On Tuesday, May 17, 2016, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon, and Senior Brendan Powers traveled to Whitney Young High School for the IHSA Sectional Pole Vault Competition. There was two surprise vaulters entered in the competition from North Lawndale.

Brendan Powers showed great mental toughness and determination, and WON the Pole Vault Competition to QUALIFY for the IHSA State Track & Field Championships! Powers is the first northside athlete since 2013 to qualify for STATE in Pole Vault.

Northside does not have a Pole Vault Pit, and only has ONE 160 lbs Pole. Powers weighed less than 150 lbs when the season began in January 2016. Brendan Powers increased his body weight to 154 lbs to fit the pole, by putting on more muscle in the weight room. He trained himself this season, and did an incredible job to WIN the IHSA Sectional title!!

Powers will vault in Charleston, Illinois on Friday, March 27, 2016 at the STATE Championships. Northside has started the IHSA Sectional Championship meet with 10 points, thanks to the tremendous efforts of Senior Brendan Powers.

The remaining events in the IHSA North Lawndale Sectional will take place at Hanson Stadium on Wednesday, May 18, 2016.
