News and Announcements

On Sunday, March 18, 2012, the Northside Varsity Mens All Star Track & Field Team traveled to Henry Crown Field House in Chicago, Illinois for the 2012 Indoor City Championships.

Henry Crown Stadium features an athlete friendly atmosphere, upper deck seating, 200m Indoor Track and has been the host to numerous National meets, and local Championship meets as well. The Varsity letter was invented in the 1890s by Amos Alonzo Stagg as he was sitting on the entrance steps to Henry Crown Field house. The main wall of the stadium contains a list of field house records, which include several Olympians. The Field house record for the 200m Dash, is held by DePaul Blue Demons Head Track & Field Coach Dave Dopek. Henry Crown Field house is a Chicago landmark that is rich in Track & Field history.

A special thanks to CPS Track & Field coordinator Thomas Smith for hosting an outstanding meet, and for providing a great Track & Field experience for all of the athletes and spectators.

Northside came into the Indoor City Championships with a "seed" time of 8:38.0 for the 4x800m Relay. However, All City 800m runner, Pat Duffy was scratched from the relay, after he warmed-up for the event. The Mustangs would need a big day from a relay alternate to compete for the City title. Northside Senior Joseph Smith, Sophomore Robert Szmurlo, and Sophomore Nate Mendez trained all week as relay alternates, and even practiced hand-offs, just in case they were needed for the relay. The extra preparation paid off for the Mustangs.

In the Varsity 4x800m Relay, Northside College Prep WON the indoor title with an outstanding time of 8:38.89. Northside Senior Dan Graham ran the first 400m in 59 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 69 seconds for a 2:08.86 800m split, and fell to the ground as he made the hand-off to Northside Senior Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith dropped four seconds off his personal best time, with an impressive 2:14.36 800m split, and made a nice hand-off to Northside Junior Patrick Brennan. Patrick Brennan passed several teams, and ran an incredible relay leg to put the Mustangs in contention with a 2:10.86 800m split, and Brennan made a perfect exchange to Northside Senior Ezra Edgerton. Ezra Edgerton passed Lincoln Park, and then he passed Whitney Young for the lead, and anchored the Mustangs to VICTORY with a 2:04.18 800m split, for an official time of 8:38.89. It was one of the greatest anchor legs in the history of Northside! Whitney Young finished in second place with a season best time of 8:40.63. Lincoln Park finished in third place with an official time of 8:44.90. Brooks finished in fourth place with a season best time of 8:49.19. Walter Payton finished in fifth place with an official time of 8:54.20. Kenwood finished in sixth place to complete the scoring with an official time of 9:03.83.

In the 55m Hurdles, Northside Sophomore Lucien Fitzpatrick finished in third place with an outstanding time of 8.64.

In the 55m Dash, Northside Senior Mac Melto WON it with an outstanding time of 6.60. Mac Melto also qualified for Illinois Prep Top Times in the 55m dash! It was also the fastest 55m Dash time in the CPS Indoor Championship for groups A, B, and C!

In the 800m run, Northside Senior Dan Graham wasn't recovered enough from the 4x800m relay, and the Mustangs almost pulled him out of the race before it started. Graham ran an official time of 2:25.10. With more rest, Graham came back later in the meet and ran a great split in the Mustangs fastest 4x400m relay of the indoor season!

In the 4x200m Relay, the Northside Freshman had a great day. Northside had an official time of 1:50.09. Northside Sophomore Jay Yu ran a 28.22 200m split on the first leg of the relay, and had a difficult exchange to Freshman Porter Abbey. Ari Perlmutter anchored the Mustangs with a personal best 26.36 200m split for an official time of 1:50.09. With big time drops in their 200m splits, the Northside coaching staff is looking forward to seeing similar time drops in the 400m for the Northside Freshman next meet.

In the 400m run, Northside Senior Mac Melto WON the Indoor title with an official time of 50.30. Mac Melto will compete for the Class 2A Illinois Prep Top Times title on Saturday, in Bloomington, Illinois.  In the Long Jump, Northside Senior Josh Williams finished in THIRD place with a season best jump of 19'10.

In the High Jump, Northside Sophomore Lucien Fitzpatrick finished in FIFTH place with a leap of 5'6.

The Indoor City Championships is the only meet that the 4x400m Relay finishes before the Triple Jump. As a result, Northside scratched Josh Williams from the 4x400m Relay. The alternates ran outstanding. Northside ran their fastest 4x400m Relay of the indoor season.

In the 4x400m Relay, Northside Junior Nathaniel Agharese ran a 56.51 400m split on the first leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Senior Dan Graham. Dan Graham ran a 57.44 400m split on the second leg of the relay, and made a perfect exchange to Senior Ezra Edgerton. Ezra Edgerton ran a 54.56 400m split on the third leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Senior Mac Melto. Mac Melto anchored the Mustangs to third place in their heat, and eighth overall with a 54.41 400m split, for an official time of 3:43.51.

In the Triple Jump, Northside Senior Josh Williams finished in seventh place with an outstanding jump of 38'10.50. Williams also had an incredible jump on his final attempt, that looked well over 40'00, but he hit the foul line on his approach. The best is yet to come.

Spikes is the operative word.
Spikes – Shoes used to compete in track and field events.
Spikes in this context are legal and are to be used.
Spikes – Metal, cleat like objects that are inserted into shoes to acquire better traction.
Spikes in this context are not legal.
Athletes may use the blank studs to insert into the spikes so that a measure of traction is possible.  Athletes may also run in the spikes (shoes) without the spikes (metal 1/8 objects).
.
The following was issued by the CPS Sports Administration:

Absolutely no food allowed in the facility.  Bring water. Food will have to be accessed from a coach or parent's car, outside of the facility.

Metal/plastic spikes in spike shoes are also not permitted.  CPS and U of. C security will be checking for these things so your compliance is appreciated to avoid, limit or otherwise de-escalate confrontations.
