Chiefs Jeff Bercume Signs with Oakland A's
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Chiefs centerfielder and former Merrimack College baseball standout Jeff Bercume of Leicester, MA, signed with the Oakland Athletics earlier this week and will play for the Class A affiliate Vancouver Canadians beginning in June. Bercume becomes the 111th player to wear a Chiefs uniform to ink a professional contract.
Bercume, who played two seasons for the Chiefs, started 36 games for the Chiefs last summer hitting an overall .325 with six doubles, three triples, four homers and 25 RBI. He was named to the Intercity League all-star team in July.
The all-time hits leader at Merrimack College, Bercume is the first Merrimack baseball player since Cory Spencer ’99 to sign with a professional team. Despite not being drafted in June of 2009, Bercume has since been preparing for the opportunity to make a professional squad.“I made the decision last June that in the event I was not selected in the first year player draft I would do everything I could to sign as a free agent with either an MLB affiliated team or a Professional Independent Club,” Bercume said on Friday.
After many professional tryouts in 2009, Bercume found himself in the California Winter League, a professional development and showcase league in Palm Springs designed to give unsigned players 20 games in front of professional scouts. The CWL was where Bercume caught the eye of Chris Weissmann and the Oakland A’s. Despite their interest, a hamstring injury would put his baseball playing on hold momentarily. Intense rehabilitation and hard work at home in Massachusetts kept Bercume in shape and ready for the call should that day come.“After a month of rehabbing back home I received a call from Chris Weissmann for extended spring training in Phoenix,” Bercume said. “They liked me enough to keep me around for a few weeks and eventually offered me a contract on May 12.”
On top of his good fortune of being signed while in Phoenix, Bercume had the pleasure of playing alongside and learning from players such as Mark Ellis, Brett Tomko and Coco Crisp. With the chance to live his dream, Bercume added, “Being a member of this organization and taking the field everyday with the A's uniform on my back is an unbelievable opportunity and I am very grateful for the chance to hopefully make a career out of playing baseball.”Bercume’s noticeable improvement from year-to-year was evidenced through his numbers, but his dedication and commitment may be even more impressive.
“Jeff’s determination and will to accomplish his personal mission speaks volumes about him as a person,” said Merrimack College coach and former Wakefield Merchant Joe Sarno. “I am so proud of him and I wish him nothing but the best in his future. I know that no matter what he ends up doing in life he will be a major success because of the determination he possesses.” ---Will Rothermel

We all have excuses…
“I do not have time”
“It is too cold outdoors”
“I am not motivated”
“I will when I am ready”
“No one keeps me accountable”
By not being involved in a successful program, and no one to remind you to change the monotony of the daily routine, are setting yourself up for more of the same…procrastination, inactivity, and unmotivated.
After a winter of reduced activity or inactivity, it is time to dust off the cleats and the glove as the weather starts to improve. To be in playing shape by seasons start, you will need to begin preparing long before the first pitch crosses home plate. A word of warning, you may be tempted to exercise at the same level you did at the end of the last season, but most of us will be utterly surprised to realize we are not up to a level of conditioning to just run out on the field and get right back into the game. More often than not, this leads to early season injuries and unwanted time in the dugout.
If you changed your routine or took a vacation from fitness all together, you need to take the time to train progressively prior to the start of the baseball season. Here are a few tips to make the best decisions regarding your specific spring training. Please consider Fitness Together Medford. Allow us the opportunity to make you into an even better athlete.1. Develop a Training Plan. A solid baseball-training regimen will focus on Cardiovascular Fitness, Flexibility, Strength Training, and Nutrition.
2. Slow but Steady. Avoid the weekend warrior syndrome. Try to get some exercise on a daily basis. Remember, do not expect to be playing hard all weekend and doing nothing during the week.
3. Monitor Your Level of Exertion. Use the perceived exertion scale, the talk test, or the heart rate range to help you determine an appropriate intensity level. Stay on track, see improvements by beginning at the correct level, and build up over several weeks.
4. Increase Your Training Slowly. Increasing training (mileage, time or amount of weight lifted) more than ten percent per week increases your risk of injury. To avoid this, increase training gradually over the entire month and a half.
5. Avoid Overtraining and Disappointment. Depending on your activity level over the winter, it could take up to six weeks to re-establish a solid fitness base. Starting this program slowly and appropriately with program modifications will gradually increase your aerobic endurance and stamina. Make sure to allow enough rest and recovery between training days.
6. Follow a Training Program that works for you. If you really want to perform optimally, Sports Specific training is essential. Working with a personal trainer who is dedicated to planning and programming for your individual needs will take all the guesswork out of it.
7. Protect the Shoulder Joint. Proper evaluation and Sports Specific training will ensure that you do not put your shoulder at risk for injury. After a movement screening and checking for any impingements, we will be able to progress you as needed.
Keep in mind that Sports Specific Training is essential in order to be on your game in the game. Be pro-active and start training with the guidance and coaching you deserve.
