On Monday, May 12, 2008, and Tuesday, May 13, 2008, Northside Alumni Distance legend John Krumsee visited the Mustangs as they prepare for the upcoming IHSA Sectional Championships. John Krumsee holds the Mustangs 3 Mile school record (15:14), and 2 Mile school record, and recently finished his collegiate career at NCAA Division I Creighton as the Jays' first ever all-conference cross country runner with a personal best 8k time of 24:52. John Krumsee also recently graduated from college and is currently preparing for an upcoming half-marathon race in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The combination of Krumsee's visit, and an outstanding week of training is a good oman for the Mustangs going into the IHSA Sectional Championships on Friday. The last time John Krumsee visited the Mustangs during an IHSA Sectional Championship week (2006), Joseph Terdik dropped 14 seconds off his Mile PR to break the school record with a 4:37 mile.

The site of the 2008 IHSA Sectional Championships is Deerfield High School in Deerfield, Illinois. The Mustangs are very familiar with Deerfield High School. The Mustangs had their best meet of the season at Deerfield in a dual meet on April 21, 2008, and set several school records and PRs, at Adams Stadium.

On Wednesday, May 14, 2008, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon, Assistant Coach Jose Nebrida, and Assistant Coach Chad Ware traveled to Deerfield, Illinois for the IHSA Sectional Seed meeting with the coaching staffs of CICS-Northtown, Senn, Notre Dame, Maine East, Glenbrook North, Northside, Niles West, Loyola Academy, Glenbrook South, Chicago Mather, Highland Park, Niles North, Evanston, New Trier, and Maine South.

Deerfield High School was excellent hosts and provided all of the coaches with Lou Malnati's pizza, pasta, salad, Diet Pepsi, and bottled water.

5'8 was voted on as the starting height for the high jump. An even number was chosen, so that there will be a natural progression to the automatic qualifying height of 6'4 for the State Championships. With Northside Junior Eric Nelson, New Trier Senior Jeremy Wynn, and Glenbrook South Senior Ryan Hindes all in the same sectional, there will definitely be three or more State qualifiers in the High Jump on Friday. The above athletes have all jumped against each other this season at Indoor State, New Trier Classic, and Spartan Relays, and it is a priviledge for every spectator, athlete, and fan to see them compete against each other at IHSA Sectionals.

In the 4x800m Relay, the Mustangs are in heat one, and have the fastest seed time in heat one (8:48). Chicago Northtown, Maine East, Glenbrook North, and Niles West are also in heat one. Heat two features, among others, Evanston, Highland Park, Deerfield, and Mather. Mather's  4x800m relay, includes Ivan Coronel and Jeremy Webber, in a strong effort to qualify for the State Championships.

In the 3200m run, Northside Junior Jonathan Kittaka and Northside Sophomore Cuitlahuac Pineda Youniss both have the fastest seed times in heat one, with a 10:25.

In the 100m Dash, after running some amazing 4x100m Relay, and 4x200m Relay splits the last month, Northside Junior Wemi Jemine could potentially break the Mustangs's school record and qualify for the State Championships.

In the 800m run, Northside Junior Simon Vecchioni and Northside Sophomore Cooper Eben are in heat one, and will challenge Glenbrook North Sophomore Austin Weber (2:09.24) to win the first heat.

In the 400m run, Northside Senior Preston Buehrer is ranked as the fastest runner in heat one. Northside Junior Brandon Cooper is ranked as the fastest runner in heat two.

In the 300m Hurdles, Northside Freshman Hersh Perlmutter is ranked as the fastest hurdler in heat one. Northside Senior Santino Merino is ranked as the second fastest hurdler in heat one.

In the 1600m run, NO athlete entered in the Deerfield IHSA Sectional has hit the automatic qualifying time of 4:23.50 this season. It will truely be a race for the top two spots in the Sectional to qualify for the State Championships. Northside Freshman Charlie Mesimore, Mather Junior Eddie Torres, and  Glenbrook South Junior Jeff Takaki (4:47.64), are ranked as the fastest milers in heat one. Northside Freshman Wesley Laytham, New Trier Freshman Thomas King, and Glenbrook South Senior Billy Cowhey (4:36.64) are ranked as the fastest milers in heat two.

The Mustangs have a special 4x400m Relay for the IHSA Sectional Championship, that includes Hunter Speese, Cuitlahuac Pineda Youniss, Brandon Cooper, and Eric Nelson.

Prior to friday night, no individual or Team at Northside College Prep has ever won an IHSA Sectional Championship in any sport. On Friday, May 9, 2008, Chicago Northside Junior Maria Torres was hoping to qualify for the State Championships by finishing among the top 2 finishers in the Triple Jump at the IHSA York High School Sectional. The competition was outstanding, and going into Maria Torres final jump, she was in fourth place. As Maria Torres approached the runway for her final Triple Jump, the Northside College Prep Varsity Women Track Team lined up against the fence, pulling for Torres to finish in second on her final Triple Jump and qualify for the State Championships.

Northside Captain Maria Torres triple jumped a dramatic 34'11 on her final jump to WIN the 2008 IHSA Sectional Championships, and the entire Northside Track Team and coaching staff erupted in celebration. It was Maria Torres best Triple Jump of the season! Maine South Freshman Veronica Sklarzewski also qualified for State by finishing in second place with an outstanding Triple Jump of 34'3.

IHSA State Championship Triple Jump prelims will take place on Friday, May 16, 2008 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. The Finals will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2008. Northside Assistant Coach David Diaz will travel with Maria Torres to the IHSA State Championships on Thursday evening, and the rest of the Northside coaching staff will arrive for the Finals on Saturday, May 17, 2008.

Maria Torres was awarded an IHSA Sectional Triple Jump Champion Medal for winning the 2008 IHSA Sectional Championships!

Prior to the meet, no athlete in the sectional ran faster than a 2:23 this season (Leyden Sophomore Marta Korpacz), and the second fastest seed time in the sectional belonged to Northside Junior Anna Parks with a 2:27.47. Mather Senior Monica Rodriguez led the field through 400 meters. Northside Junior Anna Parks ran the first 400 meters of the race in 68 seconds. With 300 meters to go, it became a battle between Northside's Anna Parks, Mather's Monica Rodriguez, Leyden's Marta Korpacz, and Maine East's Megan O'Grady.

With 200m to go, Northside's Anna Parks, Maine East's Megan O'Grady, and Leyden's Marta Korpacz were running toe to toe towards the finish.

Leyden Sophomore Marta Korpacz dropped 3 seconds off her best time to win the IHSA Sectional with an outstanding time of 2:20.00. Maine East Senior Megan O'Grady dropped 7 seconds off her best time to place second overall and qualify for the State Championships with a personal best time of 2:20.40. 2008 MENS IHSA STATE SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!

DEERFIELD HIGH SCHOOL

1959 N. Waukegan Road

Deerfield, IL 60015

FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2008

EARLY DISMISSAL 2:45 PM - BUS LEAVES AT 3:00 PM

In January 2008, Coach Gordon sent the entire Team a letter that stated, that unlike other sports, he wouldn’t cut anyone from the roster during the first three days of practice, and that it would be a five months try out to determine our Varsity IHSA Sectional Roster.

As of May 6, 2008, only athletes that are on our IHSA Varsity Sectional roster will be permitted to be at practice. There will be a Cross Country Team meeting on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 3:39 pm. Our Track & Field Banquet will take place on Thursday, May 29, 2008

If you didn’t make the Varsity Sectional Roster, and can answer “Yes” to all of the following questions, then you can honestly say you did everything possible to make the Varsity Team this year. We are looking forward to having you on the Team next year.

Where you on time for every practice? Did you attend every meet? Did you attend meets that you were listed as an alternate for an event? Did you skip practices for vacation? Did you run during the whole warm-up? Did you run during the whole cool down? Did you cut a training run short? Did you go to the weight room after every practice? Did you do your “Core” workouts with the Team? If you can’t answer, “Yes” to all of the above questions, then you definitely need to train more consistently and work harder to make the Varsity squad next year.

All of the meets we competed in this season have just been practice until now. The real SEASON starts TODAY. All of the Teams now have a record of 0-0, and any Team in the State can win the State Title. The experience of competing or even as an alternate during the IHSA State series will be priceless and one that you will remember for the rest of your lives.

On Friday, May 16, 2008, we will travel to Deerfield High School for the IHSA State Sectionals!! The top two athletes in every event and relay qualify for the 2008 IHSA State Championships!! There is automatic qualifying times, distances, and heights as well. However, the purpose of the automatic qualifying standards is to allow for more than two athletes to qualify for the State Championships if the athlete’s performance is worthy of it. You do not have to hit a qualifying standard to go to the State meet. You only have to finish in the Top 2 to qualify for the State Championships!! Also, it is important to remember, that WE are also competing for the TEAM title as well. The top 6 places score in the meet, and individual IHSA Sectional Medals will be awarded as well to the top 6 athletes and/or Relays in each event.

The athletes listed on the following pages have been selected to represent Northside College Prep in the 2008 IHSA State Sectionals on Friday, May 16, 2008 at Deerfield High School. We need EVERYONE listed on the following pages to be at every practice, and come to the meet prepared mentally and physically to race their best.  The athlete with the most CONFIDENCE and a strong belief in his own abilities is the one who will run, jump, or throw their best at the IHSA State Sectionals. Several times, I’ve seen athletes defeat themselves before the gun goes off, because they did not believe in themselves. 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist, Billy Mills said it best, “A winner says I can do it in advance. Follow your dreams.”

Alternates

During the CPS Championship series, several alternates were used in Relays, and in several cases the alternates listed were not at the meet when the TEAM needed them because they wrongly thought they would not compete. The best alternates prepare as if their going to race.  The alternates that have come through for the TEAM in the past, have been the athletes that prepare physically and mentally that their going to race. In the event that you do not get to race, the experience will still be priceless and alternates also get a trip to the State Championship if the relay qualifies.

REMEMBER ONE THING….

WE ARE GOING TO THE IHSA STATE SECTIONALS TO QUALIFY AS MANY ATHLETES AS POSSIBLE FOR THE 2008 IHSA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, BREAK AS MANY SCHOOL RECORDS AS POSSIBLE, AND SCORE AS MANY POINTS AS POSSIBLE.

TO DO THIS, WE MUST HAVE A GREAT TEAM EFFORT WITH TOTAL CONCENTRATION ON RUNNING, JUMPING, AND THROWING AT OUR POTENTTIAL. THE TEAM THAT GOES IN WITH A REAL DESIRE, AN ATTITUDE OF MENTAL TOUGHNESS ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN DO, AN AGGRESSIVE APPROACH TO THE MEET AND A WILLINGNESS TO RUN WITH THEIR ABILITY AND CHALLENGE THEM SELF WILL WIN.
