runs off Freni in the bottom of the fifth and threatened for more before the big righty settled down and got out of a major league bases loaded jam.
Shapiro and McEvoy led the inning off with two sharp singles. Dan Chaisson then drew a walk that loaded the bases with nobody out. Freni then walked Eygabroat that forced in a run cutting the Chiefs lead to 7-3. Chang singled to center scoring McEvoy making it 7-4, still with the bases loaded and still nobody out. That's where Freni, who led EMass this past spring with 119 strikeouts, bulled his neck and struck out both John Lynch and Dave Wang and got Begley to ground to Andre at third to keep the Chiefs lead intact.

Shapiro escaped a Chiefs threat in the sixth when Heald reached on an error and went to third when Boleski doubled into the right field corner. The Chiefs then botched a suicide bunt attempt with Buldini at the plate and Heald was tagged out. Buldini eventually struck out but DiCato followed with his second single of the night to center that moved Boleski to third. Shapiro then got Crisafulli to line sharply to short to end the inning.

A McEvoy single was all that the Reds could muster against Freni in the sixth and the Chiefs threatened to add to their lead in the top of the seventh. Andre led things off with a line single to center off Reds reliever Aram Manoukian. The righty then struck out DeCarlo and Noe followed by drawing a walk. Costello then lined sharply to right where Wang made a nice running catch and doubled Noe off first to end the inning.

The Reds did not go quietly in the seventh. DiCato came on in relief of Freni and walked Eygabroat on four "extremely close" pitches. He then hit Chang to put runners at first and second with nobody out. DeCarlo came on to pitch to Lynch and got him to pop up to Heald at second for out number one. Wang then singled to right scoring Eygabroat to make it a 7-5 lead. That was all the Reds were to get as DeCarlo got Begley to fly to center and Bissonnette to ground to third to notch his first save of the year and end the game.

Chiefs Notebook....Freni threw 120 pitches striking out six and walking six. He allowed eight hits in his six innings of work.....Boleski broke out of a season long slump with a sharp double to right in the sixth. He also had a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error.....The seven inning game was the longest that the Chiefs have played this season taking two hours and forty three minutes to complete.....
Intercity All-Stars Hit Boston Park League with Loss BOSTON HERALD Monday, July 24, 2006 WAKEFIELD - Intercity League All-Star head coach Rick DeAngelis committed the unthinkable at the conclusion of his squad’s 4-1 victory over the Boston Park League All-Stars yesterday at Walsh Field. The veteran skipper, who also manages two-time ICL champion Lexington, was cheering on Tim Dempsey of the Cassell Club, one of the Blue Sox’ foes. “It was a bit strange to be cheering on a rival,” DeAngelis said. “But it is easy to root for this team because it was a real privilege for me to coach these guys.” Shut out for eight innings, the BPL mounted a threat in the top of the ninth against ICL pitcher Brian Shapiro (Watertown Reds). With no outs, reserve Evan Targugno (Stockyard) reached second after ICL committed its only error of the game. A.J. Turner (Mass. Envelope) followed with a single to center, putting runners at the corners. Matt Moyen’s (Mass. Envelope) RBI groundout then cut BPL’s deficit to 4-1. The ICL could have done additional damage, but, with two men aboard, Jim Pierce (ADSL) watched Dempsey run down his deep shot to center. Turner attempted to tag up, but Dempsey gunned the ball to catcher Matt Fiore (Mooney Dental), who applied the tag for a game-ending double play. “It is nice to end on an upbeat play like that,” DeAngelis said. It was fitting that DeAngelis’ crew ignited ICL’s offense. Bill Cooke (Blue Sox) surrendered a leadoff single to Brandon Cody (Padres) in the first before inducing three straight fly balls to get out of the frame. In the bottom of the second, Dan Powers (Lexington) walked and moved to second on a single by Jesse Bruinsma (Gately). Starting catcher Eric Poling (Lexington) then mashed a 1-2 offering from Frank Emery (Mass. Envelope) to center, scoring Powers to give ICL the 1-0 lead. In the third, Jake Dillard (Lexington) cranked a double to deep left and then motored his way into third on the first of two BPL errors. He scored on Josh Klimkiewicz’s (Casell) RBI groundout to stretch ICL’s lead to 2-0. In the sixth, BPL threatened. After Turner led things off with a bunt single, Pierce pulverized an offering from Derek Cotonis (Gately) only to watch the pitcher snag the ball on its way back up the middle and then doubled up Turner. “We came out aggressive, but I think that we missed some opportunities,” BPL manager/designated hitter Steve Busby said. “It was a well-pitched game and I thought that we did hit the ball hard early.” ICL tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. Jamie Gath (Gately) reached on a batter’s interference call and then back-to-back singles by Jeff Paquette (Cassell) and Dan Hughes (Lexington) loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Mike Andre (Andre Chiefs) scored Gath and then Paquette scooted home on a passed ball to make it a 4-0 game.
