Since his Freshman year of high school, Wesley Laytham has had the goal of qualifying for the IHSA State Championships, and on Thursday, May 20, 2010, in Wilmette, Illinois, at the IHSA Loyola Sectional, it became reality when he ran a 1:57.65 800m run to qualify for the State Championships!!!

On Thursday, May 27, 2010, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon, Assistant Coach Joe Hetland, Assistant Coach Charles Milbert, and Wesley Laytham traveled to Charleston, Illinois in preparation for the IHSA State Championships at Eastern Illinois University. The Mustangs stayed in an "Olympic Village" atmosphere with State Qualifiers from across the State, in Carmen Hall, which was located less than three blocks from the stadium. Carmen Hall was complete with a Big Screen Television, and Pool tables.

On Friday, May 28, 2010, upon arrival to O'Brien Stadium, Wesley Laytham was given a State Qualifier Pin from the IHSA, along with his race number. As the athletes began warm-ups for the 800m run, the stadium was filled close to its capacity, and spectators, fans, and Teams, had to park over a half mile away from the Stadium because of the size of the sell-out crowd. Outside the Stadium, there was a large festival of Track & Field souvenir vendors.

In 2010, Wesley Laytham dropped 9 seconds, and went from a 2:06 800m run personal record to a 1:57.65!

Wesley Laytham has also won the 800m run Title, among other Track events, at the Niles West Wolves Invitational, Fenton Indoor Classic, CPS Indoor Championships, Deerfield Classic, Lake Forest Academy Invitational, and the Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic.

Northside Track Captain Wesley Laytham also holds SIX School Records (800m Run, Sprint Medley Relay, Distance Medley Relay, 4x400m Relay, 4x800m Relay, and 6400m Relay), and has set numerous records in the Weight room. Wesley Laytham is also one of the only athletes in Northside history to score over a 100 points in a season. Wesley Laytham scored a Team leading 125.25 points in 2010!

Northside Junior Wesley Laytham (2:01.58) finished ahead of Barrington Junior Eric Schneider and Warren Senior Xavier Suarez in the IHSA State Prelims on Friday to complete one of the greatest seasons in Northside history. The experience at the State Championships was priceless, and with a PR of 1:57.65, Wesley Laytham is now within 5 seconds of winning the State Title next year!

Lake Park won the 2010 State Title over York, 50-40, against all odds. York had 20 qualifiers in the state meet. Lake Park had THREE athletes (Zack Ziemek, Jermaine Kline, and Jeremy Kiline) score 50 points in the Discus (2nd and 3rd place), Shot Put (1st and 3rd place), Pole Vault (1st place), and Triple Jump (second place) to win the Team Title! Congratulations to Lake Park on winning the 2010 State Title!
