Indians

The Alameda AAA Indians defeated the Padres in a closely contested game featuring good offense and defense from both teams.

Micah Rothenbuhler opened the game pitching for the Indians against Hidalgo of the Padres.  Hidalgo struck out, bringing up Wrobel, who beat the throw to first on a grounder to second.  Riley stepped up to bat for the Padres, but Wrobel was tagged out attempting to steal second before Riley beat out a bouncing grounder to short.  Forster walked, giving the Padres runners on first and second.  Moler singled on a grounder back to the pitcher that proved hard to handle, and Riley scored for the Padres.  Wei grounded to the mound and Rothenbuhler made the throw to Evan Park at first to retire the side.

Nick Stevens led off the bottom of the first for the Indians against Hidalgo for the Padres.  Stevens singled on a fly to shallow center and then stole second.  Jackson Tracy's fly to left center scored Stevens and was good for a single.  Rothenbuhler grounded to third base for a single, but a force play was made on Tracy at second for one away.  Michael Copple singled, advancing Rothenbuhler, and both runners scored when Isaac Maximov hit a fly into left field for a triple.  Trevor Greenley hit a bouncing grounder to second and was thrown out at first, but collected an RBI as Maximov scored.  Derek Snediker followed with a fly to shallow left for a double, and advanced to third when Wyatt Arens singled on a hit to second.  A steal to second by Arens with Park at bat gave the Indians runners on second and third, but they were stranded there when Parks pop-up was caught just above the grass by Hidalgo .  The score at the end of the first inning was Padres one, the Indians four.

Rothenbuhler again took the mound for the Indians in the second inning.  Verduzco led off for the Padres with a ground ball to Maximov at short, and he connected with Park for the force play at first.  Smith was hit by a pitch and took his base and was held there when St. Martin popped up and Maximov made the catch for two away.  Mercado advanced Smith to second with a fly ball single to shallow center, but both were left on base when Republicano grounded to third and Greenley made the play for the force out.

The Indians were able to add to their lead in the bottom of the second.  Casey Thiering led off with a grounder back to Hidalgo on the mound, but the ball was deflected to the short stop, who made the throw to first in time to get the out.  Liam Bergstrom took the pitcher to a full count before taking a base on balls.  Stevens followed with a grounder to the pitcher, but Bergstrom beat the force play throw to second and the Indians had two men on.  The runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch to Tracy, but were held to their respective bases when Tracy popped up and the second baseman made the catch.  Rothenbuhler brought in the runners with a single stretched to a double when he took second as a throw was made to home.  The Padres made the play on Copple's grounder to short and threw him out at first, stranding Rothenbuhler and holding the Indians to two runs in the inning for a score of Padres one, Indians six.

Both the Indians and the Padres added to their scores in the third inning.  The Padres returned to the top of their order with Hidalgo facing Rothenbuhler on the mound.  A fly to shallow right field put Hidalgo on first, and Wrobel's hard grounder to left was good for a double and brought Hidalgo home.  Wrobel stole third before Riley struck out swinging, and then stole home on a wild pitch with Forster at bat.  Forster then grounded to right for a single and remained at first as Moler struck out.  Forster stole second before Wei walked to give the Padres runners on first and second.  Verduzco came to the plate and a pitch in the dirt allowed the runners to advance, but a grounder to second was handled by Tracy, who made the throw to first for the force out to retire the side.

Maximov led off the third for the Indians as Hidalgo returned to the mound. A fly to center dropped in the gap for a double, and with Greenley batting Maximov stole third.  Greenley's fly ball double to center right scored Maximov, and Snediker's fly ball double to left field advanced Greenley to third.  Arens grounded to the shortstop, scoring Greenley, and the Padres decided it was time to make a pitching change.  Riley took the mound, striking out Park, but not before Arens stole second.  Arens was caught off the bag and tagged out before Thiering took a base on balls.  Thiering stole second but was stranded there when Bergstrom was called out on strikes to end the inning.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth.  Snediker took over the pitching duties for the Indians, striking out Smith to start off the inning.  St. Martin hit a hard shot back to the mound, but Snediker fielded the ball and made the throw to Arens the force at first.  Mercado hit a difficult to handle grounder to first but was able to beat the tag for a single.  Republicano followed with a walk and the Padres had runners on first and second, then Mercado stole third before Snediker struck out Hidalgo to hold the Padres scoreless.

Stevens led off the fourth for the Indians against Riley on the mound for the Padres as the Indians went three up and three down in the fourth.  Stevens flied out to second, and Tracy was called out on strikes.  Rothenbuhler struck out swinging and the fourth inning was complete.

Snediker returned to the mound for the Indians in the fifth, walking the Padre's lead-off batter, Wrobel.  Riley also took a base on balls and it was time for the Indians to bring in a fresh pitcher.  Copple took the mound against Forster, and a fly to Greenley at second was caught for one away and the runners were held at first and second.  Moler hit a long fly to left, scoring Wrobel and making third base, but a good throw to the plate allowed Rothenbuhler to tag Riley out and prevent another run from scoring.  Wei popped up towards third and Copple made the catch to retire the Padres, stranding Moler at third.

Copple led off the fifth for the Indians against Riley returning for the Padres.  Copple took a base on balls, and then was held there when Maximov popped up to second base.  With Greenley at bat Copple stole second, and then advanced to third and scoring position when Greenley's short grounder was fielded by the catcher and Greenley was thrown out at first.  Snediker walked, and then stole second before Arens flied to right for a single, scoring Copple.  Snediker tried to make it two runs for the inning but the throw to the plate was in time and he was tagged out, ending the fifth with each team adding a run to their respective totals.  The score at the end of five was Indians nine, Padres three.
