On Saturday, May 28, 2011, in Charleston, Illinois, at the IHSA State Track & Field Championships, the Northside Mustangs had a big day on the strength of Mac Melto's outstanding performance in the 400m run.

Northside posted victories over, among others, Palatine High School, Lane Tech, Libertyville, Highland Park, Naperville North, Bradley, Romeoville, Zion Benton, St. Laurence, and Wheaton North.

In the 400m run, Mac Melto placed seventh overall with an outstanding time of 48.86. In front of a capacity filled stadium, after the 400m run, in a very nice ceremony, Mac Melto was awarded a Medal for placing seventh overall and earning All State Honors. A picture of Mac Melto from the State Meet will be put on permanent display in the Northside College Prep Trophy Case. His shoes will also be autographed and placed underneath the photo.

Mac Melto has been invited to compete in the New Balance National High School Outdoor Track & Field Championships as an "Emerging Elite" in the 400m run. The National Track & Field meet will take place June 16-18, 2011 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Unfortunately, due to IHSA rules, he will not be able to wear his Northside uniform, and will have to race "unattached", and travel on his own to the National Championships.

Mac Melto will return in time from the National Championships for the first Summer Cross Country Practice at Northside College Prep on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 6:30 am. Cross Country Team Captains Mac Melto, Simon Kafka, Ezra Edgerton, and Pat Duffy are all looking forward to the upcoming summer and season.

On Thursday, May 26, 2011, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon, Sprints Coach Kwaku Attoh, Mac Melto, and Wesley Laytham traveled to Charleston, Illinois in preparation for the IHSA State Championships at Eastern Illinois University. The Mustangs stayed in an "Olympic Village" atmosphere with State Qualifiers from across the State, in Lawson Hall, which was located less than two blocks from the stadium. Lawson Hall was complete with a Big Screen Television, Air Hockey Tables, and Pool tables.

On Friday, May 27, 2011, upon arrival to O'Brien Stadium, Mac Melto was given a State Qualifier Pin from the IHSA, along with his race number. As the athletes began warm-ups for the 400m run, the stadium was filled close to its capacity, and spectators, fans, and Teams, had to park over a half mile away from the Stadium because of the size of the sell-out crowd. Outside the Stadium, there was a large festival of Track & Field souvenir vendors.

Twenty-Nine athletes qualified for State Championships in the 400m run, and the field was reduced to nine athletes, after four heats of prelims on Friday.

Mac Melto finished in second place in the third heat of the prelims with an outstanding time of 49.04 to QUALIFY for the State Finals on Saturday!

Mac Melto will race on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 2:55 pm at O'Brien Stadium, in the Finals for the State Championship!

Northside Senior Wesley Laytham will be racing in the 800m, under the lights at O'Brien Stadium this evening in the Open 800m run at the State Championships. If there is enough recovery time, Laytham will also race in the 1600m run.

On Thursday, May 19, 2011, Northside Junior Mac Melto qualified for the State Championships in the 400m run with a school record time of 48.78.

On Friday, May 20, 2011, Mac Melto went back to work at practice to prepare for the State Championships with the help of Northside Senior Wesley Laytham. Melto and Laytham ran 8x100m repeats in 11 seconds!

On Monday, May 23, 2011, Mac Melto and Wesley Laytham ran 300m repeats at 90% in 38-40 seconds!

On Tuesday, May 24, 2011, Mac Melto and Wesley Laytham ran four laps of Ins and outs on the Track.

On Thursday, May 26, 2011, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon, Sprints Coach Kwaku Attoh, Mac Melto, and Wesley Laytham will leave for Charleston, Illinois for the State Championships!

The IHSA announced this morning that the 400m run State prelims will commence at O'Brien Stadium in Charleston, Illinois on Friday, May 27, 2011. Mac Melto will race in the 400m prelims at approximately 3:01 pm. After the Prelims, Wesley Laytham is racing at 7 pm in the open 800m run at the State Meet Open Races Under the Lights at O'Brien Stadium.

On Saturday, May 28, 2011, Mac Melto will race in the 400m Finals at approximately 2:55 pm.

The IHSA is going to broadcast the races live on the internet at IHSA.TV on Friday and Saturday.
