In the Long Jump, Northside Senior Josh Williams BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD and QUALIFIED for the IHSA State Championships with a personal best jump of 21'7! Josh Williams will be honored on Monday with a Watermelon for breaking the school record! Williams will also receive a patch for qualifying for the IHSA State Championships.

Josh Williams had been jumping in the IHSA Sectional Championships since Freshman year. At the 2009 IHSA Sectionals, Josh Williams jumped a personal best of 16'6.50. He scored only one Varsity point his Freshman year. At the end of every season, his Father, Craig Williams, took his son, Josh, to the State meet in Charleson, Illinois to support Northside athletes and told him every year to keep working hard and that he would be in the State meet someday.

At the 2010 IHSA Sectionals (Sophomore year), Josh Williams jumped an impressive 18'3.25. Williams improved by almost 2'0 from Freshman to Sophomore year. Williams also went from scoring one Varsity point as a Freshman, to scoring 63 points as a Sophomore! At the end of Sophomore year, his father once again took him to Charleston to support a teammate, Northside 800m run State Qualifier, Wesley Laytham, and see the State Meet.  His father told him to keep working hard, and that he would be in the State meet someday. Josh Williams had the vision and the dream. Josh Williams worked hard, and even ran Cross Country in the off-season to strengthen his legs and improve his leg speed. Josh Williams made the sacerfices necessary to be an athlete.

Josh Williams had a monster Junior year. He competed in the 4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay, High Jump, Triple Jump, and Long Jump. He won at least one event and/or relay at every meet. On several occassions, Williams won 2-3 events and/or relays. Josh Williams went from scoring one point as a Freshman to leading the entire Team in Varsity points as a Junior with 167.25 points! He also excelled off the field, becoming an Eagle Scout, and scored a perfect score on his ACT. He broke the Northside school record for Long Jump at the City Championships, and also helped the Northside 4x400m Relay finish second in the City Championships. At the 2011 IHSA Sectionals (Junior year), Josh Williams jumped an impressive 19'6. His Father once again took him to Charleston to see the State meet, and to support a teammate, All State Athlete Mac Melto.

Josh Williams had the vision and the dream. Senior year would be his last opportunity to make it to the State meet. Josh Williams went into Senior year with opportunity to go to State in two sports, Cross Country and Track. He trained hard all summer. He was up at dawn running at 6:30 am with the cross country team, followed by weight training, and then he would train again on his own in the afternoon. Josh Williams even ran eight miles from Chicago to James Park in Evanston in a hail storm. His determination was second to none.

However, the worst part of sports became a reality for Josh Williams. He started to develop pain in his leg, and kept running on it, and it resulted in an injury. The toughest thing for an athlete to go through is an injury. Sometimes those that work the hardest, and make all the sacerfices to be the best, have every thing taken away from them because of a single injury. Josh Williams had to take time off, and make more sacerfices to overcome it, and get his legs strong again. Williams came back in time for the City Cross Country Championships, and worked hard all winter in preparation for his Senior year of Track.

Josh Williams had a BIG Senior year for the Northside Track & Field Team. He scored points for the Mustangs in the 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m, 400m, High Jump, Triple Jump, and Long Jump. He is consistently among the top two points scorers on the TEAM in every meet. He also earned All City Honors in Long Jump with a jump of 20'00.25. However, he was still an underdog, with three jumpers ranked ahead of him going into the IHSA Sectional meet. Going into the 2012 IHSA Sectional Championships, Northside Hall of Fame Jumps Coach Ed Wallace had Josh Williams rest more than anything else. The strategy paid off BIG for Northside.

At the 2012 IHSA Sectional Championships, Josh Williams jumped 21'2 on his first jump to break the Northside school record, and make the IHSA Sectional finals. At the IHSA Sectional Championships, the top 12 jumpers advance to the finals and receive three more jump attempts in the Finals. Marks from the prelims carry over to the Finals. The top two jumpers qualify for the State Championships.

Josh Williams was in third place going into the finals, and needed to pass one more athlete in the standings to live the dream and qualify for the IHSA State Championships. Former Olympian Bob Beamon said he jumped, and he has never come down after breaking the world record and winning his first Gold Medal. In front of his parents, uncle, family members, friends, coaches, and the Northside Track Team, Josh Williams jumped, and everyone who witnessed it will never come down. Josh Williams jumped  21'7 to BREAK THE NORTHSIDE SCHOOL RECORD and QUALIFY for the IHSA State Championships!!! Josh Williams is going to Charleston, Illinois next Thursday with the Northside Track & Field Team to compete in the IHSA State Championships! His father is making his annual trip to Charleston to support Northside athletes at the State meet, and to see his son jump in the State Championships!!

Josh Williams will receive his IHSA State Finals Qualifier patch on Monday before practice, and will receive his IHSA State Qualifier Pin at the State Meet.
