Northside Sophomore Alex Ortiz had a BIG week. Alex Ortiz won the Varsity 1600m on Tuesday, broke a school record on Friday, and qualified for the CPS Sophomore Championships in the 3200m and 1600m on Saturday. Ortiz won his heat of the 1600m on Saturday to qualify for the City Finals by outkicking the field in the final 100m.

In 2015, Alex Ortiz has won the Sophomore 1600m at the Niles West Fred Zeedyk Invitational, won the Sophomore 1600m at the Geneva Mike Van Deever Invitational, and won the Varsity 1600m run at the Lake Forest Caxys Classic.

Alex Ortiz has incredible mental toughness and an awesome finishing kick.

Northside Sophomore phenom Alex Ortiz ran the anchor leg of the 4x1600m Relay at Spartan Relays.

Northside Sophomore Alex Ortiz ran the first 400m in 68 seconds, and then ran the next 400m in 72 seconds for an 800m split of 2:20. Alex Ortiz then ran the next 400m in 74 seconds for a 1200m split of 3:34. Alex Ortiz then outkicked two runners in the final 400m with a NEGATIVE split of 72 seconds for a PERSONAL BEST 1600m time of 4:46.60 to anchor Northside to third place, and a NEW SCHOOL RECORD of 18:21! Alex Ortiz dropped 2 seconds off his best 1600m time (4:48.59) with a personal best time of 4:46.60.

From Freshman Year (5:39.38) to Sophomore Year (4:46.60), Alex Ortiz has dropped 53 seconds in the 1600m run!

 Northside Senior Malcolm Grba, Junior Danny Rosen, Sophomore Kyle Friedler, and Sophomore Alex Ortiz BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD by 34 seconds (18:55.40) with an impressive 4x1600m Relay time of 18:21.00! Malcolm Grba, Danny Rosen, Kyle Friedler, and Alex Ortiz were awarded MEDALS at Spartan Relays for their outstanding performance. Malcolm Grba, Danny Rosen, Kyle Friedler, and Alex Ortiz will be honored again in practice on Monday and will receive Watermelons for breaking the school record! Malcolm Grba, Danny Rosen, Kyle Friedler, and Alex Ortiz will also receive plaques for breaking the school record at the June 5, 2015 Northside Track & Field Banquet at the East Bank Club.

 Northside ran a school record time of 18:21, and posted victories over: 4. Glenbrook South (18:45.40), 5. Highland Park (19:03.00), 6. Glenbrook North (19:07.10), 7. Deerfield (19:07.70), 8. Loyola (19:20.60), 9. Lake Forest (19:24.80), 10. Stevenson (19:34.30), and 11. Waukegan.

The Northside High Hurdle Shuttle Relay record was 1:11.60 (2014), and was held by All Time Greats Lucien Fitzpatrick, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Garret Barch.

In the 4x110m High Hurdle Shuttle Relay, Northside Junior Garret Barch hurdled a 16.67 110m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Senior Porter Abbey hurdled a 17.50 110m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Senior Matt Osborne hurdled a 17.72 110m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Junior Justin Washington anchored the Chicago Northside Mustangs to THIRD place overall with a 16.40 110m split to BREAK THE SCHOOL RECORD by 3.20 seconds with an official time of 1:08.40. Garret Barch, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Justin Washington were awarded MEDALS for finishing in THIRD place overall. Garret Barch, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Justin Washington will be honored in practice on Monday, and will receive Watermelons for breaking the school record in the 4x110m High Hurdle Shuttle Relay. Garret Barch, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Justin Washington will also receive Plaques at the June 5, 2015 Northside Track & Field Banquet at the East Bank Club.

The Sprint Medley Relay Record was held by All Time greats Philip Wdowiak, Steven Kataba, Gabe Jiminez-Ekhman, and Tom Frejowski (1:42.00, 2014 Spartan Relays).

 In the Sprint Medley Relay (100m-100m-200m-400m), Northside Sophomore Jacob Cosby ran a 100m split of 12.19, and made a good exchange to Jay Borgwardt. Northside Sophomore Jay Borgwardt ran an impressive 100m split of 12.18, and made a perfect exchange to Justin Washington. Northside Junior Justin Washington ran an impressive 200m split of 23.29, and made a nice exchange to Keith Jones. Northside Junior Keith Jones anchored Northside to first place in their heat, and in sixth place overall with an impressive 400m split of 53.64 to BREAK THE SCHOOL RECORD with an official time of 1:41.30. Jacob Cosby, Josh Borgwardt, Justin Washington, and Keith Jones were awarded RIBBONS for finishing in sixth place overall. Jacob Cosby, Josh Borgwardt, Justin Washington, and Keith Jones will be honored in practice on Monday, and awarded Watermelons for breaking the school record in the Sprint Medley Relay. Jacob Cosby, Josh Borgwardt, Justin Washington, and Keith Jones will also be awarded Plaques at the June 5, 2015 Northside Track & Field Banquet at the East Bank Club.

The Low Hurdle Shuttle Relay record was held by All Time Greats Lucien Fitzpatrick, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Garret Barch with a 61.70 (2014 Spartan Relays).

 In the 4x110m Low Hurdle Shuttle Relay, Northside Junior Garret Barch hurdled a 14.19 110m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Senior Porter Abbey hurdled a 15.83 110m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Senior Matt Osborne hurdled a 16.06 110m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Junior Justin Washington hurdled a 14.37 110m split to anchor Northside to fifth place overall, and a NEW SCHOOL RECORD with an official time of 60.80. Garret Barch, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Justin Washington were awarded RIBBONS for finishing in fifth place overall. Garret Barch, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Justin Washington will be honored in practice on Monday, and awarded Watermelons for breaking the school record in the 4x100m Low Hurdle Shuttle Relay! Garret Barch, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Justin Washington will also be awarded Plaques at the June 5, 2015 Northside Track & Field Banquet at the East Bank Club.
