In October 2007, Northside Alumni Miles Austrevich helped the Northside Freshman Cross Country Team win the Chicago Public League City Title by finishing fourth for Northside and 8th overall in the entire City of Chicago. Northside won the Freshman City Title with a score of 27 points.

Two years later, his teammates would win the Varsity City Title, but Miles Austrevich never got to be on that Team because he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Miles Austrevich has been battling brain cancer for over three years, now with a fourth recurrence, he is about to undergo an autologous stem cell transplant at LA Children's Hospital. He will be in isolation, 2,000 miles from family and friends for months. His father is asking folks from around the world to send in 5,000 jokes that he can watch online from his hospital room.

Miles has had days were it was a struggle to make it just from his bed to a wheel chair. The jokes give him energy to keep fighting.

On Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at the Laugh Factory Comedy Club at 3175 N. Broadway, Chicago, Illinois, and at the Laugh Factory Comedy Club at 8001 Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, Califorinia, a 30 hours Joke-a-thon will take place for Miles Austrevich. Anyone, comedian, or not, can record a 30 seconds to a minunte joke for Miles Austrevich at the Laugh Factory Comedy Clubs or online at Jokes4miles.com.

This season, the Northside Track & Field Team received a trophy for finishing in second place in the Chicago Public League Indoor Championships and for winning the Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic. The Northside Track & Field Team is dedicating both trophies to Miles Austrevich for his fight against cancer.

On Friday, April 20, 2012, the Northside Varsity and Sophomore Track & Field Team attempted to travel to Highland Park, Illinois for the 2012 Highland Park Twilight Invitational. Many Northside parents also made the journey to Highland Park, Illinois only to find that the Team wasn't there when they arrived. Several Northside parents took off work, and canceled evening plans to see their children compete at this meet, and it did not happen.

Members of the Northside Track & Field Team were dismissed from classes at 2:15 pm, and Jewel Bus Company never showed up to pick up the Northside Track & Field Team. The bus company was called several times, and each time they said someone would be there in 12 minutes, and no one ever came. This was a horrible experience for the Coaching Staff and Team.
