KING OF THE SHOT PUT: CODY RIOS

Posted by Jon Gordon at Jan 21, 2010 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

On Friday, January 22, 2010, an army of athletes filled the main entrance of Northside College Prep, the northside cafeteria, and hallways, waiting for departure to North Park University for the 5th Annual King of the Shot Put. A special thanks to North Park University Head Track Coach Skip Stolley and staff, for hosting this great event.

Every member of the Northside Track & Field Team, regardless if they were a distance runner, thrower, sprinter, jumper, or hurdler, would particpate in three of 420 throws, in the World's largest Shot Put competion. Although the event was just a trial, the crowd was so large at Alford Indoor Track at North Park University, that spectators had to stand in the balcony of the stadium to see the Shot Put circle.

A year ago, Cody Rios finished in second place overall in King of the Shot Put. This year, Sophomore Cody Rios threw the shot put 30'10 to win the 2010 King of the Shot Put competition.

Freshman King of the Shot Put: Alex Park

Sophomore King of the Shot Put: Cody Rios

Junior King of the Shot Put: Allen Tu

Senior King of the Shot Put: Andrew Czyszczon

On Friday, January 15, 2010, after an incredible homecoming Pep Rally, the Northside Cafeteria was filled to capacity, with standing room only for the Northside Track & Field Registration Meeting.

Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon introduced Assistant Coaches Joseph Hetland, Jessica Upchurch, Adrian Hunter, Chuck Milbert, Ryan Hopper, and Jose Nebrida to the Team.

Although Northside College Prep only has 1,000 students, and has never had a Track Team bigger than 100 athletes, that all changed on Friday, January 15, 2010.

Over 150 athletes registered to join the 2010 Northside Track & Field Team!!! The Mustangs will have plenty of help this year to put the first IHSA Sectional Championship banner in school history on the Gym wall, on their way to the State Championships!!!

A special thanks to Team Captains Cuitlahuac Pineda Youniss, Cooper Eben, Charlie Mesimore, Wesley Laytham, Hersh Perlmutter, Bessie Nolan, Robin Doherty, Anastasia Rhodes, Caeleigh Renkosiak, and Nina Coomes for their outstanding recruiting efforts this season.

Northside Track & Field Team Captains were honored after the Registration Meeting at a special Team Captains Dinner at La Brasa Roja Restaurant. At the Team Captains Dinner, the coaching staff disclosed exciting plans for the upcoming season, including a new travel schedule.

The Mustangs will be taking four buses to Track meets in 2010, and with over 15% of the student body joining the Team, Northside will need huge fund raising efforts to purchase additional uniforms to accomodate a Team that will reach over 200 athletes in February 2010 as Wrestling, Basketball, and Swimming reach the conclusion of their respective seasons. Sponsors for uniforms are also being actively sought by Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon. If you can help, please contact a member of the coaching staff. Thanks.

Friendly reminder, Northside wants everyone to be able to participate in our first practice. To make this happen, ALL athletes must turn in the following by Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at 3:45 pm: (1) Athletic Profile Form, (2) NEW Track & Field Players Record Card, (3) a copy of your Physical, (4) signed code of conduct form, and (5) an IHSA Steroid Testing Consent form.

Pole Vault practice will commence with Coach Ryan Hopper on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 6:15 am, and all other event groups will begin practices on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 3:45 pm.

Distance runners please be prepared to train outside, by bringing your hat and gloves with you to practice. Thanks.
