News and Announcements

 On Friday, February 6, 2009, the Northside Varsity Men, Sophomore Boys, and Freshman Boys traveled to Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois for the Niles West Indoor Classic. The meet featured Niles North, Northside College Prep, Northtown Academy, Austin, Marshall, Lincoln Park, Von Steuben, Gordon Tech, Clemente, Mather, Roosevelt, and host Niles West.

  The Northside Mustangs learned the hard way, that its going to take multiple buses this season to get the entire Mens Track Team, and Pole Vault equipment, to a meet due to the dramatic increase in the size of the Team. The Team also needs more uniforms in larger sizes in order for the Team to be able to compete in comfort this season. 

  Despite those obstacles, and 40% of the Team leaving the meet after the first event because of a mandatory concert for music students, the Northside Mustangs had their best meet ever to start a Track season in the history of the program!!! 

  The Northside Varsity Men started the season with a 8-3 record!!, by finishing in 4th overall with 41.00 points, and posted victories over Marshall (33.50), Lincoln Park (26.5), Clemente (19), Von Steuben (11), Gordon Tech (8), Northtown Academy (0), Austin (0), and Roosevelt (0).

The Northside Sophomore Boys started the season with a 10-1 record!!, by finishing 2nd overall with 94 points, and posted victories over Mather (73), Niles North (67), Gordon Tech (28), Roosevelt (23) Lincoln Park (8), Austin (7), Marshall (7), Von Steuben (6), Northtown Academy (4), and Clemente (0).

The Northside Freshman Boys started the season with a 10-1 record!!, by finishing 2nd overall with 96 points, and posted victories over Niles North (90), Mather (46), Von Steuben (34), Roosevelt (28), Austin (20.5), Clemente (14), Lincoln Park (8), Gordon Tech (7.5), Marshall (0), and Northtown Academy (0).

 Niles West won the Meet on the Varsity, Sophomore, and Freshman levels. The point scale used for Individual events and relays was 10-8-6-4-2-1.

 In the Freshman Shot Put, Northside Freshman Cody Rios threw the shot put a personal best 32'6 to place 1st overall!! Northside Freshman Matt Hernandez threw a personal best 25'1 to place fourth overall! Luis Mesa threw an outstanding 23'1.5. Richard Do threw a personal best 20'8.5. Edgar Ortega threw an outstanding 17'11.

 In the Sophomore Shot Put, Northside Sophomore Damian Azubuike threw the shot put a personal best 33'2 to place fourth overall! Northside Sophomore Neel Patel threw a personal best 28'10. Northside Sophomore Christian Souder threw a personal best 21'9. Northside Sophomore Mohammed Ahmed threw an outstanding 19'11.

 In the Varsity Shot Put, Northside Senior Ted Kalaw threw the shot put a personal best 37'2 to finish in seventh place overall! Northside Senior Rafael Confino threw the shot put a personal best 34'4.5. Senior Brandon Cooper threw the shot put an outstanding 31'4. Junior Steven Burke threw the shot put a personal best 31'3.5. Senior Lawrence Tran threw the shot put a personal best 28'0. Junior Saul Silverya threw the shot put an outstanding 27'0. Senior James Speth threw the shot put a personal best 25'2.5. Junior Sam Olver threw the shot put an outstanding 22'11. Senior Sam Vergara threw the shot put an outstanding 21'2.

 In the Varsity Pole Vault, Northside Sophomore Luke Sobieraj vaulted a personal best 8'0 to place fifth overall.

 In the Freshman Long Jump, Northside Freshman Josh Williams placed 3rd overall with a personal best jump of 14'4.5. Northside Freshman Derek Lin placed 4th overall with a personal best jump of 12'8.75.

 In the Sophomore Long Jump, Northside Sophomore Roldan Alegre placed second overall with a personal best jump of 15'3.50. Northside Sophomore Neel Patel placed fourth overall with a personal best jump of 13'0.50.

 In the Varsity Long Jump, Northside Senior John Konow jumped a personal best 17'4.75 to place fifth overall. Northside Senior Martin Melto jumped a personal best 17'2.75 to place sixth overall. Northside Freshman Mackenzie Melto jumped a personal best 16'4. Northside Sophomore Luke Sobieraj jumped an outstanding 16'1.5. Northside Junior Hunter Speese jumped an outstanding 15'1.25. Northside Senior Norman Lee jumped 10'1.25.

 In the Freshman Triple Jump, Northside Freshman Derek Lin WON it with a personal best jump of 29'9.5!

 In the Sophomore Triple Jump, Northside Sophomore Ed Moreno placed second overall with a personal best jump of 30'1.5!

 In the Varsity Triple Jump, none of Northside College Prep's entries were able to stay and compete due to a mandatory concert for Northside music students, starting at 7 pm.

 In the Freshman High Jump, Northside Freshman Josh Williams WON it with a personal best jump of 4'7! Northside Freshman Dan Graham placed second with a personal best jump of 4'5!

 In the Sophomore High Jump, Northside Sophomore Josh Pfest placed second overall with a personal best jump of 4'9. Northside Sophomore Neel Patel placed fifth overall with a personal best jump of 4'5.

 In the Varsity High Jump, Northside Freshman Mackenzie Melto jumped a personal best 4'11.   

 The Track events started with the 1000m run. The 1000m run, is a rare Track & Field event, that is only run during the Indoor season. In the Freshman division, Northside Freshman Juan Ringor placed third overall with a personal best time of 3:28.

 In the Sophomore 1000m run, Northside Sophomore Fahad Sarvari placed second overall with a personal best time of 3:13. Sarvari dropped 13 seconds from last year!! Northside Sophomore Luis Gaytan placed third overall with a personal best time of 3:20. Northside Sophomore Zach Rosenberg scored vital points for the Mustangs, by placing fourth overall with a personal best time of 3:41.

  In the Varsity 1000m run, Northside Senior Jon Kittaka was edged at the line by two runners (2:56.6, 2:57.0) in a photo finish to place fourth overall with a personal best time of 2:57.4. Northside Sophomore Wesley Laytham finished in sixth place with a personal best time of 2:58.9. Northside Junior Cooper Eben dropped 3 seconds from last year, for a personal best time of 3:00 to finish seventh overall. Northside Senior Norman Lee ran a personal best time of 3:51.8.

 In the Freshman 55m High Hurdles, Northside Freshman Dan Graham hurdled a personal best time of 11.75 to place second overall!

 In the Sophomore 55m High Hurdles, Northside Sophomore Khoa Nguyen ran a personal best time of 10.40 to place fifth overall. Northside Sophomore Neel Patel hurdled a personal best time of 11.00 to place sixth overall. Northside Sophomore Josh Pfest hurdled a personal best time of 12.80.

 In the Varsity 55m High Hurdles, Sophomore Hersh Perlmutter ran a personal best time of 9.70. Junior Andrew Czyszczon ran an outstanding time of 11.30.

 In the Freshman 50m Dash, Northside Freshman Richard Do ran a personal best time of 7.00. Freshman Matt Hernandez ran a personal best time of 7.15. Freshman Luis Mesa ran a personal best time of 7.33. Freshman Derek Lin ran a personal best time of 7.38. Freshman Shariff Khan ran a personal best time of 8.69.

 In the Sophomore 50m Dash, Northside Sophomore Roldan Alegre ran an outstanding time of 6.82. Sophomore Luke Kotowski ran a personal best time of 7.16. Sophomore Jameel Ahmed ran a personal best time of 7.30. Sophomore Muhammad Hossain ran a personal best time of 7.55. Sophomore Jesus Bruno ran a personal best time of 7.59.

 In the Varsity 50m Dash, Northside Junior Steven Burke ran a personal best time of 6.30 to place third overall!! Northside Junior Hunter Speese ran a personal best time of 6.40! Northside Junior Sam Olver ran an outstanding time of 7.25. Northside Senior Sam Vergara ran an outstanding time of 7.41. Northside Junior Nebiu Tadele ran a time of 8.28.

 In the Freshman 800m run, Northside Freshman Jusuf Skelic ran 160m splits of 26, 27, 31, 34, and 31 seconds on the final 160m for a personal best time of 2:29.84 to place third overall!

 In the Sophomore 800m run, Northside Sophomore Rhiday Pandya ran 160m splits of 26, 29, 33, 32, and 31 seconds on the final 160m for a personal best time of 2:31.70 to place fourth overall! Pandya dropped 4 seconds from last year!

 In the Varsity 800m run, Northside Junior Cuitlahuac Pineda Youniss placed third overall with an outstanding time of 2:12. Cuitlahuac Pineda Youniss ran 160m splits of 25, 28, 27, 26 and 26 seconds on the final 160m for an outstanding time of 2:12 to place third overall! Northisde Senior Simon Vecchioni placed sixth overall with a time of 2:23. Simon Vecchioni ran 160m splits of 27, 27, 29, 30, and 30 seconds on the final 160m for an outstanding time of 2:23.

 In the Freshman 4x160m Relay, Northside Freshman Matt Hernandez ran a 22.48 160m split on the first leg of the relay, and made a nice hand-off to Freshman Sharif Khan. Khan ran a 28.32 160m split on the second leg of the relay, and handed off the baton to Freshman Richardo Do. Richard Do ran a 24.05 160m split on the third leg of the relay, and made a nice hand-off to Freshman Luis Mesa. Luis Mesa anchored the relay with a 24.94 160m split, for a total time of 1:39.74 to finish in fifth place overall! 

 In the Sophomore 4x160m Relay, Northside Sophomore Mark Kharouta ran a 25.85 160m split on the first leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Jesus Bruno. Bruno ran a 24.95 160m split on the second leg of the relay, and made a nice hand-off to Sophomore Nico Salzetta. Nico Salzetta ran a 23.80 160m split on the third leg of the relay, and made a nice hand-off to Sophomore Khoa Nguyen. Khoa Nguyen anchored the relay with a 24.67 160m split, for a total time of 1:39.27 to finish in sixth place overall! 

 In the Varsity 4x160m Relay, Northside Senior Brandon Cooper ran a 21.29 160m split on the first leg of the relay, and made a perfect handoff to Junior Steven Burke. Steven Burke ran a 20.92 160m split on the second leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Junior John Konow. John Konow ran a 20.65 160m split on the third leg of the relay, and made a nice hand-off to Sophomore Luke Sobieraj. Luke Sobieraj anchored the relay with a 21.44 160m split, for a total time of 1:24.30 to finish in sixth place overall! 

 In the Freshman 600m run, Northside Freshman Dan Graham ran a personal best time of 1:57 to finish in seventh overall. 

 In the Sophomore 600m run, Northside Sophomore Andres Del Gado ran a personal best time of 2:02 to finish in 3rd place overall.

 In the Varsity 600m run, Northside Senior Brian Chhun finished in sixth overall with a time of 1:45. Northside Junior Andrew finished in seventh overall with a time of 1:46. Northside Junior Peter Wilk finished in eighth overall with a time of 1:53. Northside Senior Coleman Gailloreto finished in ninth overall with a time of 1:58.

 In the Freshman 400m run, Northside Freshman Josh Williams ran a personal best time of 66.70 to finish in fifth place overall.

 In the Sophomore 400m run, Northside Sophomore Josh Pfest ran an outstanding time of 64.30 to finish in sixth place overall.

 In the Varsity 400m run, Northside Senior Brandon Cooper ran a time of 62.50 to finish in seventh place.

 In the Freshman 55m Low Hurdles, Northside Freshman Derek Lin ran a personal best time of 11.38 to finish in sixth place.

 In the Sophomore 55m Low Hurdles, Northside Sophomore Ed Moreno ran a personal best time of 9.80 to finish in fourth place overall! Sophomore Muhammad Hossain ran a personal best time of 10.40. Sophomore Khoa Nguyen ran a personal best time of 10.78. Sophomore Mohammed Ahmed ran a personal best time of 11.90.

 In the Varsity 55m Low Hurdles, Northside Sophomore Hersh Perlmutter ran a personal best time of 9.10. Northside Junior Steven Burke ran a personal best time of 9.19. Northside Junior Saul Silveyra ran a personal best time of 10.00. Northside Junior Andrew Czyszczon ran a personal best time of 10.57.

 In the Freshman Mile, Northside Freshman Joseph Smith ran a personal best time of 5:53. Joseph Smith ran 160m splits of 26, 33, 31, 36, 39 for a 2:45 800m split, and then ran 160m splits of 42, 37, 40, 35, and 34 for a 3:08 split on the final 800m, and a personal best mile time of 5:53 to place fifth overall.

 In the Sophomore Mile, Northside Sophomore Erik Zuehlke WON it with a personal best time of 5:38. Northside Sophomore Luis Gaytan finished in third place with an outstanding time of 5:41.

 In the Varsity Mile, the fastest a Northside athlete had ever gone in a Track meet to start a season was 5:04. That changed on Friday night. Northside Sophomore Charlie Mesimore placed third overall with an outstanding time of 4:52! Charlie Mesimore ran even 160m splits of 29, 29, 29, 29, 29 for a 2:25 split for the first 800m, and then ran 160m splits of 30, 30, 30, 29, and 28 for a 2:27 split on the final 800m, and an outstanding time of 4:52! Charlie Mesimore dropped 29 seconds from his first race from last year! Niles West Zasso finished in fourth with an outstanding time of 4:52.3. Niles North's Thomas finished in fifth place with a time of 4:56.5. Lincoln Park's Certa completed the scoring by placing in sixth place with a time of 4:59.50. Northside Senior Simon Vecchioni out kicked a runner to the finish line for an outstanding time of 5:27. Simon Vecchioni ran 160m splits of 30, 30, 32, 34, 34 for a 2:40 split for the first 800m, and then ran 160m splits of 35, 35, 35, 33, 29 for a 2:47 split on the final 800m, and an outstanding mile time of 5:27. Simon Vecchioni dropped 2 seconds from his first race from last year!

 In the Freshman 200m Dash, Northside Freshman Josh Williams ran a personal best time of 28.90 to finish sixth overall! Northside Freshman Sharif Khan ran a personal best time of 37.16.

 In the Sophomore 200m Dash, Northside Sophomore Josh Pfest ran a personal best time of 28.00. Sophomore Ed Moreno ran a personal best time of 28.60. Sophomore Jameel Ahmed ran a personal best time of 29.80. Sophomore Khoa Nguyen ran a personal best time of 31.47. Sophomore Mohammed Ahmed ran a personal best time of 32.45.

 In the Varsity 200m Dash, Northside Junior Hunter Speese ran an outstanding time of 25.80. Northside Junior Luke Sobieraj ran an outstanding time of 26.40. Northside Junior Peter Wilk ran a time of 29.20. Northside Sophomore Hersh Perlmutter ran a time of 29.74.

 In the Freshman 4x160 Weightmens Relay, Northside Freshman Luis Mesa ran a 23.19 160m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Richard Do ran a 23.88 160m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Edgar Ortega ran a 26.15 160m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Cody Rios anchored the Mustangs to second place overall with a 24.11 160m split, for a total time of 1:37.33.

 In the Sophomore 4x160 Weightmens Relay, Neel Patel was unable to compete, and the Mustangs had no alternates due to throwers having to leave prior to the Sophomore Shot Put taking place, due to the mandatory concert for music students at Northside. As a result, the Northside Sophomores were not able to score any points in the Weightmens Relay.

 In the Varsity 4x160 Weightmens Relay, Northside Senior Sam Vergara ran a 160m split of 23.04 on the first leg of the relay. Junior Sam Olver ran a 160m split of 23.94 on the second leg of the relay. Senior Rafael Confino ran a 160m split of 23.56 on the third leg of the relay. Junior Saul Silveyra anchored the Mustangs to first place in their heat, and third place overall with a 22.57 160m split, for a total time of 1:33.11.

  In the Freshman 4x400m Relay, it was one for the ages, Northside Freshman Matt Hernandez ran a 67.21 on the first leg of the relay, and made a perfect exchange to Dan Graham. Freshman Dan Graham experienced a sprinter's nightmare, a never ending 400m. Graham went through 400m, and the meet official would not let him make the exchange. The Mustangs anchor, Jusuf Skelic, saw that Graham was in trouble after running 400m+, and tried to make the exchange on the opposite side of the Track, and Graham was again denied by the race official. After Dan Graham ran 600m+, the exchange zone officials realized they messed up, and allowed him to make an exchange to Northside Freshman Joseph Smith. Northside Freshman Joseph Smith than ran 74 seconds at an unknown distance before he was allowed to make an exchange, to Northside Freshman Jusuf Skelic. Skelic ran 41 seconds before the race was stopped, and the results from the Freshman 4x400m Relay were not scored. It was the first meet of the year, and sometimes race officials need a meet before their ready to officiate with perfection.

  In the Varsity 4x400m Relay, Northside Senior Brandon Cooper ran a 59.67 400m split on the first leg of the Relay. Northside Senior Brian Chhun ran a 64.69 400m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Senior Simon Vecchioni ran a 61.74 400m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Charlie Mesimore anchored the Mustangs to fourth place overall, with a 60.26 400m split, for a total time of 4:06.

 On Thursday, February 5, 2009, the Northside Sophomore-Freshman Girls Team traveled to Winnetka, Illinois for the New Trier Sophomore-Freshman Girls Track & Field Extravaganza. New Trier Girls Head Coach Bob Spagnoli, hosts the ultimate Sophomore-Freshman Indoor Track meets in Illinois, which feature unlimited entries, and a friendly atmosphere for all participants. Each Team is also provided their own "cardio cage" for warm-up and Team meetings, complete with plasma televisions, which are strategically placed alongside New Trier's Indoor Track. Individual events were scored 5-3-2-1, and Relays were scored 5-3. Northside did not enter any distance runners in the Sophomore-Freshman meet. 

The New Trier Sophomore-Freshman Girls Track Team is one of the largest in Illinois, with over 100 athletes, and it is rare for a small Team to come to Winnetka and overcome their numbers advantage in an unlimited entry meet. However, the Northside Sophomore-Freshman Girls found a way to do it.

Northside College Prep jumped to a surprising 17-8 lead over New Trier at the conclusion of the Field Events, before the Track events even started.

In the Shot Put, Northside Sophomores Caeleigh Renkosiak (25'11) and Katie Dugan (22'9) secured vital points for the Mustangs, by placing first and second overall!! Niles North Sophomore Shabrea White finished in third with an outstanding throw of 20'4. Northside Sophomore Tiffany Tran also threw a personal best 15'2.5 to place fourth overall for the Mustangs!

In the Long Jump, New Trier Sophomore Schectman won it with a jump of 13'9. Northside Freshman Anatasia Rhodes placed third overall with a jump of 13'0! Northside Sophomore Lindsey Shallberg jumped a personal best 11'5!

In the Triple Jump, Northside Freshman Anatasia Rhodes placed second overall with a personal best jump of 23'6!!

In the High Jump, Northside Sophomore Robin Doherty placed second overall with a personal best jump of 4'2! Northside Freshman Anatasia Rhodes placed fifth overall with a personal best jump of 3'10!

In the 4x800m Relay, New Trier won it with a 11:22.83.

In the 400m Dash, Northside Sophomore Ashley Kossawkoski placed fourth overall with a personal best time of 80.00. Northside Freshman Gennesis Meza ran a personal best time of 91.10.

In the 4x145.45 meters Relay, Northside Freshman Hannah Lea Dorvelo, Rosailie Abbey, Vivian Lei, and Sophomore Stella Han combined for an outstanding time of 1:42.18 to place third overall.

In the 50 Yard Low Hurdles, New Trier Sophomore Hafter won it with an outstanding time of 8.94. Northside Sophomore Robin Doherty finished in third with a personal best time of 9.18.

In the 50 Yard Dash, Northside Sophomore Robin Doherty ran a personal best time of 7.47. Northside Freshman Vivian Lei ran a personal best time of 7.78. Northside Sophomore Stella Han ran a personal best time of 7.87. Northside Freshman Hannah Lea Dorvelo ran a personal best time of 7.88. Northside Freshman Rosailie Abbey ran a personal best time of 8.19.

In the 800m Run, Niles North Sophomore Williamson won it with a time of 2:50.65.

In the 200m Dash, Northside Sophomore Ashely Kossakowski ran a personal best time of 34.37. Northside Freshman Rosailie Abbey ran a personal best time of 35.34. Northside Sophomore Stella Han ran a personal best time of 36.24. Northside Freshman Vivian Lei ran a personal best time of 36.41.

In the 1600m Run, Niles North Sophomore Williamson won it with a time of 6:22.

In the 4x400m Relay, Northside Sophomore Ashley Kossakowski, Lindsey Shallberg, Robin Doherty, and Freshman Hannah Lea Dorvelo combined for a 5:35.80 to place third overall.

A special thanks to Northside Coach David Diaz for purchasing pizza for the entire Team at the conclusion of the meet, at his own expense.

The Northside Sophomore-Freshman Girls will travel to Evanston High School on February 13, 2009 for the Wildkits Indoor Classic. 

On Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at 7 pm, prior to the Mustangs first meet of the season, Universal Sole will host a pizza party for Northside Athletes and parents. Universal Sole is located at 3052 N. Lincoln in Chicago, Illinois 60657 and specializes in Track & Field shoes. Universal Sole was recently purchased by former Indiana University Track Star, Joel Feinberg, who was also a  High School teammate of Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon at Glenbrook North High School in 1989-1990. Universal Sole will provide a discount to Northside athletes, and are highly recommended.
