News and Announcements

 On Saturday, April 16, 2016, the Northside Varsity Men and Sophomore Boys Track & Field Team traveled to Geneva, Illinois for the 25th Annual Mike Van Deveer Invitational. Mike VanDeveer was the Head Track & Field Coach at Geneva High School for 34 years, from the 1970's through his retirement from education in 2005. The track meet is named in his honor and in recognition for his love of coaching high school athletes in the great sport of Track and Field.  

 The meet featured 7 Teams, including: Burlington Central, Dundee Crown, Northside College Prep, West Chicago, Larkin, St. Charles North, and host Geneva High School.

 Geneva High School was excellent hosts, and provided an outstanding Track and Field experience for the athletes, coaches, and spectators.

 The Chicago Northside Coaching staff also contributed to the meet by officiating Long Jump (Coach Jon Gordon), High Jump (Coach Erasmo De La Cruz), and the Exchange Zones (Coach Mathew Madera). 

 Individual events and relays were scored on the following points scale: 10-8-6-4-2-1.

 In the Varsity Long Jump, Northside Senior Steven Kataba jumped a personal best 17'9. Northside Senior Garret Barch jumped an official distance of 17'1.

 In the Varsity Triple Jump, Northwside Senior Garret Barch jumped an outstanding 36'5. Northside Junior Jack Nolan jumped an official distance of 32'3.50.

 In the Varsity 100m Dash Prelims, Northside Senior Steven Kataba QUALIFIED for the FINALS with an outstanding time of 11.98.

 In the Varsity 110m Hurdles Prelims, Northside Senior Garret Barch QUALIFIED for the FINALS with an outstanding time of 15.47. Northside Junior Jay Borgwardt QUALIFIED for the FINALS with a personal best time of 18.41.

 In the Sophomore 3200m run, Northside Sophomore Kyle Lowenthal DROPPED 22 SECONDS (12:11.90) to finish in ninth place with a PERSONAL BEST time of 11:49.73. Kyle Lowenthal ran the first mile in 5:50, and then ran the final mile in 5:59 for an outstanding time of 11:49.73. Northside Freshman Kristopher Ushijima DROPPED 11 SECONDS (12:03.84) to finish in tenth place with a PERSONAL BEST time of 11:52.04. Kristopher Ushijima ran the first mile in 5:45, and then ran the final mile in 6:07 for an outstanding time of 11:52.04.

 In the Varsity 200m Dash Prelims, Northside Senior Steven Kataba QUALIFIED for the FINALS with a PERSONAL BEST time of 23.79.

 In the Sophomore 200m Dash Prelims, Northside Sophomore Nicholas Brown QUALIFIED for the FINALS with an outstanding time of 24.75.

 In the Varsity 4x100m Relay. Northside was disqualified for making the final exchange before the beginning of the exchange zone (yellow triangle).

 In the Sophomore 4x100m Relay, Northside finished in fourth place with an official time of 49.45. Northside Sophomore Nicholas Brown ran the first leg of the relay with an outstanding 100m split of 12.08, and made a nice exchange to Carel Jones. Northside Sophomore Carel Jones ran the second leg of the relay with an impressive 100m split of 11.54, and made a good exchange to Mason Sotomayor. Northside Sophomore Mason Sotomayor ran the third leg of the relay with an outstanding 100m split of 12.88, and made a perfect exchange to Norberto Nieves. Northside Freshman Norberto Nieves anchored the Mustangs past Geneva (49.62) with an outstanding 100m split of 12.78 to finish in FOURTH place with an official time of 49.45. Nicholas Brown, Carel Jones, Mason Sotomayor, and Norberto Nieves were awarded RIBBONS for finishing in fourth place overall.

 In the Varsity 3200m run, Northside Senior Danny Rosen ran the first mile in 4:53, and then ran the final mile in an EVEN split of 4:53 to WIN it with an outstanding time of 9:46.13. Danny Rosen was awarded a MEDAL for winning the 3200m run. Northside Junior Jack Webster ran the first mile in 5:53, and then ran the final mile in 6:21 for an official time of 12:14.50.

 In the Varsity 110m Hurdles Finals, Northside Senior Garret Barch WON it with an outstanding time of 15.43. Garret Barch was awarded a MEDAL for winning the 110m Hurdles! Northside Junior Jay Borgwardt finished in fifth place with an outstanding time of 18.43. Borgwardt was awarded a RIBBON for finishing in fifth place overall.

 In the Varsity 100m Dash Finals, Northside Senior Steven Kataba finished in eighth place with an official time of 12.09.

 In the Varsity 800m run, Northside Junior Sergio Soto finished in eighth place with an official time of 2:14.80.

 In the Sophomore 800m run, Northside Sophomore phenom Jacob Yosowitz ran the first 400m in 63 seconds, and was in third place, and then in the final 300m he passed two runners with a tremendous kick to WIN it with a personal best time of 2:11.11. Jacob Yosowitz dropped four seconds (2:15) off his best time. Jacob Yosowitz was awarded a MEDAL for winning the 800m run. Northside Freshman Norberto Nieves finished in 11th place with an outstanding time of 2:27.94.

 In the Sophomore 400m, Northside Sophomore Jacob Yosowitz returned to the starting line after winning the 800m run for the 400m Dash. Jacob Yosowitz won his heat of the 400m, and finished in fourth place overall with an PERSONAL BEST time of 57.33. Jacob Yosowitz was awarded a RIBBON for finishing in fourth place overall. Jacob Yosowitz scored 14 points for the Chicago Northside Sophomore Team!! Northside Sophomore Mason Sotomayor was in 8th place in his heat of the 400m, and finished in 12th place overall with an official time of 64.27. Mason Sotomayor is having an outstanding season for the Chicago Northside Mustangs, and has competed in 100m, 200m, 400m, and Sprint Relays.

 In the Varsity 300m Hurdles, Northside Senior Garret Barch tied the School Record (Lucien Fitzpatrick, 41.97, 2013) by finishing in second place with a PERSONAL BEST time of 41.97. Garret Barch was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in second place overall. Northside Junior Jay Borgwardt hurdled an outstanding time of 51.11.

 Northside Junior Alex Ortiz came into the meet, ranked with the 16th fastest 1600m time in the history of Northside. Next, on the all time list was Alumni legend Simon Kafka (15th, 4:45.55). Kafka anchored Northside to a School Record in the 4x800m Relay at the 2013 IHSA State Track & Field Championships, among other honors. Simon Kafka is currently competing at the collegiate level.

  In the Varsity 1600m run, St. Charles North Senior Michael Boone won it with an official time of 4:40.08. West Chicago Junior Dany McComb finished in second place with an official time of 4:40.11. Geneva Junior Jordan Evans finished in third place with an official time of 4:43.17. Dundee-Crown Senior Logan Hayes finished in fourth place with an official time of 4:43.42. Dundee-Crown Sophomore Anthony Hurgoi finished in fifth place with an official time of 4:43.85.

 Northside Junior Alex Ortiz ran an awesome race, and cruised through the first 800m in 2:23, and then ran the final 800m in a NEGATIVE split of 2:22 to finish in sixth place to complete the scoring with a PERSONAL BEST time of 4:45.09. Alex Ortiz dropped 17 seconds from the Glenbrook North Spartan Classic (4/13, 5:02). Alex Ortiz also passed Alumni legend Simon Kafka for the 15th fastest 1600m time in Northside history!

 The BENCH MARK for elite High School milers is the FIVE MINUTE BARRIER.

 Northside Junior Brian McManus dropped 11 seconds (5:02) to BREAK the FIVE MINUTE BARRIER with a PERSONAL BEST time of 4:51.53. Brian McManus also passed Alumni legend Adrian Black (4:52.58) for the 20th fastest 1600m time in Northside history! Brian McManus ran the first 800m in 2:25, and then ran the final 800m in 2:26 to finish in seventh place with an outstanding time of 4:51.53.

 Brian McManus will be honored in practice on Monday for breaking the five minutes barrier!!

On Wednesday, April 13, 2016, Northside Varsity Men's Track & Field Team traveled to Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois for the Spartan Classic.

 The meet featured Deerfield High School, Northside College Prep, and host Glenbrook North.

 It was a very friendly atmosphere as several reunions took place throughout the meet. Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon attended Glenbrook North from 1986-1990, and is a member of their athletic college wall of fame.

 The meet was completed very efficiently, and had non-stop action on the Track, which put the crowd on their feet at all times, and created a fun atmosphere for all participating Teams. The sound system at William Lutz Stadium was also fantastic.

 A special thanks to Glenbrook North Head Coach Scott Lasky, and Assistant Coaches Gross, and Vincent for hosting an outstanding meet.

 Individual Events were scored on the following point scale: 5-3-2-1.

 Relays were scored on the following point scale: 5-3.

 In the Shot Put, Northside Junior Jacob Cosby finished in third place with a throw of 41'1. Northside Junior Matthew Kosova had an outstanding throw of 30'7. Northside Junior Carlos Saldana throw went an official distance of 24'8.5. Northside Junior Vladimir Andrade throw went an official distance of 21'8.

 In the Discus, Northside Sophomore Matthew Gardner threw an outstanding 83'06. Northside Senior Philip Wdowiak thrrew an outstanding 77'10. Northside Junior Christian Guerrero threw an official dance of 77'01. Northside Junior Matthew Kosova had throw of 64'05. Northside Sophomore Brendan Orta had a personal best throw of 61'00.

 In the Pole Vault, Northside Senior Brendan Powers had an outstanding vault of 8'6.

 In the Long Jump, Northside Senior Steven Kataba had a jump of 17'0.5. Northside Senior Garrert Barch jumped an outstanding 16'6. Northside Senior Keith Jones jumped 16'4.25. Northside Junior Josh Borgwardt jumped 15'8. Northside Junior Brian McManus jumped 15'7.5. Northside Junior Jacob Cosby jumped 15'7. Northside Sophomore Elias Decker jumped 15'4. Northside Junior Brandon Banas jumped 14'4. Northside Junior Jack Nolan jumped 13'7.25.

 In the Triple Jump, Northside Junior Brandon Banas jumped 32'11.75. Northside Junior Jack Nolan jumped 32'7. Northside Sophomore Elias Decker jumped 29'11.
