On Friday, March 6, 2009, the Northside College Prep Varsity Mens Track & Field Team traveled to Henry Crown Stadium at the University of Chicago, to take on Mather, Wheaton Academy, University High, F.W. Parker, North Shore Country Day, Jones College Prep, and St. Ignatius in the University High Track & Field Extravaganza.

Henry Crown Stadium features an athlete friendly atmosphere, upper deck seating, 200m Indoor Track and has been the host to numerous National meets, and local Championship meets as well. The Varsity letter was invented in the 1890s by Amos Alonzo Stagg as he was sitting on the entrance steps to Henry Crown Field house. The main wall of the stadium constains a list of field house records, which include several Olympians. The first Heisman Trophy winner (1935), Hay Berwanger is still listed on the all-time list for Henry Crown for the 55m Dash. Henry Crown Field house is a Chicago landmark that is rich in Track & Field history.

A special thanks to University High Head Coach Bud James for hosting an outstanding meet, and for providing a great Track & Field experience for all of the athletes and spectators.

Individual events and relays were scored on the following point scale: 10-8-6-4-2-1.

The meet featured Roosevelt, Foreman, Driscoll, Waukegan, Maine West, Loyola, Northside College Prep, and an undefeated Niles West Team.

In the Freshman division, Niles West won the meet. Northside College Prep finished in second place with 94 points, and posted victories over Loyola Academy (88.50 points), Maine West (50.50 points), Roosevelt (20 points), Waukegan (15 Points), Driscoll (0 points), and Foreman (0 points). The Northside College Prep Freshmen Team now have a season record of 16-2!!!

In the Sophomore division, Loyola Academy upset Niles West by one point to win the meet. Waukegan finished in third place. Northside College Prep finished in fourth place with 42 points, and posted victores over Maine West (19 Points), Roosevelt (12 points), Driscoll (0 points), and Foreman (0 points). The Northside College Prep Sophomore Team now has a season record of 14-4!!!

In the Varsity division, several new additions to the Team made a big impact for the Mustangs, and with winter sports ending this week, the Mustangs will be adding 20 athletes to the Varsity roster for the University High Track & Field Extravaganza on Friday, March 6, 2009 in Henry Crown Stadium at the University of Chicago.

At Niles West, the Varsity division quickly became a four team battle, between Loyola, Northside College Prep, Waukegan, and host Niles West.

In the Varsity Pole Vault, Northside Sophomore Luke Sobieraj scored by placing sixth overall with a vault of 7'0.

In the Freshman Shot Put, Northside Freshman Cody Rios WON it with a personal best throw of 33'8.5!!! Maine West's Franchi threw 31'5.5. Niles West's Lee threw 29'8. Niles West Abams threw 29'2.5. Roosevelt's Marin threw 25'9.5. Niles West's Sullivan threw 24'5.5 to complete the scoring. Northside Freshman Matt Hernandez threw an outstanding 22'9. Northside Freshman Luis Mesa threw an outstanding 21'10.5. Northside Freshman Richard Do threw 19'7.

In the Sophomore Shot Put, the Mustangs were missing Sophomore phenoms Damian Azubuike and Luke Kotowski. Northside Sophomore Mohammed Ahmed threw 19'3.

In the Varsity Shot Put, Northside Senior Eric Nelson threw a season best 39'7 to place sixth overall and secure vital points for the Mustangs. Northside Senior Ted Kalaw threw an outstanding 35'7. Northside Senior Lawrence Tran threw a personal best 28'4.

In the Freshman Long Jump, Maine West's Polouchak won it with a jump of 15'8.75. Northside Freshman Jusuf Skelic finished in second place with a personal best jump of 15'4.75!!! Skelic's jump would have also placed fifth in the Varsity. Loyola's Williams finished in third place with a jump of 14'7.25. Northside Freshman Josh Williams placed fourth overall with a personal best jump of 14'5.5!!! Northside Freshman Mac Melto jumped an outstanding 14'5 to place fifth overall. Maine West's Lamber completed the scoring with a jump of 14'1.5 to place sixth overall. Northside Freshman Derek Lin jumped an outstanding 13'8.25.

In the Sophomore Long Jump, the Mustangs were missing all of their Sophomore jumpers and they will be receiving loud wake-up call from Team Captains the rest of the season.

In the Varsity Long Jump, Senior Martin Melto (17'5) was given the day off as a result of a tender foot, and a possible injury. Senior John Konow (17'4.75) slept through his alarm clock, but Konow did arrive in time to help the mustangs in the 4x400m Relay. Junior Arnas Butkus missed the meet. Junior Kevin Jaburek was needed in four other events. As a result, the Mustangs had no entries in the Varsity Long Jump, and the sad thing about it is "15'9.5", "13'11.75", and "13'7.75" all scored on the Varsity level. The Mustangs let a big time scoring opportunity slip away. The absenses cost the Mustangs an entire place in the standings. However, the Mustangs have 15 entries in the Varsity long jump in there very next meet at the University High Track Extravaganza, so it will be a one-time problem. It's better for athletes to learn now the impact that missing a single event has on the Team score, than later in the season.

In the Freshman Triple Jump, Northside Freshman Derek Lin placed second overall with a jump of 26'4.75. Northside Freshman Mac Melto missed his event for an unknown reason.

In the Sophomore Triple Jump, again, the Mustangs were missing all of their Sophomore jumpers and they will be receiving a loud wake-up call from Team Captains the rest of the season.

In the Varsity Triple Jump, Senior Martin Melto (37'1) was given the day off as a precaution, as a result of a tender food, and a possible injury. Senior John Konow slept through his alarm clock, but did arrive in time to rescue the mustangs in the 4x400m relay. Sophomore Luke Sobieraj was needed in four other events. As a results, the Mustangs had only one entry in the Varsity Triple Jump, a hurdler, Senior Nathan Michaelson. Michaelson came through big time, and placed sixth overall with a jump of 25'1.5 to score vital points for the Mustangs and earn a Varsity letter. Nathan Michaelson will have plenty of support in the Mustangs next meet. The Mustangs will have 8 entries in the Varsity Triple Jump at the University High Tack Extravaganza.

In the Freshman High Jump, Northside dominated it with 5 athletes scoring!!! Ties were broken by awarding the higher place to the athlete with the least number of total missed during the competition. Northside Freshman Mac Melto WON it with a personal best jump of 5'0!!! Loyola's Dryaghale finished in second place with a jump of 4'10. Northside Freshman Chris Ceisel finished in third place with a personal best jump of 4'10!!! Niles West's Adrabtas finished in fourth place with a jump of 4'10. Northside Freshman Josh Williams finished in fifth place with a personal best jump of 4'10!!! Northside Freshman Jusuf Skelic, and Northside Freshman Dan Graham tied for sixth place with personal best jumps of 4'8!!!

In the Sophomore High Jump, Loyola's Haber won it with an outstanding jump of 5'6. Niles West's Lee placed second with a jump of 5'2. Northside Sophomore Josh Pfest placed third overall with a personal best jump of 4'10!!! Loyola's Laskowski finished in fourth place with a jump of 4'8.

At Niles West, Northside Junior Cooper Eben became the fifth, by BREAKING THE FIVE MINUTE BARRIER with a personal best time of 4:53!!! Initially Northside and Loyola were "DQ" for losing control of the baton as they crossed the finish line.
